This is less a “bitch,” more an earnest public service announcement to the drivers of our city.

Many motorists around here see a bike in front of them and think “MUST PASS,” regardless of how fast the cyclist is going or what’s ahead of them both.

I was cycling north on Robie during rush hour today. Not stop-and-go traffic, but pretty slow going. There is no need to inch up dangerously close alongside me — I’m going just as fast as the car in front. What are you gonna do, pass me, then fly over everyone else?

Same goes for four-way stops. More than once on Vernon I’ve had someone whip around me only to screech to a halt at the stop sign ten metres ahead. —Ben

  1. It’s because they’re stupid. Move to the left enough when approaching vernon so that they don’t have room to go around you. problem solved.

  2. well ben, it has been said many times already about bikes and their riders. being douches that is, and thinking they have an invisible shield around them. but don’t get pissed at me, i’m only pointing out what the majority think.
there were many times, i almost nailed a person on a bike, but had just enough warning that they are still alive today. some cyclists are idiots and also some drivers. it is up to all to make the roads safe, for you and i both. if you love your life, then you know what i mean. there are those out there, that have some kind of death wish.
i sincerely hope you think about this next time you go out, because ben, it could very well be your last.

  3. People driving vehicles do stupid things when driving around other vehicles, you expected this to be any different around cyclists? I hope you don’t plan on writing a bitch about every situation that perplexes you on driving skills/rules of the road.

  4. Haha yep, well I have on more than one occation chased these people down, on foot ,till they hit a light, then I take out my keys and drag them down the side of the vehicle, sometimes this also works for people who park across sidewalks.
See there are ways to deal with these people, and see when ur on foot or bike they can’t ask for insurance, people will learn to respect others or pay for a new paint job. Haha

  5. Ben, the only thing I have to offer is ‘ride defensively and be safe’. I’m not brave enough be a cyclist in the city because I’ve seen too many shit moves from drivers of motor vehicles … not only around cyclists, but pedestrians and other vehicles. I could say get their plate and report them, but in reality that’s not always an option … and likely wouldn’t change much anyway.

I must also say that I’ve seen some cyclists do some pretty dumb shit too … like the dude I regularly see going down Chebuc in heavy rush hour traffic. He consistently rides like a bat outta hell squeezing in next to and passing vehicles where he shouldn’t … and have even witnessed him have to put his foot against the curb because he’s nearly crashed into a pole or the car next to him while trying to squeeze through … and this happening when it’s dark and you can’t see him coming up along side. If he has a death wish … fine … but no motorist wants to be ‘responsible’ for his injury as a result of unsafe cycling.

  6. please Jim… find yet ANOTHER way to prove to all of us you’re a complete, 100% conveniently pre-packaged idiot.

I swear, the slice of american cheese in my lunch had more culture.

  7. I seriously think he/she is an hospital patient: Way too incoherent to qualify as deliberate trolling.

  8. You think im trying to prove something? No im not, as usual im trying to tell you how it needs to be if you want life to be good for everyone around us, I just don’t rly like doing it online, cause ppl say stupid shit and i really don’t think if you ppl were having coffee in a shop with me, that y’all would speak the same.
This is how I actually speak in real life, and how I act.
Until you people stop devaluing voices ya are doomed to live the life you do, which sickens me for most of ya.
In person is different cause here you can just not listen. In public ya can’t shut me down.
I wish I was a troll man, I wish I didn’t have to be extreme, but I’ve bout had enough …

  9. Haha see ya got me all wrong, im reasonable. Just when ppl say stupid shit it gets me worked up :S
That pic is soon cute 😛

I just like to show ppl that i can’t be more crazy than them, so if ya don’t want stupid nonsence like, “let’s use old ppl for body parts”.
Don’t say things like children owe perents something or anything in payment for raising them, for example …

  10. If you speak like you do on here in public, you would probably get put into a hospital or just ignored like most people do with the blithering crackheads. It’s not necessarily that we don’t like what you say, it’s that we have no clue what you’re saying because your language skills are seriously lacking. I don’t care so much about knowing the difference between “you’re” and “your” but at least being able to put together a sentence that makes sense would really help you communicate whatever message you’re trying to say. You think nobody has ever been ridiculed in public/face-to-face? What a glorious childhood you must have had.

  11. LoL, once again you have nothing to add see, its not my failing that you can’t keep up bud. Those that can’t adapt will be left behind. The things im saying are not hard to understand,if that was the case you would ask questions. You just don’t like what I say because it threatens your sesabilaties,so stop being a lie and pick apart what I say, naa ya are too fat and pig headed right?

  12. In Nova Scotia, driving regulations state the car driver can legally honk their horn before passing. Hopefully next time whatever car comes up on the cyclist honks their horn and scares the shit out of the cyclist. I do it…..it’s funny when you see them wobble.

  13. Its fun hurting your car with keys also, id do it just if you were parked over a line ina parking lot.

  14. “see ya (sic) got me all wrong, im (sic) reasonable.”

“Its (sic) fun hurting your car with keys…id (sic) do it just if you were parked over a line ina (sic) parking lot”

you’re that special kind of stupid I’ve been hearing about…

  15. Yeah sure its stupid and sick to be sick and tired of being pushed around by drivers ? , you think its funny to try to scare a biker, just trying to get by and get to work, well I think its fun to show you that is wrong, see you don’t just get to do whatever you want bud, and if ya wanna push ppl around, ya gonna get owned, understand little fella ?
Because as we know unless a person is caught, and since there is no law against tripping with my keys in my hand, and accidently scratching your car, just like is ok for u to blow your horn 🙂

  16. I’ve seen dumb cyclists, and I’ve seen dumb drivers.

but, on this website, I’ve mostly seen people talk like dumb drivers.

It’s sad how little effort is spent to promote a spirit of bicycle safety.

  17. Jim I would like to make a reply to this comment of yours if that is OK with you

“Its fun hurting your car with keys also, id do it just if you were parked over a line ina parking lot.”

Have you ever thought that it is possibly not that person’s fault for parking over the line? Maybe when they arrived to that spot the car beside them was over the line so they also had to park like that to be able to get out of the car. Than the original “bad parker” takes their car and leaves, and someone else shows up to take their spot. So the trend continues until you heroicly show up with keys in hand and key some innocent old ladys car who is barely able to live off her pension but now has to fork over a couple hundred bucks to fix the damage you caused. Nice.

  18. I definitely don’t whip around anyone, and I’m not obnoxious about it, but I like to pass cyclists simply because I’m paranoid about hitting them, in the same way I would be paranoid about hitting a parent walking with a stroller in the road, or a runner. It’s got nothing to do with the speed you go. When you’re just a body unprotected by sheet metal, in the middle of a bunch of vehicles, it immediately makes my brain go, “I’ve gotta get out of this guy’s way,” so then my objective is to safely pass you.

  19. Thank you for your response maple leafs guy 🙂 . Listen I was just being an ass because people saying they blow their horn to scare a guy on a bike, and that made me very angry. I would never do such a thing ever, never have, never would. Unless they did something to me or I observed them do something. Now as to the other things i said, like if people park across a sidewalk, yes I have and will do it then. I really do respect people.

But if im disrespected, I guarantee you I will be able to out crazy ya. Id prefer to not have to, but sure as fuck I’ll win that prize. If any of you had been through what i have ,you would be a bit unstable too, prob.

I really am serious, I reserve violence and distruction ,for only the most grevious of offenders. Most times I do not even if i want to if the snow bank isn’t too big I’ll go around, but a few times per decade, someone will do the wrong thing and , rather than call the police and get a call back 5 hrs later, saying they will not even go see, well im not playing the game by your fixed set of rules, sorry no.

Its like I’ve explained before, if my PM and his cronies, do not follow rules. Why should I? If they can park on side walk, the laws are void to me. You people need to realized there are consiquences. And as for the old lady, I don’t care, im disabled and we are all equal. Old people are not special, they either play by the same rules, or I make my own rules.

The occupy movement, though run by unions, paid by union reps. Their methods may be wrong, but what choice do they have. I hate them, I know they are really trying to distract from issues they support or are paid to. Problem is you people allowed rules to be lop sided, when a guy goes to jail for 13 yrs for growing pot, and a murder goes to jail for 3. Suddenly, being a hitman for hire, looks quite appealing.

In the 90s I found out, police only press charges if they want to,police need to be sure a conviction is possible. So that means, as long as we are sure no one is watching, and no cameras, or vision is blocked. That its not against the law. Like if you are assaulted, and you call the police, they do not have to help you. They just explain, you can go to the court house and press charges. So i just made a personal policy, cut out the middle man, save our tax dollars.

  20. Just keep in mind, Jim, that the accepted order of things is Rape, then Pillage and only then – Burn
