Leave smokers alone.
Yes it’s about the stupidest thing you can do, but people can do what they want. This is a free country, so mind your own business. Only in Canada will people give you glares for smoking, in some places that’s a good way to get yourself killed.—Not stupid
This article appears in Apr 15-21, 2010.

In Canada and maybe in the US.
Well said though. I’m not a smoker, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s ridiculous, the way smokers are essentially being persecuted and taken advantage of.
I glare if I can smell you. Same way I would glare if I could smell your fart.
As long as cigarettes are legal, non-smokers should shut their puckered pieholes about smokers. Fuck, they’ve banned them just about everywhere and people still bitch about the smell OUTDOORS despite the fact traffic pollution is far worse on the lungs than a little second-hand smoke.
I wish to fuck some of these non-smokers could stir up as much venom for greasy, artery-clogging fast food as they do for cigarettes.
Seriously? A smoking bitch. Again? Yawn.
my dear not stupid, i couldn’t agree with you more. people need to stop this holier than thou fucking bullshit, and stick their noses up their ass. if i’m killing myself slowly, that’s my business. and puleaes don’t give me that second hand smoke shit either. when i am outside, even in a tiny breeze, amoke blows away, you know disapates. if it is a closed in area, that’;s aw whole nuther story. if i want to walk a street with a smoke, you are on same side, don’t give me a hassle. you want people to stop smoking, then make the governments stop collecting tax on them, and make smoking, and having them on you, a ddeath penalty offence. until you get that done, just fuck right off.
Every notice how often smokers will throw their butts out their car windows. They should be charged with littering.
Ever notice how often coffee drinkers will throw their Tim’s cups out their car windows. They should be charged with littering.
they should both be charged with littering.
the anti-smoker morons are getting out of control; i just got scolded for putting a well rinsed ashtray in the dishwasher at work cause of carcinogens wtf are you talking about you freak (i smoked for thirty years)
The only thing I hate is the butts all over the ground.. it’s gross. I especially hate having to sweep them all up.
If it was well rinsed why not either use it as is, or complete the wash by hand? An ashtray shouldn’t go in a dishwasher with other people’s dishes. You deserved the scolding. And yeah, anyone who throws shit on the ground should be charged with littering. Cigarette butts, coffee cups, etc.
I have an actual question for the smokers, no ill will intended at all.
Knowing what it does, why do you smoke? Most of my friends smoke and I dont judge anyone for what they chose to do, im just confused by this… They all cough, get short of breath, knowingly investing in their own death, complain once in a while they want to quit, and just dont…
I ask this question after recently watching my uncle die quite painfully from smoking related issues, and before you go on about how do you know it was smoke and not cars etc, even HE attributed it to his smoking…
An answer besides “I do what I want” would be more insightful…
People will always push the limits when it comes to well, just about everything. When it comes to smoking just like anything else there are some people who ruin it for everyone else. Who cares if you smoke? Not me. But be considerate when doing so – don’t blow smoke in peoples face, don’t throw your butts all over town, and don’t smoke in confined spaces with people – especially kids but that is a whole other matter.
I do most of my smoking at home, so nobody
can complain about me smoking on my own property. Or I smoke at the shop where
there are only three people who all smoke.
It’s a private shop, so nobody is there to complain about smoking.
I am rarely around anti-smokers, so I don’t
have to worry about them. But, they do
piss me off when I hear about them.
Anyone who litters should be charged regardless of what it is, those parking lot piles where people dump their ashtrays are gross though.
I understand the shop smoking. I know a couple of guy’s who are always smoking in their shop. It isn’t accessable to the public & I’m only allowed back there because of growing up together & being friends, they also smoke & when i mentioned to them maybe time to be thinking about quitting…they both looked at me & said at exactly the same time “We’re Welders More ! what could be harder on you than that ?”- I conceed they have a good point.
TTFN: Funny you should mention that! I have noticed that same thing about lit cigarette butts flying out of car windows…as I’m riding on my motorcycle behind one of these ignorant so-and-so’s ducking the little incendiary devices being tossed so casually and rudely my way! WTF!!! I don’t begrudge people the right to smoke but even if I was a smoker I would find this behaviour rude!
More: I’m not so sure about that good point. Aren’t your welder buddies adding to the abuse of their lungs by smoking as well as welding, which they admitted was providing a brutal demand on their lungs? Surely this increases the odds of a premature death. I know people who have died of smoking-related lung cancer and without exception every one of them wished, too late, that they’d never ever picked up that first cigarette. That the cigarette companies don’t care how many lives are sacrificed in the name of the mighty profit never occurred to them while they were addicted.
LOL @ jennier. Good point, though it is more than the bad smell that is offensive, it is the harmful chemicals included in that bad smell that a smoker is welcome to inflict upon themselves but selfish to include those not willing to undertake the risk. It is not a smoker’s fault per se. That blame lies with the cigarette companies who’s formula of added chemicals includes some to make the product more addictive than it would naturally be to ensure the money keeps rolling in. The sad part is all the lives lost in the process.
Scientists recently recognized a genetic marker to indicate which smokers will develop lung cancer from their habit. Not all smokers do develope lung cancer but if I was a smoker I’d want to know if this was in my future or if I’d be one of the lucky ones who can be lifelong smokers with no risk of lung cancer, although the risk for smoking-related strokes and heart attacks still exists.
The real question is whether the choice is worth the risk.
there are a lot quicker and messier ways to die. logic, i will try to answer your question here. it has been ingrained into some of us since way back when, that it was indeed cool to smoke. some chicks back then thought a guy hornier for some strange reason.as to the smoking itself, well we can all thank the governments, all of them, for keeping us going on the road to hell or death, whichever, is still wrong. they make it taste like something to get you hooked, look at the flavored shit out now, cherry, vanilla, strawberry, etc., more nails in the coffin. yes cigarettes are very addictive, give you that, and if gov. wants us to stop, then make the means available to all us us.the champs are about the best, but at 3.50 a pill, they are out of reach for a lot of people. we are sposed to have free health care, but this is not included, why, because of all the taxes gov. would lose by the smokers quiting. back to main point, we smoke, because like drug addicts and alkics, are addicted. and as long as big brother gets his taxes, we will still be. i have quit and tried to quit numerous times, and somehow or other, here i am again. smokers should not be shunned but tried to be understood, like a sex maniac, or other addict. some people play warcraft all day and night, no other life, do we shun themn, and casigate them every chance we get, no we do not. a smoker is really quite unable to break away forever, i know people who started up after 20 years or so, again. let us smoke, we try not to offend non smokers, but the nons are the most offensive of anyone, always making noise and trying to get get you to conform to their idealic standards, which if true, they would not pester or annoy smokers, think before you spout off, someone, someday, might just rip your face off for your snide opinions. i can see it happening very soon.
Logic, replace smoking with drinking alcohol, abusing drugs, jumping out of airplanes, jumping off a bridge tied to a bungee cord, etc, etc, etc.
bike riding in halifax…sorry couldn’t resist
Who the fuck still thinks this is a free country? You can’t fart without violating some stupid government regulation.
I just think that if you want to quit and you can’t is because you are weak. There are more than a few ways to do so, I chose cold turkey. I smoked for 20+ years and quit because of that phlemmy half cough and the persistent bumming of said smokes by any and everyone. I know I’ll take heat for this but if you really wanted to quit – you would and if you don’t – you won’t.
I saw a fat assed husband and wife duo smoking away in the front of their SUV today, as their preteen daughter sat in the back. Yeah, I glared. Fuck you.
Sorry but downtown gets smelly enough from the harbour, I shouldn’t have to hold my breath everywhere else just so I don’t have to breath in your horrible poisonous, aging, cancer causing fumes. The least you jerks could do is try to blow your smoke out at a downward angle and not in my general direction. Grr.
i’ll complain about smoking in your own house….. i have one of the only jobs left where i have to breathe in and get covered in other people’s filth. when someone comes to your house to do work, dont smoke on them, let that shit air out awhile, pop a window, change the air (i’m not a fan of humm either) people will follow me around their house, sucking back a fag, oblivious to the fact that – hey, normal people wouldnt take that kind of liberty. and as for “outside”, leaning on the sign that says no smoking within 5 meters of the entrance deserves the stank eye. i know that smoking is a symptom of mental illness and that smokers cant really help themselves, but i feel that their right to smoke should stop at my right to breathe air.
best no smoking sign ever-
if we see smoke, we will assume you are on fire and take appropriate action.
(the veiws and oppinions of this post are from a 3rd party computer borrower and are not nessesairily the veiws of virgomom)
Terry
My dad doesn’t smoke and has COPD. Know how he got it? Second hand smoke (work environment). And it isn’t pretty, I gotta say.
So I’ll glare at cancer stick suckers all I want, thanks very much.
Also, it’s obvious that a lot of smokers are illiterate given the fact that they seem to congregate under those “NO SMOKING” signs all over the place — specifically in certain bus terminals.
And if I have to sit beside/behind one more stanky smelling smoker on a bus, I’m going to dump a bottle of the cheapest, smelliest perfume on myself. Just to make a point.
And again….
http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=w9ySCcnoo3…
It’s a free world, society has achieved their directives upon banning of smoking in public, enclosed areas… Smoking outside, if I want to smoke, I will smoke… As much damage is done by other pollutants released into the air as smoke…
Regarding cancer, I am not disputing the fact that cigarettes increase the chances of being diagnosed with cancer… Ciagerettes however dont cause cancerous cells in the human body, cigarettes mearly accelerate the growth of already genetically modified cancerous cells that have been present since birth in the body. Ciagerettes are a stimulant to these already existing cells.
To the people who walk by a group of smokers with a hanky or hand covering their nose and mouth, your already sucking on tail pipes walking down the street and sit on your cell phones for hours at a time… It is interesting seeing an increase in brain tumours lately with a proven increase of cell phone use. People dont pick on these people though…
Remember, if you get cancer, your cells have already been programmed to what ever stimulant is the cause of the cancer..
whatever about cancer, what about the fact that it just plain stinks. if i was standing in the doorway of a building spraying offensive stink on people who walked by, i’d be arrested. its the same thing. i dont want people assuming i have a mental illness because i reek of your filthy habit. i dont want to return to my home and have to shower before i can hug my children. i dont want my appetite ruined or my sense of taste/smell hindered by your chemical assult. smokers are dirty. filthy-stank-rotten dirty.
people will quickly defend their “right” to smoke, but i guarantee i am more adamant about my right to enjoy this city without having my family assulted. thats why i make fun of you loudly and embarass you for smoking in posted non-smoking areas. asking a 7yr old to read the sign behind you and pointing out your lack of social grace not enough?? i’ve got others.
if you actually decided to smoke each ciggarette, it would be defensible from your position, but the fact is that your entire body chemistry has been altered and you are being controlled-consumed by an addiction stronger than heroin. thats what causes you to behave in irreprehensible ways, robbing others of their right to clean air with your vile addiction. you dont believe me? try not having one… you’ll either prove me right or change your oppinion.
Terry (still on vigomom’s pc)
i used to smoke, heavily, green death, players etc. then one morning my throat hurt, i coughed and a ball of congealed blood landed in the sink…not a small one, it was gross. That being said, when i did smoke, i never made it so anyone else was UNCOMFORTABLE. Here is how it should go, someone who is a non smoker, could politely ask “could you not smoke in the bus shelter” and the smoker say sure, ill go outside and downwind from you. and then everyone would be happy. at the same point, non smoker doesnt need to be uppity, confrontational and glare. smoker doesnt have to be a prick either. there everyone gets along, and no more smoke bitches RIGHT?
I didn’t use to have a problem with smokers until I saw these two middle schoolers riding their bikes and smoking cigarettes. One said “What if we get caught?” and the other guy said “Then we’ll get caught”. I don’t have a problem with adults smoking, but kids? I almost raged in their faces.
virgomom change stinky cigarettes to stinky perfumes and colognes, especially in an elevator. At least the smokers are outside or in their homes.
terry(virgomom), you choose nopt to smoke, i choose to smoke, end of story and stupid discustion. when you live in a glass house, you should not get pelted with rocks, but if you are the one throwing shit, it makes it okay then, right? let us die if we choose to from smoking, not being fucking nagged to death, from all you holier than thou non smokers. and if you are offended that easily by some small bit of smoke, then you must love the smell of stinky fucking farts and shit from harbour, and let’s not forget all the lovely deisel fuel fumes. give me a smoke anyday. and yes, your cheap perfumes and deoderants make me gag too. so, stop wearing all that shit when you stand next to me, and bitch about a little wind disapated smoke.
I would love to mind my own business but this being a free country and all, I should be free to stand at a bus stop without some stanky ass smoker next to me blowing all his/her fumes in my direction. I should be free to walk down the street without someone blowing smoke in my face.
Minding my own business would be easy if the majority of smokers had a little more respect for us non-smokers who don’t want to breathe that shit in or have that stench stuck to our clothes.
HA-DOU-KEN!
I cannot understand for the life of me where people who don’t smoke get their paranoid delusions and persecution complexes from. If anyone thinks you’re mentally ill, it’s because of the way you talk, not the way you smell!
I am not buying that smokers are singling you out and blowing smoke in your face and following you home and ruining your appetite and destroying your sense of taste and smell and making it impossible for you to be a loving parent without showering first. That shit sounds like a Sarah Palin speech. All that fear, egotism and anger is going to cause cancer, too, you know 🙂
How about if people who smoke have to pay for a portion of their hospital fees instead of relying on the health care? Would that help. I’d extend that policy to fat fuckers as well but that’d probably be asking for too much.
@ LIFE SUCKS – re: government not helping with quitting…
Actually, Addiction Prevention & Treatment Services of Capital Health offer stop-smoking programs in which participants are given FREE stop-smoking aids. Plus you get the added support from professionals. Call 424-2025 or go to cdha.nshealth.ca for more info.
Yeah Fandango, they’re totally following me home and waiting around the corner for me, holding in a big puff of smoke and just waiting for the right moment. Fuck off and get real!
I’m not paranoid, I’m speaking from experience. I didn’t even care that this one guy was smoking at the bus stop. That is, until I got home and the gf says “What the fuck is that smell? It reeks.” Turns out the guy was smoking some flavored shit and everything I was wearing stunk like it. Had to shower and wash everything and open the windows in the apartment to the get the smell out.
I don’t go out afraid of smokers, moron. I barely notice them for the most part but when I start coughing and holding my nose, it’s hard not to notice. Why should I be inconvenienced because of someone else’s disgusting habit?
Cranky I pay enough in taxes and my medical insurance, which I have very seldom used in my life to more than pay for any, if at all future medical costs.
cranky, where do you think this money comes from, for health services anyway? taxes on smokes old son. and any other thing that is/was classed as a sin tax.smokers pay for the nons, and all your sport injuries too. so in effect, you are enjoying the fruits of my smoking for free. yeah, i know, you pay taxes too, but most of yours goes to nice little things like the war machine. don’t even get me started on that.someone smoking at an outdoor outside bus stop, and you have to wash clothes, shower, etc. what a crock of shit that is. even if you stood next to a chain smoker, you would less than 1/100 of their smoke on you. your mind is playing tricks on you, or all you people that use this excuse, are just plain lying bullshitters. and add to the fact, that at any given minute outside, there is as mucjh as 2.5 million cubic feet of air that passes between you two people. so, non smokers, give it the fuck up, no one really wants to hear your fucking little whinibng shit anywhere. go suck a deisel tailpipe, and let me know how much tobacco you smell them. get fucked, please.
OceanLady, “The real question is whether the choice is worth the risk. “
The better question is whether or not it’s the government’s place to make the choice for you. I vote no no no.
East Indians smell like curry. Smokers smell like smoke. Get over it, human.
Bro Tim: I’d be more concerned about premature death than the medical costs incurred before that finality.
Crock of shit? lol, shall I invite you over to smell my clothes next time it happens? Oh yeah, I’m totally a lying bullshitter. I have SO MUCH to gain from lying about my clothes stinking courtesy of some old guy smoking at a bus stop.
I have to listen to smokers bitch about having to go outside in the rain, snow, whatever to light up so consider it a trade off, LS.
Cranky, the gov’t makes way more money then what they need to cover smokers health by taxing smokes. Why do you think the “smokeless” cigarettes, that have to potential of aiding a lot of people with quitting smoking, or just plain not smoking cigarettes any more, are banned in Canada.
http://www.smokelesscigarettesreviewed.com…
Oceanlady, I’d rather enjoy life the way I like to. There are many famous people who never drank or smoked that died young, especially athletes (remember James Fixx of “The Complete Book of Running”, died at 52 of a heart attack after a run), others lived to 100+ who did smoke (Bob Hope, George Burns, The Queen Mother). The point being is when your number is up it’s up. Don’t worry be happy.
Smoking is my choice… So fuck right off.
And if I have to pick between alzheimer’s disease or cancer; I’ll take the tumors
haha if i live to be eighty *mind snap* it will be opiates for me and more weed
Remember the good ole days, when there were smoking rooms in bars ?
Wasn’t it refreshing to be able to go have a drink socialize with friends etc. & not have to run a gauntlet of smokers standing under overhangs, doorways etc trying to keep dry.
Wasn’t it nice to be in a smoke free club, where smoking friends would be back after they had a quick puff .
I wonder who the genius’s were that came up with the idea to rid us of smoking rooms ????
One thing’s for sure now, you can’t tell at a glance anymore if people are outside smoking a cigarette or something else ~;)
Family pharmacare now covers wellbutrin for everyone (no exemption status) — wellbutrin is also marketed as zyban which is a smoking cessation drug.
Wellbutrin ALSO provides the most mind blowing orgasms on the plant.
What reason would one have NOT to try this drug? 😛
do they give free samples?
I’m addicted to being angry at smokers. So what if I do it, it doesn’t hurt anyone. It’s a free country. Cars fumes are worse than me getting mad at smokers. It’s my own choice. I could quit if I want to, but I don’t. I enjoy it, it makes me feel good, etc etc.
I’m not a smoker…I’ve never even tried it, actually so I really don’t have any input to what people get out of it but smokers get SOMETHING from it otherwise they wouldn’t do it.
I do have a couple of specific issues when it comes to smokers and these are for particular smokers so I’m not lumping everyone who smokes into one catagory.
My first beef is that my boss smokes and two of my co-workers do so while I get a 1/2 hour lunch they get 4 or 5 smoke breaks plus a 1/2 hour lunch. They usually go all at once so that leaves myself and maybe one other person there while they take extra breaks. I don’t think that’s fair and when I asked to have an extra break because I wanted to sit, drink tea and read for 10 minutes I was told that comes out of my 1/2 hour lunch.
The other problem is that I work in a clothing store and when the weather is bad they all smoke in our stock room which means our clothes that we sell, now smell like smoke. They also smoke in our break room so I can smell it on my jacket and when I’m eating. Picture 3 people smoking in a room the size of a small motel room…that’s what I have to eat with.
Finally, also when the weather is bad I have been standing in a bus shelter with people smoking inside the shelter…c’mon, either suck it up and smoke in the rain or hold off. Yesterday there were 5 of us shoulder to shoulder at the Mic Mac terminal and two people lit up a cigarette. A man asked them to stop and they quickly took about 5 or 6 more puffs each but when he left they lit the butts back up again.
I’m just glad my bus was on time
The minute I stop being annoyed at smokers is the minute they stop littering my city with their butts.
Does anyone hear the worlds smallest fiddle?
