We have the third highest paid premier in Canada. We have some of the highest paid Cabinet Ministers, a number of whom will be receiving other public sector pensions. We have a MLA pension plan which an ‘independent’ commission reviewed and resulted in some tinkering around the edges but no significant changes and which is broadly viewed as unaffordable.

Now is the time for real reform starting with the premier and the MLAs. Reduce the salaries and go with matching RRSPs for pensions. This should be one of the main election issues. We can’t afford all this. –Disgruntled Taxpayer

  1. That would certainly help; but our main problem in government actually isn’t the elected officials. It’s the throngs of provincial public services workers.

NS has the highest amount of public service workers per capita in the country, and that group doesn’t perform very well at all. Who do you know gets a job in government because they want to achieve something? they go for ‘job security’.

Think of the bluenose2; the reason that went so badly doesn’t have anything to do with elected officials, and everything to do with a bloated bureaucracy that is far more concerned with staying out of trouble then doing a good job. This is where our money is going, to subsidize non-workers who punch the clock and do nothing in-between 9-5, if they go to ‘work’ at all.

I’ll also pre-emptively respond to the loser reading this and thinking I’m jealous. I’m way better than that. Some of us actually want to do something useful with our time. What the government can do is just get out of the way. I don’t care if they don’t work, just don’t get in my way of getting things done.

  2. Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land, they own and control the corporations that’ve long since bought and paid for, the senate, the congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pocket, and they own all the big media companies so they control just about all of the news and the information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But I’ll tell you what they don’t want. They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. George Carlin

  3. Poor Uncle Moneybags, such an appropriate quote but I almost stopped reading at
“congress”. It would have been more clear had you used “Quote” marks.

  4. Another uniformed opinion. Please become fully informed before commenting as it becomes tedious to have read nonsense and conjecture.

  5. I would love to have a job where I have to pay too much in taxes…think about it, you would too.
