Where do I even begin? To a certain community college: You signed a paper with all the courses you would be offering this year and stated that I would have my diploma by the end of the summer. You then faxed this form off to the student loans office stating I’d have my diploma and will be taking full-time courses. All this so I could get my student loan. However, you fucking failed to mention that you wouldn’t be offering 2 of these courses at all until sometime NEXT FUCKING YEAR. Now you’re refusing to sign a letter stating you bullshit me and the student loans people, meaning that I will get PENALIZED BY THE STUDENT LOANS OFFICE. Not only have you fucked me over this way, but my plans to go to university in September to further my studies are now ruined because I can’t apply to start taking that program in January – It absolutely HAS to be in September (I know, because I called and asked). So now I’m stuck wondering what the Hell I am supposed to do. Do I waste an entire year for two fucking courses to get the diploma I’ve spent the last almost 2 years getting? Or, do I just go to university in September and then in the summer go back to your shit hole to get my diploma? Either way, I’m losing it seems.
You are the most poorly run school I have ever been to. You do not care about your students at all and it really shows time and time again. I can’t believe I gave you fuckers my money! I graduated high school in 2007. I don’t want to waste anymore time now that I’ve figured out what I want to do with my life. Pull your shit together. Realize what you’ve done wrong and DO SOMETHING to rectify it. For fuck’s sake… Even an apology would be appreciated. Assholes! —Stressed Out And Mad

The College reserves the right to modify or cancel any program, option, course, program objective, fee, timetable or campus location without notice or prejudice. It is also the College’s right to schedule classes any time, Monday through Saturday. Students should be aware that it may be necessary for them to take a course during the evening or on Saturday.
The College does not accept responsibility for any person, group or organization who may suffer loss or damage, or may be otherwise affected by changes as a result of suspension or termination of services, courses or classes caused by reason of strikes, lockouts, work stoppages, labour disagreements, slowdown, disputes, riots, bomb threats, weather, damage to College property, occupational health and safety concerns, or for any other cause.
Why would they “care”? It has nothing to do with their union contract or their pension.
They don’t care in the slightest, they got their money. Post Secondary education is about making money, not getting you an education
I took, what was thought of as an accredited course offered by nscc long long ago.
During our 2nd year something was said as an aside about the course not actually being accredited to the level of industry standard of ‘Technician’. Due to the hours of work and subject matter.
Had anyone of us known at the time that we weren’t actually be qualified ‘Technicians’ not one of us would have enrolled to the first year of the two year program.
this provinces college system is nothing but a buisness and has lied and misrepresented their course value in the past to get money and will likely do so in the future. as their disclaimer allows them to.
for all those who are looking to be educated by these scammers i would suggest to do a bit of homework to ensure you’re actually getting the education worth paying for or, if you’re getting a loan to attend this school, worth paying back.
Fuckin’ Scammers!
The College didn’t lie about the Captains education.
Never have I had trouble from the college. In fact, they made me one of the most employable people of my age in the city. Plus it was far more affordable than university, I had amazing teachers who really knew their subject matter, and they’ve always been open and honest with all their information.
Sonic had a good post. If you didn’t read the fine print, OB, then you can’t hold any other party accountable but yourself. If the course literature didn’t state that you’d be an accredited technician, why did you take the course? You didn’t assume anything, did you?
“this provinces college system is nothing but a business and has lied and misrepresented their course value in the past to get money and will likely do so in the future. as their disclaimer allows them to.” – I’d very much like to see some information to back this up.
The provinces colleges can’t be generalized into some money hoarding business only interested in itself. There can be no doubt that community college has benefited this province greatly. I know countless people who’ve gotten a trade and are in a stable career now, thanks to the college. And a great many of them would go back, including myself.
It’s places like the private collages (a ‘college from the east’ and ‘a successful college’ to name a few) that are the real scammers. When I worked at a university a few years ago in one of their departments, someone actually thought they could get their credits from ‘a successful college’ transfered to the university. And one poor bugger I knew from the cafeteria in the building I used to work at wasn’t told he couldn’t be a PCW because of a disability until he was almost done the program and the tuition cheque was cashed. They offered no refund. They said that he still got the education, just that he could never be licensed by the province and would never be hired anywhere. This college is now defunct.
I also constantly see PR jobs available for these colleges — like, the same position will come up every couple of months or so… which makes me wonder what’s so shitty and scammy about these places that they can’t keep people around to promote the place.
Also: NSCC went through a regeneration a few years ago under the guy who’s currently the president of Acadia.
He turned NSCC into a place where people who go there get jobs. Good jobs. And he was picked to be Acadia’s president based on that (because Acadia was in the shitter before he came along, much the same as NSCC when he came along).
Before there was seemingly some shame to going to NSCC because it ‘wasn’t university,’ but I know LOTS of people who have been to university going to NSCC to take programs there and have found jobs only because they went to NSCC.
I don’t think there was ever any shame to going to vocational school or community college — any education is valuable, but now NSCC seems to be the place to be. Especially when its focus is technical skills for the job market. University tends to focus on theoretical skills in most areas.
So there’s really no question about employability. The ONLY thing I can say though is those who have university credentials will almost always advance farther up the ladder than those with a community college education, and will usually be the ones holding the professional designations (engineers, architects, lawyers, CPRS designation, CHRP designation, which requires a university degree now).
“The ONLY thing I can say though is those who have university credentials will almost always advance farther up the ladder than those with a community college education” – Unfortunate, that is. The Captain will just have to do something about this.
I have nothing to say regarding any college besides NSCC. PK was right, it HAS gone through a major facelift in the past decade.
Well, you can’t be an engineer or architect unless you’ve gone to university, but iirc, you don’t need to go through a university programe to do what you’re doing, Captain — it’s a program you take at NSCC. I don’t even think there’s a university program to do it. So, I think your rise up the ranks probably doesn’t have competition in that respect. So you’re probably ok! lol.
And just as an anecdotal part to the puzzle — a family member went to NSCC about 15 years ago and now he’s running his own company and rollin’ in dough. More than I can say about myself and my two degrees and professional certification (all from universities). HA. I’m not making a ton of money, but I’m in the process of starting my own business, so hopefully one day I’ll be pulling in the cash like he is.
… though I went to university for more than just getting a job. I wouldn’t trade my arts degree for ANYTHING.
True Story, PK.
Obviously we won’t be getting Engineers or Architects out of colleges anytime soon. That being said, I’ve worked for several architects not much older than myself, and they’re not as bright as you might think. Apparently 6+ years in university doesn’t teach you a helluva lot.
“you don’t need to go through a university program to do what you’re doing” – Well, instead you should be saying you ‘can’t’ go through a university program to do what I’m doing, because a university can’t offer that level of training. Universities aren’t equipped to teach the way the college is. Which is why I graduated 4 years ahead of my university peers, and know considerably more than them in many aspects of the trade.
“I wouldn’t trade my arts degree for ANYTHING.” – And I wouldn’t trade my technical skills for anything. To each their own.
“I’ve worked for several architects not much older than myself, and they’re not as bright as you might think. Apparently 6+ years in university doesn’t teach you a helluva lot. “
Ohhh I feel ya on that. Just because you have a university degree or are in university doesn’t mean you’re necessarily smart!
“”I wouldn’t trade my arts degree for ANYTHING.” – And I wouldn’t trade my technical skills for anything. To each their own.”
I say that because I didn’t know my ass from my head when I graduated high school. I really needed that program to shape my brain. My second degree was more technical (professional business-like degree) and I really benefited from having that background. I honestly believe that 80% of those in arts degrees shouldn’t be there because they’re in it for the wrong reasons. Chances are you aren’t going to get a spectacular job with a BA alone!
