Yes, it’s terrible when those who are able bodied sit and watch the eldery/handicapped stand, but if it really bothers you and your spouse that much, why don’t you speak up and ask for a seat? Most people won’t mind trading places with someone less fortunate or in poor physical condition.

My boyfriend’s grandmother fell broke her arm because no one gave her a seat on the subway.A few months back, during the morning rush, there was an old women standing for about 5 stops- I saw these 4 jackasses (business men and women) just sitting and pretending like they didn’t see her so I called them out on it- that I couldn’t believe not one of them had offered her a seat (I was standing). I wasn’t overly bitchy but had a tone. One asshole actually said that because I called them out, he wasn’t going to give her a seat- just to spite me! They all just sat there like complete assholes and the lady eventually got off. I couldn’t believe it- people who don’t give up their seats to pregnant, elderly, handicapped (my friend who had a hip replacement at 28) are the scum of the earth. OP, you’re lucky you have such a great boyfriend!

I’m starting to respect those that give up their seats more and more lately. I’m 6mos pregnant, and you wouldn’t believe how many people just ignore me with my big belly as I struggle to maintain my balance as the bus rocks to and fro… People need to stop being so selfish.
