Isn’t it nice to see Dexter and our ruling NDP party finding money for Bowater? 50 million dollars over 5 years to be exact. Saving jobs is always a good idea, but where will these jobs go when the 50 million runs out? Will there even be a pulp industry in five years? It’s not hard to see that the industry is failing and in a big way. Is it wise to be putting millions of dollars in a dying venture?

Where is all the money for schools? Why do we have to pay $50 dollars for school supplies such as kleenex and tennis balls!? What about waiting 8 months for an MRI because there is simply no money for healthcare to install or operate more? What about the abhorrent state of most of our secondary roads, because of course… there is no money.

Our province has a history or propping up unsuccessful ventures and this will do nothing more than add to the cue of greedy trough munching companies threatening to leave our province if they aren’t granted public funds, all the while paying million dollar bonuses and granting golden parachute severance packages. Throughly disgusted with my tax dollars going towards keeping terminal industries on life support!! —Maelstrom

  1. See, this is the thing: corporations like this (especially unionized ones) cry poor mouth and go on about how they’re going to close down and leave, blahblah. Usually around the time the collective agreement is up for negotiation.

But all it is is a SCARE tactic. These organizations aren’t going anywhere — but you can make damn sure they’re using the ‘threat’ of leaving to get more incentives from the government, to reduce concessions they’d have to make in the collective bargaining environment, to reduce a unionized workforce, or, in this case, reduce the workforce AND get money from the government.

Next time the ppl working there should offer to help them pack. They’d probably cut the shit after that. It’s worked before.

  2. Tell me something people, why can they take the cape breton kids 1500$ for supposidly selling drugs. Without even a court case, yet extortion of public funds is legal and we cannot take the mill for raping the environment, giving huge bonuses then crying poverty. And why must a single mother give full access to the gov to get welfare, yet corporate welfare comes with protections against action toward the company let alone the employee/managements personal information.
Take the business over by force the same as they would take your house if you didn’t pay your bills, if you are not willing to go to the same lengths to kept your job/freedom as they are to take it away you do not deserve it you sniveling little part.
Do you doubt they would show up with police and sherrifs to forcably remove you from your home?, well they sure doubt that you have the will or the intelligence to do anything about. When by all rights there should be a huge mob showing up, willing to die if nessesary to stop them. But only in the middle east is violent revolution legal right?

  3. The reason is simple why Bowater got money and New Page didn’t, DD grew up in Queen’s County where Bowater is located.

  4. Any plant that can give 2 of its officials 4 million dollars in bonuses for a so called, failing plant ,doesn’t need our money.
By the way I am a unionised worker.
The problem as I see it is the plant may not be profitable ENOUGH…but it is obviously profitable or they would have simply shut it down. One cannot write checks for 4 million dollars on a bank account that is empty, for two of the top cronies in the group!

If the NDP really wants to spend 50 million dollars on something, why not a ferry boat for Yarmouth, one that isn’t flashy & goes 50 mph. No instead one like the boats Newfoundland has, where it can carry trucks with christmas trees & fish & lobsters to the USofA’s huge market place faster & cheaper than them driving all the way out of NS through New Brunswick & Maine !

  5. Jim, did the Shamanic healers at the First Aid Tent offer you a dime bag of “Magic Beans” in exchange for your anti-psychotics when you were living at the Grand Parade?

  6. See mister cat in a hat, I am not a protester, you label me in order to de value my opinion, because you are a coward. Fact is we must stand up for what is right, not what is best for the masses. I welcome any of you to have a discussion in person and I’ll buy the coffee and you can call me names and stuff all ya want, but when i say things that make you violent and you put a hand on me or anything physically aggressive, well you will then be able to draw some of the public funds you hate so much. I am not scared of you people, and though I know I know nothing, I know that you know less. Until you can say things in defence of your position you have no right to an opinion idiots

  7. AHAHAHA painy! I put a newborn knitted hat on molly last night and while she did sit there and not attempt to get it off her head, she DID give me a look that screamed “you just wait until you go to sleep, you c-unt!….”

  8. Wow Jim, you’re blowin my mind man, with all these facts and stuff. It’s too bad you don’t have your own web blog on social lawiology, that’s something I’d keep on the top of my favorites list.

  9. I agree OB. The government needs to get out of the bailout business. If a business cannot stay in the black, let them go bankrupt. Those employees can find jobs elsewhere.

  10. As Bro Tim said, old pork chop was born in Milton, a hop skip and a jump from Liverpool.
It’s the same scenario as when combover Buchanan used to ship truckloads of dosh to prop up Sydney Steel.

Local boy makes good, brings home the bacon.

  11. harper devil , I don’t need facts because like a religious zellot I know what is right because I have seen the best and worst of mankind and both sides are dirty and ridden with ignorance, so why would facts be needed.

Where are the facts you have to counter my so called ” non facts” ?, seems you are a pot and i a tea cup, did that also loose you? Aww sorry here I’ll explain, see the two are different ,and silly me I made a joke and mixed two nursery rymes, yes I know you were raised by a tv so those are foregion to you sorry, and i mixed the old racist adage with the tea cup and pot, and i like totally mixed them and junk and im like a comedian and junk like ya know.

So like I was saying, unless you have something to add, maybe just listen and ask questions until ya grasp the substance of the convo, K?

  12. Jim, you STARTED a sentence with a fucking comma…..
    good god man.

you obviously don’t use Word… everything you type out would be underlined with squiggles indicating that, as pertains to english, your grammar is the equivalent of a retarded 2 yr old monkey writing with his foot using his own feces.

  13. I’m not under 20 Jim, Honest!!
I am quite unhappy with the government bailing out Bowater. I believe it is quite hypocritical for an NDP government to give $50 million to a major corporation, one which had their CEO collect $4 million in bonuses. Neither Bowater nor New Page need to be saved. The need by this government and previous ones to prop up dying industries is something that seems to be done over and over again. Not learning from history.

  14. fuck them all, printed matter on paper is almost passee, and within 5 years, just about everything will be done thru the net. the only paper you will need soon, will be bum wipe.

  15. The questions is : Where will all these jobs go BEFORE the money runs out. They’ve made no promises

  16. what do you wipe your ass with OP? Paper ain’t so passay anymore is it? unless you prefer to use your hand like person from a 3rd world country. Speaking of third world countries, people are starving and dying over there. Quit being so damn ungrateful. Your health care is free. MRI’s and shit take time. Deal. You’re bitching about potholes? Wanna see change, then put your money where your mouth is and sponsor a child in Africa. Maybe then you will see how good you have it.
