To the “owner” of the brew pub who kicked me out indefinitely for… ???
I visited a well-known South End establishment tonight for a couple of drinks and dinner. I’ve been a patron here for seven years and have experienced nothing but good service and good times. Tonight, I met up with a couple of friends for said good times. We sat at a table, had some drinks. Had some food. Ordered another drink and, half-way through, were told we had to move, the table was supposed to have been reserved but they’d neglected to throw up the sign. “Fine,” we’d said. “After our drink we’ll go.” And we did. Paid our bills. Thanked our waiter. Thought we were owed some sort of compensation, a free drink for helping them out, but didn’t push it. The owner followed us up the stairs and told us never to come back. What? Why? “For giving my waiter a hard time” A hard time? By leaving? Paying? Tipping 15 per cent? She followed us out and took our picture. I have been a loyal customer for seven years. I order food, drinks. Pay my bill. I have two degrees and a professional job, as does my friend. We accommodated their request; helped to fix their mistake. There was no reason to treat us this way. —Long memories, short sights
This article appears in Feb 3-9, 2011.

What do your degrees and job matter?
Anyway, hard to believe they’d treat a loyal patron that way, I imagine there’s a bit more to the story. But, I guess they don’t want your business so just take it elsewhere.
go the restaurant review section and you can name names
Holy fuck, I’d say I’m surprised but I’m not. I’ve been a customer of that place for twenty years (yes, since my 2nd year of university back in ’90 or ’91) and ever since that cow took that place over it’s turned into a shit joint. My friends and I stopped going about two years ago after the 2nd or 3rd round of shitty service. Fuck Honey Usher. The old people who live in the condos love it, let them keep her afloat.
See, I thought I knew which joint this is (followed him upstairs… was a good hint), but they say it’s a brew pub. They actually don’t brew anything on site, so I dunno now.
Anyway, the place I’m thinking of – I had terrible service there too lately. It’s unfortunate. the coziness is awesome, but the rest of it is a little meh.
I also love the coziness. That’s what makes it so hard to stay away.
the owner is either has mental issues or there is more to this story… who throws away money??
haha i have more education than you.
Seriously no one gives a shit about your education. That one, self-serving little tidbit makes me wonder quite seriously if there isn’t more to this story than you’re letting on. You sound entitled.
If this is seriously how it went down, make a complaint. Because what you’ve DESCRIBED is bullshit.
The sad thing is, it isn’t bullshit. If this was the only time I’ve heard about a complaint about this person/establishment I’d write it off as BS/sour grapes, but like I said, MULTIPLE second chances have been afforded this place by my friends and I(sometimes when I was there with them, other times when they went there without me and my partner).
She def has either mental issues or bad business sense.
drawing a blank. is this place made of stone?
Yes. Honey Usher is an anagram.
You’re so witty, Cranky! ha ha.
anagrams? good grief, that is my least favourite category
Ahh. My wife had a grad school gathering there and that idiot threw out half the patrons.
Whether the place has developed a bad reputation or not, you don’t get barred indefinitely for being polite, moving from a table when being asked and paying your bill before leaving. I’d say the drinks were plentiful and contributed to conveniently clouding your recollection of the events. Come back with the whole story…. normally I reserve the benefit of the doubt for any bitcher until I know the whole story… but it seems you’re trying to sour an already bad rap on an establishment by failing to include all details which would undoubtedly point some of the fault back to you. Just sayin’………….
I don’t think the whole story is too far off the truth in this situation. I watched this lady throw out about 10 separate people (they weren’t even at the same table). The upstairs was full, I was there with my wife for her school function. Mostly women, none of whom were drinking very much (this was about 9PM). She was like an umpire at one point with her “You’re OUTTA HERE” tirade.
She threw the first lady out for not having ID (fair enough – first friend was 24 but should have had her ID). She threw the second lady out for questioning (politely, mind you) why her friend was already allowed to drink downstairs having not been ID’d. She threw the third person out for questioning the second person. The fourth person she threw out she *overheard* talking about the situation across the room. I am not kidding.
As we were leaving (not thrown out but fed up with her bullying), she was throwing out an elderly couple that had nothing to do with the situation, they were just trying to go upstairs.
I was sober driver this night, and witnessed it from a fairly objective perspective. I’ve never seen anything like it.
The Op is saying that he was joking with the sever as they paid their bills about a free drink or compensation for being asked to move…..which I think most people would ask for some kind of compensation – If you’re a paying customer who is asked to give up your table for the servers mistake then you should be compensated. I think that’s why he got barred…because the manager overheard the conversation and took his jokes as harassment and probably is like Cranky said…a little mental.
& Isos_kram…..I don’t think he was throwing his education around like because he’s self entitled…I think he was just painting himself as a professional…not a punk who gets drunk on Tuesday nights.
I know “the customer is always right” service went out the window some time ago, and for the most part, I don’t think that’s a bad thing, but it’s progressed way to far the other way now. I’m constantly hearing about people being barred for life. Considering how many establishments fold up after a fairly short time, I’m surprised business owners feel so free to pick and choose who eat or drinks at their place. I know I have banned a few places myself, especially one of the popular dance clubs, because I don’t like how they run things (I can provide a fairly long list of ethnic people who are banned for life.)
There were a few occurrences that caused me to have a question mark, but one in particular settled any doubt I had:
My daughter and her ethnic friend went to the door, my daughter passed through no problem, but the bouncer stopped her friend and informed her she was banned. Surprised, the girl asked why. His reply was that she had been involved in a fight. She said she had never fought in the club. He said that she had been part of the group that had been fighting. She looked at my daughter standing on the other side, and then said, you mean the group that you just let in…she was the only one involved in a fight when I was here before. He kicked them both out then…which, if that is their (stupid) policy, he should have done in the first place.
At the other place, some time back, I was invited up into the VIP section…I didn’t even know there was such a thing…and curious, I followed the bouncer to the stairs. Before we could ascend them, he turned and told my friend she couldn’t come. WTF? I said, what do you mean, she can’t come? we are here together. He said, the VIP section is a reserved area and only those invited can enter it. Of course, I declined, but I told him to tell the person who had invited me that they were welcome to come down to the common area. No one showed, so I was inclined to believe that either he was looking for an easy mark or the establishment itself provided girls.
I can’t believe people still treat people this way.
Sometimes people who regularly patronize an establishment get a little too comfortable in their relationship with the proprietor and end up thinking that the normal requirements of the business don’t apply to them. They sorta feel like they ‘own’ the place.
Like moving to another table on occasion.
“Yeah we’ll move . . . after we finish out drinks.” ?!?!
This is an issue in my industry, too. Frequent flyers who have ‘super elite’ status enjoy a whole host of perks from the airline for being regular customers.
These perks are well-deserved considering what they spend on tickets.
But on occasion there are some few of these frequent fliers who seem to think that their status with the airline means that the ‘normal’ rules don’t apply to them. What these few don’t fully understand is that the rules the airline enforces apply to EVERYONE.
OP if the owner told you to never come back, then I think something has been left out of the story.
I caught heresy and sue = )
I kept it very general!
oh well, their loss then o.p. fuck them. if they want to do as you say they did, then maybe the next sucker in line will get your table.
i don’t get the picture that you are trying to paint, and i find it really hard, to think that’s exactly how it went. seems the more money, or intelligence one has, the greater the asshole potential. maybe i’m wrong, but somehow, something is not all in the open here.
maybe the waiter reads this column and would like to respond to said comment by the o.p. surely, there can’t be more than one person bounced and not easily recognized by him/her. hopefully, we will get the rest of the story today, or soon.
Haw Haw Trebek you Canadian ponce. I’ll take Henry’s Whores for $200

paingirl,
I need about a half dozen of those for my zombie apocalypse safe room.
Where can I get them?
I think it went down mostly like the OP said. I think it was all how the server interpreted it. The server told the people they had to move, the people said, “okay when we finish our drinks”. The server then told the owner or the owner asked the server what they said and why they weren’t moved right away and the server told the owner, “They said they would leave when they finish their drinks”. So maybe the owner took it the wrong way but still, this place sounds like BS.
Go to the food and drink page – search south end. It’s all alphabetical… fook
http://www.kgbss8.net/Cycles/Images/spetsn…
not sure mr. farmer, you could probably make your own. i just googled shit hitting the fan
I was there with a few friends a few weeks ago – main floor – 7 pm on a Friday… half empty. We were buying drinks (no one had more than 3 before we left) but I guess we were quite chatty. Even so – we weren’t abnormally loud. The other tables were filled with elderly couples that kept giving us the stink-eye… Won’t be back.
I feel like we’re not getting the whole story. “we’ll finish our drinks then we’ll go” … that sounds bloody annoying. “we’ll finish our drinks then we’ll go” Oh puh-lease. Get your asses up. Mistakes happen, you fool. Expecting a drink in return, ffs. Why should you be owed anything in that situation? UGHGHghg I hate people like you. They didn’t kick you out, they asked you to move.
holy crap, we were there on sunday. now i know why people were staring at our”loud” family…food good, service indifferent
The aim for any establishment should be to value it’s customers. I’ve been to many places where a mistake was made and through their own insistance accommodated my friends and I. The guests here sounds like they were ordered to move and not asked which would have been much more professional. No patron, unless they are being unsafe, disrespectful etc should be ordered to do anything. The manager regardless of the situation should have had the professional courtesy to make the request. That is just good hosting. If I was dumping my money into an experience and overpriced food and drink, it would be a priority of the host to ensure a good time and repeat business
Yeah, I think it comes down to one person being a bit of a head case.
It’s a bit of a shame. The food there is great (steak and kidney pie is tops).
Here’s a spin on that for you Tim.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fadCAHjN-s
I so hope someone from there sees this and shows it to Crabby Cakes. And I used to be such a good tipper….
I have more education than the OP also.
And, for the record, this didn’t happen. If it did it’d be on the news because the owner took a picture! Fuck I’m a genius.
I also find it difficult to believe that she ‘took a picture’, but who knows? I re-read the bitch and I THINK I figured it out. Dude, you only tipped 15%. duh.
I was the other friend that was there las night. I just want help clear some things up:
1) We go there only a few times a month, so probably wouldn’t be recognized as regulars.
2) Two of us were there at 3 in the afternoon after writing an exam, the third girl came after work around 4:30 – we all only had a few beer (I think I had 4 bottles of Coors Light) and dinners.
3) We were told while eating dinner that there was a large group coming – just to let us know – but not to worry, we wouldn’t have to move – they had reserved a few other tables instead.
4) when we ordered our last drink, the server told us that he did make a mistake and they DID need our table.
5) We told the group next to us that we were just finishing our beer, then leaving. They said not to worry because everyone was coming at different times. There was plenty of space for that group at this point.
6) We were kidding around with the server about the free beer, but thought we’d try because – hey why not (i’m a student!) Maybe he didn’t understand and that’s fair.
7) We asked him to ask the Owner – when he came back, he told us that he was on the verge of loosing his job for not reserving the table and for us asking for a beer (The Owner said we were leaving already so what was the point!) He wanted to buy us a drink out of his own pocket for the situation. We told him that was silly, of course we didn’t want him to do that! we couldn’t believe the Owner was making him feel so horrible – he was a mess!
8) On our way out, we wanted to walk by and give him some encouragement – we said “thank you for your service, you were great – sorry it had to end this way!”
9) That was the only part of the conversation that the Manager heard from us – I don’t know what the server had told her… Anyhow, as we were walking up the stairs she said “don’t ever come back, you’re not welcome here!” – we couldn’t believe it! We asked why and she told us that we had harassed the server and refused to move. We wanted to talk to the server as well and told her that he was nothing but nice to us – she said “yah, that’s because he wants his tip!” My friend was very calm and rational asking her to explain things to us. I was so angry that I called her a crazy bitch… (yes, I get that it’s wrong, but I was shaking with anger and almost in tears) As we were going out the door she called us to look back and as my friend did, she snapped a photo. She also yelled down the street for us to never come back and waited until we had turned the corner…
I am 32 and have been kicked out of bars before when I was younger – dancing on tables, being too drunk, etc. – we’re not claiming to be angels – but that is why this incident is so baffling – we really didn’t do anything other then ask for a free beer. The server was clearly afraid of the Owner. I’m not sure what he said about us to her – but if I were him, I probably would have said anything keep that dragon happy too!
Anyhow, I just read through some of your comments and thought I would clear some things up. It really was a strange occurrence and we just wanted to let people know. We are also writing a letter to the Better Business Bureau, but aren’t looking for anything other then a possible mark on her record.
i have never been downstairs so i can’t comment but the “shaking with anger and almost in tears” i get
LOL @ Cranky! That was a good one 😀
I have a feeling I know what place this is, too… just guessing by the “upstairs” comment alone. I went there only a couple Sundays ago and my server was pleasant. I didn’t notice any manager or anything, but I wasn’t really looking for one I guess.
Anyway, I had only been there once prior and the service was so terrible. :-/ Like. Ridiculously terrible. We understood that it was busy, for sure. But at the beginning of the meal, my friend had mentioned to the server how she had wanted something from the menu to go, but just wanted it closer to the end of the meal (so it didn’t get too cold) — she was going to drop it off to her boyfriend for supper. So, whatever. All throughout the meal, the woman took forever to come to us, took forever to get us our drinks, didn’t smile or anything at us, and then at the end, when my friend mentioned the food she had ordered, her response was, “Oh, yeah, it’s kinda busy… like, someone’s in there waiting 15 minutes for a poutine.” Totally understood that it was busy, but considering my friend had brought it up when we ordered… >_> Anyway, I just remember not being very happy with our server at all and I think, for the first time ever, I didn’t tip… and that means a lot because I always believe in tipping. :-/
Dude….
insulting Dragons… not cool!
unless it’s spyro. that little douche doesn’t deserve the title
Ah man, I thought I could top it but I’m not so sure now…anyway, this is just one(1) example, I have about 2 or 3 other experiences but this is the one that guaranteed that I would never go back or suggest anybody else do so…
We were a group of 6 (3 couples) enjoying meals and drinks (not excessively). I won’t go into details about occupations or education levels to avoid any clutter. One of the couples left early and paid their bill with Visa (or debit, not sure, but they used the machine). At the end of the night our remaining group of 4 paid up and at that time were given the bill for our friends who had already left. We reminded the server that they had already paid. Our server said that they had not and left it to us to pay. We thought it really weird that our friends would leave without paying, but seeing as how we lost sight of them after they left the table we could only assume that somehow they forgot. They are really nice people and it seemed out of character, and its not like we wouldn’t be seeing them soon. Anyway…the server just stuck their guns and we had to pay their portion of the bill, no attempt was made to confirm if they had/had not paid. We paid the bill and included the gratuity because for all we knew they were telling the truth.
We get home and call our friends to find out what happened. It turns out that they did pay and went online to their bank statement and proved it to themselves. They e-mailed us a copy of the bank statement which we printed off. We drove back into town the next day (a sunday) and asked to speak to the manager. After explaining the situation to the cow she huffed and went to her office leaving us standing there like her poor cousins who were looking for a handout. Her waitstaff standing around kind of smirked and then realized, hey, maybe I should offer them a coffee. We declined. Based on the owners attitude towards us (I can’t give specifics on this as it was awhile ago, I am just left with the bad taste now) we just wanted to get our friend’s portion refunded to us and get out of there. After about 15 minutes she came back, told us that sometimes the computer didn’t work properly, gave us our money back, asked us if that was all, and walked away.
The cool thing is my friend tipped generously. Hope the server appreciated it.
Okay, we TOTALLY have to hold the Bitcher’s Summit there. The ol’ hag ain’t seen nothin’ like the likes of PG, LS, TTFN, Ivan, Jonnoman and TBR doing the Time Warp the first time she tries to bounce someone for breathin’. Of course, I’ve never seen it either– I’d like to.
And why hasn’t anyone pulled out a smartphone (or even one of average IQ) and gotten her on video? Looks like it would be great fun for YouTube… and perhaps for the real owners to see– maybe at the Hank’s Domicile’s Xmas bash.
I’m in. I’ll bring the lawn darts.
I second that motion Rosie. Soon, can we, can we, huh huh?
But we can’t start shit until after we have ordered, and had a few drinks.
That way, when we get kicked out, HH wil lose out on a large tab 🙂
Who gets to flip the table over as we leave?
someone who has never been arrested…i would volunteer but ya know………
O.K., O.K., I’ll do it for ya, Painey.
Jesus likes to flip over tables…oh, no…on second thought, I’m pretty sure he’s been arrested before.
thanks ttfn, i don’t want to be re-located again. damn you wpp
Okay good! NOW we have a plan moo hoo bwahahahahahaaaaaa!
Thanks for the clarification OP! After reading your detailed accounts and the support of others in the claims that this owner bitch is a mad man, I am pleased to say I am fully on board. Just hearing about her attitude is enough to make me want to never enter this establishment again.
ON THE OTHER HAND… having been invoked by Rosie I am without a doubt obliged to join “The Committee” in checking this place out, and more specifically, this old bitch. Should she decide to manifest any irrational behavior toward myself or any of the crew even Montrealman’s socratic ramblings will seem like The Cat In The Hat. Of course, we will go in with EVERY intention of being well-behaved…. *cough, cough*
Just to sum up:
1. Server accuses paying customer of dining and dashing.
2. Patrons have to return to business for a refund.
3. No apology for double billing.
4. No apology for inconvenience.
Note: at no time did customer ask for restitution to correct for any of the above issues, and none were offered.
Failure of command which tends in most cases to permeate all levels of service. I’m surprised the comments on the quality of the food are so generally positive. If this is how she treats the customers and the waiters, what must it be like in the kitchen?
I’ve heard that most of their food comes out of a box or can so they don’t really need to keep staff. Probably a pretty unhealthy turn-around.
There’s a regional publisher that was actually infamous for it’s high turnover and toxic environment. There is even a group of former employees who still get together annually to retell horror stories and pick up new ones gleaned through the grapevine. I know of one incident where a friend of a staffer actually took a week’s vacation from his real job, applied for and rec’d a position just to see if the stories were true. He quit in 3 days.
Well then, we’ll be doing this for the sheer entertainment value of the staff… if not for ourselves… so that when they are finally let out of the funny farm they can go to a nicer place and re-tell about the time the lady with the double d danced on a table and some Russian bloke threw peas in the twats eyes while singing ‘Coming Thru the Rye’ in Spanish… at least I hope that happens…
Crany. All the food is made in house. I worked there a few years back. I know the owners…the situations you describe…but don’t attack the food. No cans, all fresh, mostly local (except that which can’t be).
So has anyone ever screamed back at this old trout?
If we have the Bitcher’s Summit there, it’s a dead-bang cert. Don’t know about Coming Through the Rye Rosie, but after a couple of pints of lunatic broth I’ll be on table-top singing 7 Drunken Nights in my best brogue (including the two banned verses – Heh Heh) >; ) Whale Oil Beef Hooked, Indeed!
Thanks for correcting me, the food is good so I was a little surprised when I heard that. Maybe they were talking about somewhere else or maybe it is since you worked there. In any case, I can only attest to what I know so I won’t rag on the kitchen. Front of the house staff/management is fair game, though.
Thing is, I can prepare good food at home and there are other places that serve good food without the attitude. People eat out for reasons other than being too lazy to cook, I think this place doesn’t realize that.
What place is this?
you’re kidding right?
I was leaving our favorite pub with my daughter and son when these “customers” were leaving as well, or being asked to leave. I find it hard to believe that the story is as it is being reported when these women were calling someone a “fu*king cu*t”
Thank you for using that language in front of children. I’m glad you were asked not to return. I look forward to returning there and not having to experience walking past someone like you.
It takes away from the validity of your story when you behave like a spoiled 13 year old who just learned a new swear word.
My story is 100% true though. Don’t worry, you’ll have your story to tell soon enough.
5 will get you 10 that first time poster “Zack Attack” is an employee of said establishment. Ha ha. Nice try.
It would never occur to you that I had to create an account in order to add to the thread? I wonder “Cranky” if you might think the whole world is against you? But I’m glad I did create an account because now I also can air my opinions. I’m sorry you feel attacked, everything is not always about you I’m afraid.
I don’t make it a habit of responding to people on LTWWB, but, what the fuck are you talking about? Please show this post and all of the responses to the manager/owner lady. Please!
That sounds like a great deal. I will print out this thread and take it in, and you keep yourself and your mouth to yourself.
Sorry, but I can’t resist chiming in when hearing about such douchebaggery in the foodservice industry, especially when I myself have been at the receiving end of it.
I’m thinking that no matter how well behaved I had been up to that point, by the time the camera made it’s appearrance I’d have said “Sod the High Road”, let the expletives fly and felt bad about the collateral damage well after the fact. You’re welcome to attend the Bitcher’s Summit Zack, but you may want to leave the weans back in the bothie. It’s gonna get a little blue.
When is said event? I HAVE to me there… with my video camera…
We’re goin’ viral. It’s gonna be tight, y’all

Ref: Jonnoman (Feb. 10, 2:20PM)
Ever on the alert for instances of my name being taken in vain, I happened upon Jonnoman’s reference to “this old bitch” at the restaurant:
“Should she decide to manifest any irrational behavior toward myself or any of the crew even Montrealman’s socratic (sic) ramblings will seem like The Cat in the Hat.”
I applauded Jonnoman’s reference to Socrates and Montrealman in the same breath as well as his criticism of the bitch’s “irrational behavior” – clearly he is coming along nicely – but I’m weak on “The Cat in the Hat.” Is there any philosophical seam that might be mined here? Does the Cat invoke other, more incisive pre-Platonic philosophers?
Thank you for your understanding and your assistance

Hey, mm made another joke, cool.
check out ‘Philosophers’ Playground’ there mm.
http://www.teachingchildrenphilosophy.org/…
…or just google Dr. Seuss.
You recommended Cat in the Hat Philosophy for Children to MM, Hugo?
Now that’s funny = )
Hello from Montreal!
Sometime back Paingirl made reference to “Wallace and Gromit” but I dismissed it as little more than an instance of her juvenalia. However, I have recently finished reading – light, leisure reading of course – Alec Guineness’ autobiography “My Name Escapes Me`(1996) and, guess what, he makes reference to an English TV program featuring Wallace and Gromit! Now Guinness was a reflective person. What would he have seen in Wallace and Gromit? Do they embody any particular philosophical viewpoint? Paingirl, I’m counting on you for enlightenment!
Hugo Phurst makes reference to Dr. Seuss – I assmue that the Cat in the Hat is a Seuss creation – but, wouldn’t you know it, I’m weak on Seuss as well! However, the bit on Philosophy for Children (which, by the way is big in university Education Departments) raises some traditional philosophical questions, primarily the word-world (language-reality) relation as well as the problem of “other minds.” For my views on these questions, see my reflections on “realism” and “constructivism” on another thread whose name, I must admit, escapes me. (Another joke there!) But what was Seuss’ views about these matters? Was he a realist or a constructivist?
Yes, Wittgenstein gave up on the question of the word-world relationship, famously claiming that “Philosophy leaves everything as it is.” Clearly, Wittgenstein was a constructivist but the position is open serious critique. How, one might ask, did Wittgenstein know this? In fact, to have made the assertion at all Wittgenstein must himself have transcended language! From his elevated but unannounced perspective he must have viewed the world on the one hand and language on the other, and asserted that there existed no relation between the two. Was Wittgenstein guilty of a performative contradiction here, claiming a knowledge of that which was precluded by his very principles? I believe he was. One must never claim a knowledge of that which one’s principles preclude. Philosophically, this is the kiss of death.
All reflections on this question (and any other) will, of course, be keenly awaited and warmly received.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
Dr.Seuss to Montrealman:
“I’m afraid that sometimes you’ll play lonely games too. Games you can’t win ’cause you’ll play against you.”
“So the writer who breeds more words than he needs, is making a chore for the reader who reads.”
“A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
On paingirl:
“In my world, everyone’s a pony and they all eat rainbows and poop butterflies!”

Well folks we now know the cause of MM’s problems. No Dr Suess as a child or Grommet & Wallace, probably no Bugs Bunny eith. Poor guy, deprived of childhood.
Tim, annie’s childhood experience does seem to be rather lacking doesn’t it?
No Dr.Seuss, no Wallace & Gromit???!!! I call bullshit, I think Annie is lying.
Why would he lie about something like that? Just like the other personality deficiencies that he’s exhibited, I blame it on his NPD.
So, what traumatic childhood experience has led to his denial? Ridicule by an authority figure? Did nanny say the Dr. Suess was for babies?
A domineering nanny would certainly explain his spanking fetish.
Lol, Annie, I double-dog dare you to take this test, and honestly tell us the results.

Hehehe, like that will happen;)
Hey Zack, did you show it to your boss, yet?
