So did anyone else hear about the random searches on the ferry and the bulletproof glass in the terminals starting April 1? What the fuck? At least on the bus I only have to worry about being videotaped and spied upon by several different cameras at any given time—haven’t had a cavity search yet. Is that’s what is next? X-ray machine at the bus stops too? Sniffers? Cops with AK-47s? Am I going to have to bend over to get out of my door every morning now? Holy fucking jesus! The terrorists have obviously already won. —Dartmouthy

don’t know, don’t take ferry, don’t give a fuck, either.
Well fuck….. no more using the ferry to get back and forth to my crack dealer’s place on the darkside.
guess that ruins my getaway plan for when I rob banks
Don’t worry about AK-47s, we don’t use them.
Fuckins Somali pirates may end up in Halifax Harbour, OB. You’ll be thankful when that bulletproof glass protects you from the pirates or some renegade flounder.
You’re right OP, cops with AK-47s is going too far. Give them to us drivers instead.
PDG. Don’t go Dirty Harry on us. “Go ahead punk. Get off my bus.” Chuckle.
its probably an april fools joke
I certainly wouldn’t support ANY searches, or even questioning by law enforcement…however I DO support UK-style CCTV cameras, staffed by civilians, NOT the cops, although they are in constant contact…
If you get mugged, robbed, assaulted, beaten by cops etc etc…it is amazing to have recourse to perhaps catch the bastards…I watched it happen all the time in the UK
I’m guessing it’s because it would be to easy to walk up to the bridge, shot the Captain and then drive the thing into the grey masses that tie up further down the pier.
I really doubt they care about your little green bag or that pipe you openly bought at Mary Janes. Probably looking for something with a little more pop.
Surprised no one clued in sooner.
you are right. i’d rather just get shot. i would rather get shot in the face than have bulletproof glass at a friggen ferry terminal.
it’s bad enough that they are watching me sit, on the bus… my privacy! i’m in the privacy of my own, public transportation, and they are watching me?!?! goodness. heavens to betsy. what is next?
but really i don’t know what to say. people are fucking nuts now. if you haven’t noticed. and i for one, don’t know how to do that fighty fighty thing. and rationalizing with someone who is high on whatever with a knife or a gun is, i imagine, pretty um… i’d have to be better at reaching people than i currently am. to do that with any success. so.
I’ve noticed the bulletproof glass, but wasn’t aware of the searches. I ride the ferry every day and have for almost 4 years. I have never noticed anything weird happening (except some drunk pissing overboard one night). I didn’t realize that there were enough problems on the ferry to warrant these new implementations. Any info?
Life sucks, why even post then?
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms states: “Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure.”
So wouldn’t they have to have probable cause?
If they try to search me you can bet I’ll put up a stink. I don’t want my joints taken away to be smoked by some fucker upholding a stupid law.
With Metro Transit sucking all the tax money they can to stay ‘afloat’ (pun intended). I personally believe they should have to show real cause for spending that kind of money. I’ve got no problem with public camera’s it helps keep areas where criminals believe they have an opportunity to mug someone pause. Plus if it does happen, there is a better chance the slime bag can be apprehended.
But searchs & bullet proof glass …give me a goddamn break that’s fucking bullshit. If anything we need bullet proof sheilds in taxi’s way more than we do in the ferry terminals. One only needs look at how many Taxi drivers have been attacked, robbed or killed in say the last 10 years & do a comparrison to how many people have been killed, attacked & robbed on the ferries !
My memory has a bunch of Taxi drivers who meet that criteria…I have NONE for the ferries.
If the powers that be & their political masters really want that kind of shit on at the ferry terminal, then they can pay for it out of their own damn pockets & “donate” it to Metro transit.
With a criteria like that ….IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN & THE GLASS WOULD COME DOWN TOMORROW ! ! !!
Combat Baby, you are right and wrong. You do have the right against search and seizure but it is not an absolute. Searches to go on the ferry would be no different than searches to go on an aircraft or any restricted government area. You don’t want to be searched, use another mode of transportation or don’t enter a restricted area.
CCTV doesn’t help the crime rate, it just moves it
“CCTV doesn’t help the crime rate, it just moves it”
I know what you’re saying, and to an extent this was true in the UK…and it led to more and more cameras, in more and more towns.
However, it IS possible for, say, a couple of girls out on the town in say Leicester square to go dinner to the theatre to the clubs and then home by bus all the while covered on CCTV…Of course the camera has no superpowers, or remotely operated ray gun…but it IS a witness.
As for “crime rates” being “helped”…well there’s still loads of crime in the UK, I’m not denying that…but how satisfying it must feel to actually have the bad guys caught for a change…compared to here where they pretend to scribble in a notebook, say a few soothing words about “wrong place, wrong time” and head back to Timmy’s…
“”You don’t want to be searched, use another mode of transportation…””
One day you’re gonna run out of modes of transportation, aren’t you?…
I suppose people like you would feel “safer” with identity cards and full body scanners on and off the fucking bus too? Safety is a myth…
It’s time to drop the Chicken Little style irrational fear-mongering!
“‘Any man that would choose to give up his freedoms for safety, deserves neither” – some old guy
Serves you right. When you use public transportation, you are traveling a lot of dodgy characters. If you don’t like the cavity searches, etc….buy a car like the rest of us. 0% financing and 0 down on all new Toyotas.
“The Go Faster Models” included.
Fuck you Sebastian_
I second that.. fuck you, Sebastian_..
Sebastien, you are wrong. The driver of any car in Canada actually loses many of the rights that a pedestrian has. A driver is required to show ID on demand, and to allow a cursory inspection of the vehicle for alchohol, and even a quick “patdown”, again for looking for booze…
A pedestrian does not have to surrender any information, or allow a law enforcement officer to rummage through their belongings…although they often do anyway, especially the RCMP, if they think they can get away with it….
