What’s the deal with your sandwich shop,s insanely annoying and illogical : no cash back on gift cards policy. Something your staff likes to repeat over and over, again, never with any explanation. When the balance dwindles down to a couple dollars or a handful of change,the exact same routine ensues, staff member crosses out the old balance, stands there with a calculator and calculates the new balance. No chance to tie up loose ends, I am now left with one more piece of paper to carry around in my purse, worry about, and keep track of. Here’s the thing: gift cards are bought with cash. That means cash back isn’t a loss for your store. I watched incredulously today as your cashier calculated the new balance and handed ithe certificate back to me.: new balance: 00.16 cents. When it reaches that point, give your gift card to a bum. You no longer have to worry about the pitiful balance, you get to feel good for helping one of society’s cast-offs, he’ll get pissed off in said business, instead, and take a big fuck-off shit on their floor that you wish you had the guts to, then he’ll be rewarded with food and shelter in the local hoosegow for a couple of weeks while you enjoy the passive agressive feeling of getting back at the stingy merchant.

Can you not apply the $0.16 to your next sandwich purchase? Do you only purchase sandwiches through the exchange of giftcards?
Use it the next time. Like a store credit it is designed to spend at their place, not someone else’s. It’s not a big deal. Certainly not worth bitching about, especially of you frequent the place.

I suspect that OB doesn’t nor have they ever worked in retail or food service. You can’t put a gift card with a balance into your deposit, and take coins out of your till to give back to someone, and expect it to balance at the end of the day. Cash and credit: they are not the same thing. The terms and conditions of a gift card are clearly marked. They aren’t out to fuck with you, they’re doing their damned jobs correctly.
^^ Not true. If your till is short 15.56 and you have the gift certificate receipt then its the same as your till being short 20 with a certificate receipt. I used to work at Ultramar and would gladly give cash back on gift cards. When it came time to cash out and do the nightly settlement I’d simply make a note of it on the deposit into the safe. Its not like I owned the station.
Then one year the owner gave me 40 worth of certificates for the crummy chinese place on the Bedford highway as a christmas bonus. So I took a buddy and we both ordered a coffee, just a coffee each. When the server came back to ask if we decided I asked for the check. She was surprised and pissed. So the manager (maybe the owner, who knows) comes out and says they’ll only cash one of the gift certificates (there were 2 each for 20) and they wouldn’t do it for the second. So we got a gram and a couple more coffees with the change. A few nights later when I was working a migrant came in and I ended up giving him the other 20. Made his night and probably stunk up that crummy restaurant at the same time.
But yeah, “No cash back is no cash back” but like I said, its not like the clerk owns the place and sometimes the few bucks cash back can make a world of difference if you live paycheck to paycheck.
I actually agree with the bitch, though petty. These bidnesses are counting on people saying what all the commenters are saying. Ah well, toss it, give it to a bum, etc… bottom line is the corporations are profiting off of every 15 cents here and 25 cents there you’re throwing away and they’re makin’ a killing off of their bullshit policy. Why can’t they be returned for the cash value? They were bought with cash? A gift card is a piece of merchandise just like any other thing you can purchase at the store. A place that does not offer refunds or cash back on store cards operates with unfair business practices. Dats why nobody fucks wit stupit gift cards. When will corporations/bidnezzes realize they would sell more and do better if they acted with integrity.
