There are some very good local bands who entertain in the city’s pubs at the weekend. When then week after week, month after month and year after year does every band play the same catalogue of songs?. I am sick to death of hearing “Brown Eyed Girl” Sweet Home Alabama” and I hate “Sweet Caroline”, someone please tell me what is, and where does this sick obsession with this particular Neil Diamond song come from?. There are plenty of classic favorites to choose from please…

  1. They’re easy to play and easy to listen to, but please. I can only listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd so many times before I want to smash someone over the head with a guitar. I hear ya.

  2. What I get a kick out of is the people who really don’t seem bothered by hearing the same songs over and over again for eternity.

  3. Thank fuck for the both of you…it’s becoming difficult to go out in this city…I had “Wish you were here” ruined for me forever one night at the lower deck, needless to say I haven’t been back since.

SO GOOD SO GOOD SO GOOD!!

  4. Most people are too drunk to notice, and if they play those, drunk people are happier since they can be assured of singing along instead of staring blandly at the stage with a look of confused frustration.

  5. Haha, well you hit the nail on the head there SwampDonkey.

And Anton you must laugh everyday then, at all the people who listen to the radio haha.

  6. I despise those fucking moldy oldies but I think Swamp Donkey got it right – most people are too pickled to care – as long as they know the melody and half the words, they can drunkenly caterwaul along.

I love the new bands – we old fucks had our day – it’s time to pass the spliff – er, torch to the new talent out there. I hate how Boomers think they defined fucking music.

If I ever hear ‘Brown-Eyed Girl’ one more fucking time, I swear I’ll puncture my eardrums with a ski pole.

  7. This post is funny because I am currently getting an acoustic duo together and we are trying to strictly play songs that are not normally heard in local pubs. When is the last time you heard Zeppelin or Blind Melon at a pub? When is the last time you haven’t heard celtic music of some kind? We don’t want to do that crap. The only thing that concerns me, is whether or not any of the pub owners will have the guts to hire us.

  8. Time to check out new cover bands, says I. I recently saw Nerd Army (they cover videogame themes) for the first time ever and had a great time. There’s few experiences that rival drunkenly howling along to the theme from Legend of Zelda.

  9. Dino’s right: those songs are easy to play. Any idiot can play those songs and sound like they at least somewhat have musical talent/can actually play an instrument.

  10. Thank you for this, it is so true. We need better local talent that plays some more original tunes.
