I was on the back of a ski-doo when the driver decided to cut across the harbour (not Halifax harbour). The rear end kept dipping down as we sped across the ice. It took me a minute to realize that our machine was actually falling through the ice. Only airplane fuel, the high speed of the racer and luck kept us from certain death. I didn’t have to freak out when we safely reached the other side–he was as pale as a ghost and shaking all over. His friend died the following year doing the same thing. And still, the local young guys continued to attempt a harbour crossing.
HRM says the ice is 8 inches thick on Lake Banook. That’s safe enough to drive across on a motorbike.

Sarey, I know the area that the OP’s talking about. The current is really quite heavy in that area, and I’d hazard a guess that the ice is maybe only a few inches thick.
Just as long as HRM manages to dredge up the body in the spring thaw. Fecal coliform is bad enough but I ain’t swimming in cadaver gumbo this summer.

AND THE VERY FIRST THING YOU ARE TAUGHT….IS NOT TO ENDANGER YOURSELF !
THose of you who say different and spew that stupid …it’ll endanger the rescuers are idiots…it might endanger other idiots to who attempt to rescue them without the proper equipment & back up…but real trained professionals are rarely in the circumstances as the idiot who got themselves in trouble in the first place.
IF , just if, you guy’s were right & every rescuer was in mortal danger…the same danger as the idiot who caused the problem…why are more of them not killed ???

The answer quite simply is , they are not putting themselves into the same situation, without the ability to survive !
I never really feel sorry when these guys go through the ice in well known high risk areas. Lake Banook maybe 8″ thick but that is true about the currents under the bridge. Majority of Skidoo (or other motorized vehicles) accidents happen in these types of areas where the currents compromise the ice thickness.
