I’ve been covering a job held by a woman on maternity leave for the past year. She’s coming back to work in a few weeks. Of course, for the past few months I’ve been looking for work so when the job ends I won’t be unemployed. However, I really enjoy this job, your company and am good at what I do.

Suddenly, luck comes my way and my colleague puts in his notice. The only difference between his job and mine is his is permanent. But he’s leaving! Your company does a lot of hiring internally, so I applied, I even had a positive referral from my direct supervisor.

Turns out I didn’t get the job. I lost out to your fucking 22-year-old nephew! Your precious little nephew, who has just a high school diploma and no experience in this field, needed a job. So you give him a position I had to apply for with experience and post-secondary education. I busted my ass for you for thirteen months! A position with the duties I’ve been performing for the past thirteen months becomes available and instead of offering ME the job, you hand it to your dipshit nephew. Fuck you! You, sir, are a fucking asshole and a total moron! I assure you, NO ONE is happy with your decision. The guy who’s leaving just started training the kid, and he’s already less than thrilled with your sister’s baby boy.

It’s people like you that make it so difficult for us genuinely hard-working individuals with no mommy-daddy-auntie-uncle connections to get ahead. I hope your flesh and blood runs your company into the ground! Oh, and did I also say, FUCK YOU?! —Out of a Job and Slapped in The Face

  1. Nasty! and yes, unfair. and a bad business decision because if he keeps it up, his business will fail. morale will plummet first. (and no number of beatings will improve it) If his sister threatened to make his family life miserable unless he did it, he is to be pitied for his lack of strength and weak life. If he did it happily and willingly, you are best out of that company. it would only get worse. but yeah, this sucks.

  2. Agreed. This really sucks, OB. It’s a dog eat dog world out there. Good luck with your job hunt. I really hope you find an even better job.

  3. sometimes o.p., it’s not who or what you know, but who you will have to blow. if you are a female in this work world, to advance, you have to take a lot of shit. if a male, you have to learn how to suck up, and be a back stabber, 9 times out of 10.
every work place has a rat or mole or whatever you want to call them. they are the ones that are sucking up to the man. you might have to learn a few tricks, dirty or otherwise, to stay in the game too.
i have work for many different companies over the years, and be damned if i ever became a lacky to a fucked up boss. but today’s world, is a lot different. doesn’t matter how much brains you have, or experience. look around you today, see who the slouchiest ones are, and you will see the company pets. learn their tricks, and learn them fast.

  4. I don’t think OB said anything about being an asshole while on the job, Hugo, so I don’t think he/she’s burning any bridges.

I’m wondering if this breaks any laws — unfair hiring or something. I’d check into it, OB, with a lawyer (you can usually get a consultation for free or really cheap).

This REALLY sucks and honestly, even if they DID offer me a job to stay on in some capacity, I’d tell them to go shove it. Do you really want to work for an organization that does this?

Good luck with your job search, OB!

  5. Also, you could always book a meeting with the guy who hired his nephew and just ask why you weren’t hired.

You don’t have much to lose and if you’re very professional and frame it in a way that you want to know what to improve upon, you’ll back the fucker into a corner.

  6. PK, he’s left enough info in here(if he didn’t change details) for someone at his workplace to recognize him. I’ve had coworkers recognize more than one bitch about our shitty accountant. Not that they know it’s me, though, we all hate that cow.

  7. That’s how the world works. How do you think GW Bush was president for, wait for it… Two fucking terms, not just one.

  8. Holy fuck, what are you, new at life or something?

And good one….a “law” thats says you can’t hire your douchebag wife, husband, son, daughter, son/daughter-in-law, cousin, 2nd cousin, fuck buddy.

    Get a grip.

  9. ” Oh, and did I also say, FUCK YOU?!” – Ok, on a re-read, maybe the OB didn’t actually say it.

  10. Op, if everything that you say is acurate, your employer may have a very hard time demonstrating that they did not discriminate against you. Go see a lawyer, the first visit is ussually free.

  11. Giving you a pass because your upset, wishing the guys company to get run into the ground will help nothing other then hurting those still working there,if the company goes so do the workers and that creates more competition for you in the job hunt. Move on to better things. Good Luck on the hunt.

  12. I sympathize with there OP. I’m sure the sister nagged the snot out of her brother about that position until he acquiesced. And you just know the nephew really appreciates what his mother did for him.

  13. Must be a lot of Lebs reading this thread and getting upset with me exposing their business practices. Quit hatin’, ya bunch of Tabouli-munching kibbi heads!

  14. I have found that working for Lebanese – they treat you like family. Specifically, their female daughters.

  15. Well OB, when you create a business and put your own money into it, then you can hire anyone you like. Now is this hiring wise businesswise? Time will tell.
