I feel dumber since moving here. Right is not synonymous with “very.” The past tense of “come” is not “come” – it’s came. And please, learn how to spell. Stupid Haligonians….

Fearful

  1. I think you’re really referring to Cape Bretoners and Newfoundlanders who have moved to Halifax. “Right” instead of “very” is just a regional thing. Just like “pop” versus “soda”.I’m with you on the “come” thing though. It sound ign’ant.

  2. Jammie for your information the poster is referring to the term “Come from away” which is a NOVA SCOTIA term, NOT a Newfoundlander term. You speak as though Nova Scotians have no slang at all. But let me tell you, “Bub” is NOT Newfoundlander either. If you haven’t be able to figure it out yet, I am a Newfoundlander and I speak better english than half of the people I’ve encountered here. I’m not saying that all Newfoundlanders do, but please don’t make generalizations. It makes you ignorant.

  3. I find it strange that many people in Halifax or from out West tend to make fun of regional accents and colloquialisms. We should be proud of our many diverse ways of speaking and writing. Many people from the Bay of Fundy or Cape Breton feel pressured to change their accents to more socially acceptable ones when they settle here. I was once told by a nurse, in a hospital, that medical personal often treat people who have regional accents as if they are less intelligent. Why would that be? It’s common for people in the Atlantic Provinces to use a traditional Canadian/ U.K. form of spelling as well, such as using –ises instead of -izes, as suffixes, etc. while it is much more American out past Quebec. This may lead some Canadians to view our way of writing as misspelled, as the majority of our media comes from Ontario, America or elsewhere. I have found that teachers will mark students wrong on papers, when they use Canadian spellings that are established as correct in the Oxford Canadian Dictionary. I’ve actually had professors, when I was younger tell me that practising is spelled with a c and et cetera. There are places in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland that have been settled for nearly 400 years. If that doesn’t validate our way of speaking and make it as relevant and communicative as something that is spoken in a large city elsewhere, that holds few ties to us, then what does? If we understand it, then that is what matters. It would be a little sad if everyone here spoke and wrote the exact same way as someone in New York or Toronto. When I was in university, I took a French course and quickly discovered that the curriculum was based upon European French. Why aren’t we learning Canadian French? If I’m in Nova Scotia, then why wouldn’t I be taught Acadian French or QuĂ©bĂ©cois? I’m proud of my accent and cultural idiosyncrasies and encourage others to be as well. When I was in England and Scotland, it was recognised that different places and peoples had different ways of spelling and speaking. It reinforced my love for Nova Scotia as we are very similar, here. Telling people that the historical way that they communicate is wrong or uneducated is a great way to make people feel ashamed of their heritage and way of life. Saying “right” comes from the Gaidhlig way of saying things, as does a lot of our interesting little sentence structures. What nerve do you have as the OP to come into a place and call us stupid because we speak differently than wherever it is you hail from? I never would do that if I visited the place you grew up. It’s disrespectful, close-minded and prejudicial.

  4. The OP said nothing about “come from away”. He or she said that the past tense of “come” is “came”. He was noting that many people in this part of the world say things like “I just come up from the store”, instead of “I just came up from the store”. It is a incorrect conjugation.Read the OP before you flame me. You got it all wrong.

  5. And I was talking about “it’s right hot out” as being a Newfoundland thing and a Cape Breton thing. Cape Bretoners, last time i checked, are Nova Scotians. Further, I was saying it’s regional, just like “pop” or “soda”, and thus, that it shouldn’t be considered ignorant.Again, read what people write before you go off on them, and stop being so defensive about perceived slights that didn’t even happen. And shut up Floyd.

  6. Jammie, I am not going lower myself into this form of abusive posting on your part… And FYI, I heard somewhere that the coast is going to offer up a bounty for trolls such as yourself… Beware!

  7. Floyd? What abuse? I really and truly don’t know what you are talking about. READ these posts and tell me where the abuse is. This is just bizarre.

  8. I’m glad you are able to make yourself believe you are taking some sort of high road. But let’s be clear that you and i had absolutely no interaction until, after you started with these strange posts about me and Homie being the same person about three weeks ago and making personal attacks on me for no reason, I mentioned to Pete that he may be lumped into the same category because people who don’t like Halifax seem to be tarred with the same brush. In no other posts have I ever talked to you or responded to you, yet in several posts you have slammed me, told me to “wise the fuck up” after I had corrected someone’s misunderstanding about something I said, accused me of “abuse”, et.c etc.It is quite clear that you are baiting me, trolling, whatever you want to call it, and not the other way around.Again, I challenge you to reread this thread and tell me who I abused, and how? You simply can’t do it.

  9. Well its clear to me that this is quite upsetting to you… So in the interests of civility and decorum,,, I am going to be the bigger person,,, and say OK… Let’s have it YOUR way then…Really… I am not THAT hard to get a long with…

  10. Jammie’s probably out dusting off one of his many sockpuppets and hoping to bolster some badly needed support for his argument, even though I have already stated that I AGREE with him…Some people just don’t know when to give it up…

  11. I’m only trying to get it across that i said nothing abusive to anyone. I talked about “right” versus “very”, and “come” versus “came”, and Nicole misunderstood so I corrected her.You swore at me. Being condescending and sarcastic doesn’t make you a bigger person. It just means that you recognize that you have absolutely no recourse to defend your position.

  12. You didn’t say you agree with me. you said in a very sarcastic way, “have it YOUR way.”Anyway, I really must stop taking your bait. I know what I’m feeding…

  13. For someone who claims to have lived in a homeless shelter for fun and enjoyment on some kind of social experiment, I thought you would be a bit more tuned in to whats going on…Why don’t you just ADMIT that the MTP story was total fiction, and then just MAYBE we can start to bridge some of the other gaps also…I am willing to take the first step, but the next step is up to you…

  14. Floyd, you’ve lost me completely now. Homeless shelter? What is an MTP?I think I’m starting to understand why you’re suddenly aiming all this bizarre animosity towards me, seemingly out of the blue. You really think I’m someone else! And someone with whom you have some sort of negative history…I realize there is nothing I can say to demonstrate otherwise. That’s the nature of online forums (fora?) And once someone has decided they see a conspiracy, they take all denials as reaffirmations. It’s natural; it’s called confirmation bias.Sorry to have argued with you for so long; I thought there might be a logical conclusion to reach…but it is a much bigger misunderstanding than I realized. So, I’ll stop trying to respond to you, knowing that your attacks are informed by some kind of ugly history with another person.

  15. If that was the case then you would think you would feel smarter living here wouldn’t you ?

  16. I love the idea that, somehow, speaking proper English is “snobby”. It’s implied that the poor speakers are somehow above it all or more enlightened. *giggle*

  17. If I hear one more person say “I seen”, instead of “I saw” or “I have seen” I think I’m going to lose my mind.Oh, and there’s no ‘s’ on the end of anyway…

  18. Thats very snobby. Stop sniffing your own farts. They way you speak doesn’t determine your Intelligence or what you give back to society.

  19. As I already knew,Nicole your a waist product!You can’t seem to get along anywhere,huh?And by the way,slang is not proper English,DUH!

  20. Fearful,I can’t say that I’m with you on that one, because actually I’ve experienced more out of life (b…s…) since being here, but I definately understand your reasonings though!!!Nobody is stupid, niave maybe, but not stupid!!!

  21. Alison, re your comment that “nobody is stupid” let me just say that only somebody who is pretty damn stupid would say such a stupid fucking thing…I hope you were able to read this, so I made sure to type very slowly…

  22. Floyd, you’re a waist product, and a little bit of a thigh product. You’ve already made up my mind about you.Don’t mind me, I’m just speaking my mouth.
