I realize it’s a company sign from years ago, but whether we drank the tea or not, the sign has been part of Halifax for decades now. And it’s not even so much that there is change, but it was agreed upon to leave the sign, period. However, some firm from Toronto that is obviously unconcerned with anything but the homogenization of the western world, has just made the choice regardless. Based on that act of disrespect, what else is going on with that development that isn’t in plain sight? Shame on the city for working with these people in the first place. It should be local developers, supporting local workers and respecting their home town, who do major renovations to the face of the city. —Nuff Said

  1. Just ridiculous, I’m still torn up over the fact they changed the historic name of the building from Jerusalem Warehouse to Morse Tea. Now they want to change it from Morse Tea to just plain white. How dare they change what has already been changed from its original historic setting.

  2. I hear they plan on replacing it with another common sign, from the time-period.
    “NO DOGS, OR IRISH”

  3. gad, i am irish descent plus accompanied by dogs. i shall have to squat outside and snort peat or something.

  4. There was no “agreement” to keep the sign, it was a recomendation. The developer has also not said the sign was going, for all we know its a facelift. He’s done other historic work in the city without so much as a complaint. All that said now, I still stand behind my original statement of, how dare they change what has already been changed from its original historical setting.

  5. “…NO IRISH”

Would that be “Lace Curtain Irish” or “Bog Irish”?

Feckin’ hell! Sure, I woodn’t be darkenin’ der doorstep anyhoo. Never moind da tay, dat bloody rest’raunt never even heared tell of an ‘Irish 7 coerse meal’…. A 6 pack o’Guinness an’ a potato. Bad craic all arowoond!

  6. Who the fuck really cares?
Seriously… and if they do, WHY?
What fucking impact does it really have on your life to ‘not see a sign that you have seen for years’?

It’s an outdated sign for jebus sake.
These heritage assholes really need something more in their lives than to nit-pick and complain about petty shit like this. I didn’t hear much of an outcry when they put all that graffiti style shit for the farmer’s market on the walls of the keith’s brewery….

Seriously people, if you don’t want the city to change, then you’ll be forced to watch it crumble instead. It SUCKS here and you’re ruining any and every chance to make it just the littlest bit better.

I can’t see water from citadel hill…. WHAAA WHAAA.
Fenwick tower renovations are blocking one more foot from my view… WHAAA WHAAA
If we’re not building up… we’ll be building out.
Is that what you want for the city?
    Urban sprawl done ON PURPOSE?
    Idiots.
Edmonton is sprawling in every direction because they don’t have a harbor to stop them on one side… and ya know what? It takes forever to get anywhere there.
So I suppose Heritage Nova Scotia is basically pro-long commutes that irritate drivers and for helping the gas companies and their record profits.
    DEWSHBAGS, the lot of em.
Get those fucking sister building up and running FFS.

  7. WHat has really been pissing me off about that building for 50 years …. is the shitty brick facade on the top 2 floors added to that wonderful historice stone faced building ! Tear those 2 floors down I say. That will fix 2 problems,1-the fact the top of the building is new. 2- no top 2 floors now ther’s no place for a tea sign, ~;p

  8. Suppression, if it is deserved, will come rapidly enough from the same causes that suppress the unworthy members of a man’s family.

  9. What the…?

From painted-over sign to urban sprawl and record profits for the gas companies??

Was I snoring or anything?? I missed something when I evidently fell asleep.

  10. It’s lack of change… and yes, it will happen that quickly so don’t blink.
Things should just ‘be’ because they always were that way.
Halifax feels so god damn OLD.
Certainly not vibrant and buzzing…. more like geriatric and on a respirator.
How much longer before they just decide to pull the plug?

  11. Anyone remember those little porcelain figurines you used to get in the boxes of Red Rose tea? Some of those things are worth some money today. http://members.shaw.ca/mikesgeneralstore/r…

  12. Way to jump to conclusions. I haven’t heard yet what will happen to it. It could easily just being replaced due to it being in poor condition.

  13. avast, some dear soul has them for sale on kiwiwi all the time. and do you remember the ads for same product that featured talking chimpanzees?

  14. you’re slightly older than me and i didn’t remember but my magic hands will cook or research stuff

  15. Just a bit of Irish for you PG, John Millington Synge. 4th Year Irish Studies. I’ve paid off the student loan so I may as well use it.

  16. that’s part of the problem with halifax, no one wants something to go away or disappear. i think that it about time that the whole downtown core, be knocked down, and some new buildings be put up. if i was in a position to do that, halisux would look like a bomb levaled it in about a month.

  17. MM,GDM,Paingirl I remember those commercial’s too.Thanks for the reminder I used to like those commercial’s. 🙂

  18. I remember those little porcelain figurines. I collected about 25 of them of them, twenty of which were those hedgehogs.

  19. Did you see the Voice of the People today???
    http://thechronicleherald.ca/letters/15874…

3 voices against painting a sign.
    Fuck you.
Who the hell comes to Halifax to see a building’s sign?
If by ‘preserving heritage’ you mean promoting piss-poor road planning, shitty, tiny, decaying buildings for our downtown core hot spot, and stifling any major opportunity for growth and possible rejuvenation then you can take that ‘heritage’ and stuff it.
Good luck in 10 years when the only people in the city under 55 are the students dumb enough to come here. Then you’ll have all the heritage you’ll need with your fellow senior citizens and no where near enough government funding for healthcare since 80% of the population will be retired and drawing pensions. At this rate, Halifax is due to be the first Nursinghome city in Canada.

  20. Guess if it was in the way of SuperStorm Sandy they would have to worry about more then a painted over sign.. Silly waste of news

  21. Sorry, I just don’t get this bitch.

It is/was an attention getter, a gimmick that’s all. It certainly wasn’t anybody’s artistic masterpiece, or an integral part of Halifax’s unique heritage.

I suppose that you could always buy the wall, then everybody could get to appreciate it for all of time.

  22. AAAAAAAARGQFRGQWT I hate this “heritage” shit. Buildings and signs are not heritage when there’s no education to go with it! Why don’t these heritage fuckers actually do something useful like try to get the school curriculum changed to include more Halifax history or something? We barely touched it when I was in school, from what I can remember. I think I’ve learned more about our history from the internet than I did in the classroom. That’s how you PRESERVE history, you tell the stories, you don’t just leave things laying around for people to walk past for the millionth time.

  23. How about bitching about something worth bitching about like our mayor elect that pocketed $10,000 a month during the campaign. No wonder he didn’t want to open the books during the campaign. HRM, you traded one thieving idiot for another one.
