So, Valentine’s Day has come and passed. Although I did not receive flowers, chocolate, or even a card, I do not feel like I have missed out on a day of romance with my fiancé. This is because I do not need a day appointed by the masses to force my fiancé to purchase me flowers that will die four days later, or a card that will be thrown out with the wilted flowers. There is no need to wait for one day to tell the person you love that you do indeed love them, every day is an opportunity to do so. If receiving “Dora The Explorer” valentines from classmates/coworker/parents/friends, on one day makes you feel special, then fill your boots, and mine too; because I know that each day I live I express my love for those around me, and I do not need to be told when to love by those in the marketing industry. —RL

while i agree with your statement in principle, your self-righteous tone makes me want to rub out my own eyes with cinnamon hearts.
What a Debbie Downer. How did you manage to type this, OP, seeing as you were so busy patting yourself on the back. I enjoy romance with my man all the time, but I sure did enjoy our special weekend together. The marketing industry didn’t “make” me do it, but it was a lovely excuse for something special.

I agree with OP, this is a lame over commercialized holiday just like all the other ones have turned into… what happened to time together without having to buy crap to show you love someone?
If you need to buy something for someone to show them you love them and only do this on one day because the calendar tells you to …. um I dunno, that seems like a waste to me. How about a flower and a card for NOTHING, on a random day… that means more in my opinion.
Is this a love…is this a bitch…I have no idea what this post is?
Boo, painey was caught stealing!!
I don’t regard my wife as being particularly high maintenance, but I’ve learned over a few decades of marriage that I should never trifle with organized efforts like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day (hey she’s not even My mother!) or similar observances.
I’m “in the dog house” enough just by being me. I don’t need additional reasons to be punished.
I think it’s just a soapbox for our self righteous OP, RC – it isn’t really a love or a bitch. Just a rant.
You’re a good hubby then, commandante.
You got nothing? nothing at all? not one sentiment from your fiance at all? No homemade heart strategically placed or terrible but sincere attempt at poetry? It doesn’t have to be commercial. Poor lil RL.
This is for you

Jesus Christ — if you’re NOT single on Valentines day you have no fucking right to bitch about it, lol.
That’s strictly reserved for the single. At least if we’re single, we can take some comfort in being able to bitch about all those barfy couples out there who are all “OMG WE’RE SO IN LOVEEEE.”
Stop stealing our thunder, OP. hahaha
Sorry OB, but your bitch sounds like you’ve munched on some sour grapes.
Look I can agree with the sentiment that Valentine’s day only exists to sell stuff and is kinda stupid. That’s fine. But personally I appreciate the break in the monotony of winter that is a fake holiday where you go through some motions and buy some candy that is technically the same as candy you get the rest of the year but with different packaging. People on both ends of the Valentine’s Day spectrum need to get over themselves and just enjoy an excuse to have a change in pace if they decide to celebrate it, and just not freak out over it if they don’t want to. Good for you that you have a great relationship with your fiance regardless of if you got anything or did anything for Valentine’s day or not, you don’t have to be so holier-than-thou about it!
Thanks Ralmn…hope you have fun tonight for Wednesday wine night. I think I may get a bottle of non-alcoholic champagne or something myself 🙂
Thanks RC! Yay Wine Wednesday! Going to see Hey Rosetta! tonight. I’m pretty stoked, even if all my friends seem to be busy, I’ll still celebrate solo. I’m good at that. 😀 I hope you can find something to drink that’s still delish, even without the alcohol!
It’s a sweet harmless little annual ritual for two people in love. When the marketing machine wants to include kids, sibs, parents etc on the hoopla, I draw the line. Valentine’s day is for lovers.
pineapple-banana-orange-strawberry-mango shake, RC…sunshine in a glass. great for winterblahs preggers
Sounds delish Kim. Thanks!
I just wanted ice myself. Buckets of ice I crunched like popcorn for months. But, at least I didn’t crave dirt = )
I’m with what Frenchie said.
OP,
someone should tell your BF all that…
he never needs to buy cards, flowers, chocolate… anything ever again!
simply because he loves you EVERY day and there’s never any reason to make any day more special than any other.
to you of course.. it might be a harder pitch for the masses….
them gals like thier bodyshop and chocolate treats…
ah yes, valiums time day, just when you think you are safe from idiots, they come out of hiding. did you miss the post deadline for monday o.p.? or did you just decide on your very own, to wait to post this bitch? doesn’t really matter, you are both lame. don’t like it that you didn’t get chocolates, or cards, or flowers, then stop being such a bitch next year. even charlie brown got something this year.
so, next year, be extra nice, and maybe, just maybe, someone will see the change from idiot to nice person. but i don’t see hell freezing over yet.
About dora the explorer cards, because nothing says love like a preteen latino… just me or is that wrong, i mean its ok to give to your children/nieces/nephews/generalknownyoungsters but if your over the age of 12 then it just disturbs me.
Bath and Body Works > Body Shop
FYI.
forget that… the whole premise is insane…
Santa forgot his present? off they go, not telling anyone they’re venturing out… in WINTER…. they hop a train (for which they have no ticket), climb on wales to cross a water that is clearly below freezing….
no wonder kids wander off and go missing all the fucking time.
Yuck, this is dripping with holier-than-thou!
Anglo, your post brought this to mind. (a tad sick)

I love bath & body works! Also…I told the bf not to get me flowers on Valentine’s day because they are over priced…but that I except them within the month…lol. I got flowers on Monday…smart man.
Buy three get three free this past weekend at B&BW. And I had a 20% off coupon. Three body washes and three matching body lotion for $30 including taxes ^_^
I smell right some pretty thing week! 🙂
Hey, OP, is it just that your man is a big ol’ fucking cheapskate and you’re trying to justify why he doesn’t give you shit on VD?
RC, two places for flowers at a reasonable cost. Costco, and the Flower Shop at the corner of Windsor & Almond.
Oooh hugo’s right — I think two dozen roses were $20 at costco this past weekend.
I love Costco. I buy myself flowers from there all the time…well I tell myself they’re a present from my 3 year old son…I ask him if he wants to buy mommy flowers and he says yup…and then I pay…lol.
I wish I knew about that BBW 3 for 3…. I’m jealous.
RC, one day your grown son’s SO will be thankful he got early childhood training on how to ‘treat’ the one he loves:)
They might still have it, RC! Doesn’t hurt to check 🙂 My FAVORITE is “secret wonderland” (I think that’s what it’s called) — it’s a sweet scent and soooo yummy!
I’m glad my people here at work aren’t scent nazis 🙂
OC – you just made me cry a little. I’m so hormonal. He’ll be 4 in 2 and half weeks and it went by so quick…but he’s really awesome…I’m just not ready for him to grow up too quick. He’s a real little gentleman too…frig…still crying.
PK – I just checked online – buy 3 get 2 free or buy 2 get one free. Still sweet deal! I go for the 5 for $15 hand soap…I just love that stuff!
Treasure every moment RC, they pass by too quick. Kids grow up in a heartbeat, or so it seems. I still get the occasional empty-nest pangs when I think about mine with their cute little smiling faces.
I still have my macaroni necklace from 14 years ago = )
ttfn, vd? sounds about right for some skanky little ho’s out there tho.
This Valentine’s was the best I’ve ever had – and we honestly just relaxed, ordered takeout and spent the evening together. Yeah, I bought him a card and some chocolates and yes, he bought me cinnamon hearts and a lovely rose… but honestly, it was a nice break from the everyday, and a good excuse to relax together for an evening instead of worrying about work, laundry, dishes, appointments etc. To each their own, but I don’t have a problem with Valentine’s day.
Hugo, i like it more because its a motivational poster.
It’s just another contrived “special day” for florists, Hallmark, jewellers and candymakers to pick your pocket. Some of us don’t need a “special day” to show our love to family and friends.
Why you sofucking bitter OP? It was soo fun to receive those dora cards from ppl.
If it makes both people in a relationship happy, then why shouldn’t they participate in the day? What makes OP look down her pointed little snout at everyone because they participate? Ya, if you’re a bitter old hag, or hate your life, or enjoy taking the fun out of special days (“there’s no Santa, you stupid twit!”), then honestly, I feel sad for you. Roooo. You lose.
