Will somebody in this city or province figure out how to build another road to Bedford and Sackville, besides magazine hill, maybe they could follow the new trail from Burnside. While they are at it, might want to start on that new bridge because after next year’s experiment no one will trust the MacDonald. The good thing is now of these projects would affect the view from Citadel Hill because we know how important that is. —JC

but ivan, by the time it got up to speed, it would be there already. the sucker is big, and would only have to go a couple hundred feet to be in bedford, yuk, yuk.
There has been an extension planned from Burnside to Lower Sackville for years but the environmentalists (as usual) have been blocking the building of the road. As for a third bridge, it’s not needed. Our traffic is not that bad. If you want to see real traffic go to places like Boston or New York.
What is going to happen with the MacDonald bridge next year???

The basin needs a ring road that is to the same standard as the highway from burnside to the airport. Then put an LRT down the middle of it…
.. And a utility corridor right next to it for electricity, water, and sewage, this could double as a greenspace for cycling trails, baseball diamonds, flood strategies, etc.
If it takes 100 years to build,and there is no money, the plan should still exist.

How about the businesses of Burnside working out some flex time for their employees? If you leave at 4:15 or 5:15 getting out towards the valley is slick. Everyone leaves at 4:30-5:00 causing a major jam. There’s also a lot of tractor trailers moving in and out of Burnside at all hours which causes tie-ups as well.
Yes Bro Tim, there’s a rare species of fern I believe that would be gravely affected by a certain route being built between Burnside and Lower Sackville. I see no reason to cause any extinction just to save people three minutes of driving time.

another visually lovely program on oasis last night. urban wildlife. usually oasis is better. came across as a chamber of commerce fluff piece about humans and animals living in harmony in new york city. and touted the marshlands by the airport as a sweet haven for birds.

just because there are 100 of those kinds of birds left on earth does not mean they will survive. they need a bigger gene pool. tiny pockets of greenspace surrounded by concrete does not allow species to cross over.
re a new road, it’s not just the road that will damage the area. the drivers on it will now have hourly opportunities to slaughter raccoons, porcupines and squirrels and hunting birds as they dive for the road kill. another road divides the greenspace yet again. what will be left after this road and then the next and the next? a 10 foot strip we humans generously allow the flora and fauna.
staggering work hours is excellent. i know employers get freaky about people working from home, they need solid monetary incentives to encourage it. tax breaks.

You seem to have underestimated the energy and resources required to transplant a whole species of plant. It’s not… 1) pull fern out of ground. 2) plant somewhere else. 3) Problem solved.
Really? So explain how all those pretty plants get from nature into flower shops and other stores. It is exactly that easy. Gardeners have been transplanting plants for thousand of years.

have you ever heard the term ‘hot house flower’ to describe something that cannot be removed from it’s environment?
They’ve been ‘domesticating’ plants for thousands of years, that’s why your everyday variety of plant is easy to seed/transplant/clone/etc. It’s a slow process, and one we’ve only had success with for the more hardy species of plants (we’ve actually manipulated plant genes to make it easier to use them). Troodon mentioned this was a rare fern, not your regular ol’ berry bush, so it could be incredibly reliant on certain soil conditions and terrain. Transplanting it could easily kill it. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s definitely not a simple linear process.
Heck, I’ve killed swaths of Tomatoes by transplanting them. And they’re a cake walk compared to planting some other common plants.
I am a gardener …about this so called rare plant ,sounds like a damn weed to me & not the good weed, if you get my drift .

You have it the wrong way around More. It’s the road that’s insignificant. We have thousands of miles of asphalt pathways around the globe and one species of fern. Which would have more intrinsic value?
The road. So exactly what is so special about this fern? Does it have some medical properties? Is it a crop that can be grown? Is it the only thing certain animals can eat, ala koalas and eucalyptus leaves? Just because something exists doesn’t mean there is a value there.
