Why in the holy fuck is everyone wearing those over-priced three-tone Canadian goose jackets? I’m glad they’re made in Canada, but not happy about the exploitation of “traditional native hunting practices,” which the company claims to support. I don’t even know how people stand to walk around in them in Nova Scotia; they’re designed to withstand the temperatures of the Northern Arctic or Southern Antarctic, not -3 in Halifax.

Maybe in Toronto, Montreal, or Winnipeg these garments are at least somewhat functional, but I’ve seen people sweating while wearing those things, but no way will they take them off because then they won’t get to sport their $600 indulgence and emphasize how their ridiculous and impractical purchase makes them trendy and part of the fashionable (ie. Jewish girls from Toronto) social echelon.

If people buy them to support the Canadian economy, why not buy an actual jacket whose materials are wholly made in Canada, something made out of wool or hide, for instance, available in many local craft shops or online boutiques, for half the cost, and half the commericalization of your personality. Or, buy something second-hand to reduce the output to landfills.

These jackets, much like Blundstones, lululemon, and Crocs, will eventually be tossed aside next season when something else “cool” is determined to be more consumable.

Makes me sick.

—consume equals doom

  1. i have a Canada Goose jacket. It’s incredible. The best purchase I made last year. It keeps me really warm and has all kinds of pockets. The functionality of the jacket is worth the money, although I bought it on ebay for a few hundred bucks…

  2. mmmmmm steak…..
    beef’s now on the menu.

how you all influence my diet… shame.

I’m with sebastian though in that a durable leather jacket can pretty much be worn from october to may. zip when it’s cold, open when it’s not and bob’s your uncle.

  3. just checked…. they use DUCK to fill the things out… not geese.
    That’s a bit misleading….
If I’m paying that much for a Canada Goose Jacket… it better DAMN WELL have goose in ‘er.

  4. I will buy what I want, when I want and fuck environmentalists, PETA, fashion police or any other shit for brains asshole who doesn’t like it.

  5. Where do you get one of these jackets? They sound great and I’m tired of being cold all the time. Anyone got some links to photos/stores?

  6. Better off with a carhartt work jacket . they are warm – won’t rip easily – wash easily and you can work in them . Mines good in the -20 to -35 out in the prairies . So are the – 40 steel toe snow boots !!! I’d cook in them in back home weather !!!

  7. Survival suits and a pair of Sorels for the really cold days. You look like a hoser, but it’s all good. Down jackets are great for those bitter cold days, but synthetic is better for a majority of days in Halifax. For most people though, it’s splitting hairs.

What would you suggest OP? Wool coats that don’t do shit? Or jackets made in Indonesia by slave labour?

  8. but writer, they look so cool, and they provide an excellent face cover when you are breaking the law.

  9. This reminded me of two things:

    1. The woman(?) I saw on Quinpool the other day wearing one and I thought “man, I wish I would have bought one last year when The Trail Shop was blowing them out cheap,
    2. The “Hiking Boots” bitch.

  10. The problem with those jackets is you can’t do anything even remotely strenuous, without sweating in the damn thing…& once you start sweating, your going to get cold, no matter what you have on, once you stop.
So great for really cold weather, not so good for most of the time around here. Your better off owning a good quality rain coat, that breaths & wearing several layers under it. Because as sure as day follows night, follows day follows night…its going to rain around here soon, & this time of year it’ll be cold.
