As a smoker (and a former non-smoker), I am absolutely furious. Yes, I have a bad habit, but it happens to be one that I enjoy, seemingly much to the chagrin of every single non-smoker in Halifax.

I wouldn’t want smoke blown in my face either, which is why I DON’T smoke in the presence of non-smokers. I go to the designated smoking areas, I even switch the hand my cigarette is in if I am passing someone on the street. I smoke outside of my own home so as not to offend guests who may not appreciate being surrounded by smoke.

But what really pisses me off the most are the people who feel it is their God-given right to lecture me on the street for being a smoker. Why is it something that people feel they have the right to comment on? You used to smoke but you quit and it was the best decision you ever made? Good for you! I don’t give a shit. Smoking will kill me? I’m quite aware- nobody will let me forget it!

I’m thinking of walking up to obese people eating cheeseburgers in MacDonald’s and saying, “I used to be overweight, too- then I stopped eating that shit and now look at me!” and laughing. Or maybe I could start harassing the people in bars who are stuck to the screens of VLTs- “You’re wasting your money- that’s a terrible habit!”

Yes, I smoke. But I do it as respectfully as possible, and it is my choice to do so. The next time you think about making a comment to a smoker, or faking a cough as you walk by, do us all a favour and just cross the damn street. You might not be the obese person who’s probably going to die of a heart attack long before I succumb to lung cancer, or the person wasting their children’s education fund on a slot machine, but I’m willing to bet you’ve got some kind of habit I think is really stupid, too. —SmokeLover

  1. Tell them to FUCK RIGHT OFF!. You worked for the money to buy them and you are paying the same taxes as anybody else in this socialist worker’s paradise. As long as you aren’t violating current laws, blowing smoke in their faces and picking up your butts they can get bent. Sure it’s unhealthy, but so fucking what? Just about everything even remotely enjoyable comes at a cost so enjoy your pleasures while you have them.
Broccoli and exercise suck wangers and all it’s going to buy you is about 10 more years of broccoli and exercise so fuck that noise.
Fall out Troops. Smoke ’em if you got ’em..

  2. This is the only pro-smoker bitch I can recall reading on this site that I actually agree with.

  3. Let me guess, all those cig butts on the sidewalks, on streets, and thrown from car windows are not from smokers? Pick up your butts, or do us non-smokers a favor and inhale them and choke.

  4. Funny no one has ever gotten in my face about my smoking. Maybe it’s my size and look on my face that says “one word and I’ll smoke you” keep them at bay.

  5. …but you smoke a pipe right timothy? that’s what i picture anyway…full of regular tobacco of course^^

  6. I’m not a smoker, but if someone goes up to a random smoker in the street and tries to lecture them I say pull their jacket over their head and punch them in the gut.

  7. “I even switch the hand my cigarette is in if I am passing someone on the street.”

WOW! Somebody start the Canonization process for this guy!

  8. Amen. I was outside my school and some chick walked by as close as she could to the smoker section while still heading to her destination, down the street. Completely avoidable, by using the sidewalk and not walking arcross the patch of grass we all smoke on. Anywho, as she walks by she starts fanning the air in front of her face and obviously fake coughing. I just chuckled to myslef. I dont get it though, she had no need to even come remotely close to the group. I agree with this bitch completely.

  9. For some reason smokers seem to think they have “rights.”

No, breathing clean air is a RIGHT….sucking on cancer sticks, as far as the law is concerned, is a privilege.

I agree with the crux of this bitch: myob. I’m all for that, but I still think smoking is a dirty nasty disgusting habit that has been proven in a previous bitch comment stats to be way more expensive on the health care system than obesity.

    Just sayin’ 😛

  10. I happily dispose of my cigarette butts in receptacles where they are available.. heck, I’ll even walk an extra 40 or 50 feet to a receptacle. They should have more of them around. I guess I could throw my butts in the garbage can but it could cause a fire since I don’t want to butt it out first.
If I’m in a scenic place, such as a park or beach, I will always take my butts with my and dispose of them in the garbage. On the street? I just chuck ’em on the ground. They pay people to sweep the sidewalks anyway. If they don’t want people to throw them on the ground, install a couple of receptacles around places where people usually smoke.

  11. I love how smokers use overweight/fat people as a scapegoat when they get cunted out. But it’s okay for the smokers to rag on fat people but it’s downright fascism to rag on smokers for stinking up the air with toxins.

  12. oh btw non smokers, if people didn’t throw their butts on the ground, what would the bums use to smoke, other than buy cigars.

  13. If you do respect non smokers as much as you claim, I (a non smoker) respect you in return. The reason smokers do get harassed so much is simple though. Everyone has habits, but smoking is one of the only habits that leeches to the people around you. You might be standing in the designated smoking areas, but I didn’t designate those areas, and chances are they’re right in front of a door I need to enter, or basically right beside the bus shelter I’m standing in, etc etc… for non smokers its simply not good enough for you to be standing off to the side. I can smell a single lit cigarette 2 blocks away if the wind is right.

Like I said though, I do respect you for obeying the rules. At least you’re not the douche standing IN the bus shelter smoking while everyone else is out in the rain and then cussing out anyone who says something. Come to think of it, even if you do stand out in the rain to smoke then you’re that stinky fucker on the bus who smells like nasty wet cigarettes nobody wants to sit next to. See, you just can’t win.

  14. “I can smell a single lit cigarette 2 blocks away if the wind is right.” Now there’s a bullshit comment if I ever heard one. What are you a fucking bloodhound? It’s BS like that that pisses people off.

  15. I have one of those bloodhound noses too lol I once smelled a dessert (I think it was caramel pudding or something) in a restaurant from 6 tables away, and a cigarette smell in a breath of someone who smoked one cigarette hours ago etc. Sometimes it is quite a curse.

  16. Ever think your nasty cigarette smoke is actually making people cough as they walk by? Why should they have to cross the street just to avoid you?

I don’t get in strangers’ faces about smoking though – pretty sure they know it’s bad for them – it’s their choice and it’s none of my business. Wish people wouldn’t throw their butts all over the place though…

  17. Bro Tim: It amazes me sometimes too, but it’s no bullshit, I really can smell a lit cigarette 2 blocks away… like I said, if the wind is right. Might be because smoking hasn’t killed all my senses. 🙂 Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
