Why does the price of all the good beer keep going up? Staropramen, Czechvar Sneiderweiss, etc etc. are through the fuckin roof!!! Is it because all the University students jumped on the bandwagon and think its cool to be holding big foreign cans/bottles of beer as it makes them look like alcoholics with a ounce of class? Has the Nova Scotia Liquor commission realized this sad trend and capitalized on it?
Or does it actually cost more money to ship beer over to Halifax now that oil prices are going up?
I heard, (urban myth?) that beer actually comes into our port, gets shipped to Ontario and then gets trucked back to Nova Scotia….Can this be true?…It cant be, can it? Dang.
This article appears in Feb 21-27, 2008.

I’m not sure about whether or not the beer gets trucked back here from Ontario but due to unfavourable weather across North America and Europe there’s a shortage of hops. Between this and the increased global consumption of beer, the remaining hops, and thus beer, has gone up in price. Hopefully this year will be a good hops growing year or else the price will remain high.
Nah, its floats right by us down the St.Lawrence Seaway. THEN it gets trucked back to us. Do what I did in my uni days (back when imports were few and far between), brew your own. Or maybe you prefer the labels too?Or switch to wine, rum, vodka, or scotch?
The reason ALL beer is going up in price is there is an acute HOPS shortage, caused by a inflated rise in ethanol production. Oh and students have been retards about imported beer and how it makes you look cool (it actually only makes you look like a pretentious loser) for decades and is not some new trend.
Speaking of looks, I love those that drink martinis for the looks, hence the price of a martini is fucking $10, it’s all a fucking shot of alcohol, and probably cheap vodka too! Yes, beer has gone up only because everything else is going up. Beer hasn’t gone up in prince in Europe, South America, Middle East, Asia or Australia, only in, guess where, NORTH AMERICA!!!.. YAAAAY. By the way, Oil is being sold at $30 a barrel outside of North America! and there’s 100 year’s worth of supply at least! $35 max in the middle east. You can fill up an SUV there for $20. Not to mention, no taxes. Guess where i’ll be going when i finish school!!! There are actually good jobs there that pay you $3000-$4000 a month tax free.
Actually it has gone up elsewhere…Germany’s government even discussed protective measures. The hops shortage is not North American…it is worldwide. The whole reason I heard about it in the first place was because of an article pointing a little fun at Germany for taking important government time up to discuss how they could protect the price of beer.Martini’s are generally supposed to be 3 shots…I think that is why they cost so much (not saying there aren’t 1 shot martini’s being served, just that they should have the full 3 shots as is called for)You are correct though about the inflated price of gas here in NA, it seems funny that in Saudi Arabia where production is quite high they don’t rip off their citizens like they do here in Canada, where we also are a major oil producer now…shouldn’t we have a more stable industry here because of the oil sands? It all seems funny to me, we should just stop exporting it and make it entirely domestic…
Funny point about the Import beer and pretentious drinkers….especially since the beer that gets imported here is hardly the best beer the origin country has to offer…they are like blue, bud or canadian…cheap college beer for guzzling. And Christopher, I’m not sure how accurate this is, but I think we export oil because we can sell it for more money than we import it for. Selling it to ourselves might save the consumers money, but would cut into the producers’ profits. Plus, I am sure NAFTA probably has some rules forcing us to sell our oil. I think the same principle applies to other import/export situations. What I really can’t get my head around is why gas prices are so high and oil companies are making record profits. WTF? How do they justify that? Glad I don’t have a car these days or I’d be more pissed off.
Chris, I haven’t heard much about crops across the ocean, but i’ll take your word for it. To me it seemed like everyone in NA is getting on the band wagon and raising their prices for no reason. Miles, to answer your question, if the Canadian public stood as one, Canada wouldn’t be in the position it’s in. Look at Cuba and Venezuela. They’re hated by the US because they refuse to be part of this whole NAFTA. I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with Cuba. In fact, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with any government in the world as long as it doesn’t make decision to directly affect it’s citizens. In the US, if you don’t have health insurance, they’ll call you a cab and pay for the cab to dump you a few blocks away and will not treat you. In Cuba, if you’re sick and don’t have money, they’ll treat you and they’ll forget about it. In fact, if you take a cab to the hospital in London, they actually refund you whatever you paid for the cab. Germany and Cuba and what used to be Iraq, all offer free University education to their citizens. All those countries have no taxes what so ever, well with the exception of Britain. I was in Kuwait and Dubai over the summer and it Costs my dad $20 to fill his 4 Door Mitsubishi SUV, 6 Cyl. Over there, 4 Cyl. are hard to come by. I worked in AB for 5 months, and from what i heard, not sure how true it is, Canada has one of the largest oil reserves with the discovery of the oil sands in AB. Yet we provide the most expensive oil products. Canadians should just stop buying Gas for a day or a week and let the corps feel the pain of the canadian public. I’ll give you this story once. Insurance companies in Kuwait were going to raise the prices like insurance companies here do, for no reason. Most of the citizens cancelled their insurance and decided to drive without. The government stepped in and advised Insurance companies to lower the prices back to their original prices. Whatever companies refused were thrown out the country, their licenses revoked for business theft. There’s something called business theft there. A company can be charged for over pricing product to take advantage of the public. Almost everything is regulated. The last time i was there before last summer was 16 years ago, and i kid you not, little has changed when it came to prices of anything.
One more thing, regarding prices of things overseas. In Kuwait you can get a brand new Honda accord for $16,000. I saw it with my own eyes. Big poster advertising it at a Honda dealership. Yours, Cash, Tax free. none of the additional rip off fees you get when buying a car here. Air Excise tax, what the fuck is that? Tire tax, what kind of scheme is that?
I agree coyotex that NAFTA is shit deal for everyone. What did we expect to happen when you partner with US mexico and Canada? Who did we think was going to win out on that deal? I like the EU experiment a lot better. At least those countries are on fairly even economic footing with each other so there is no dominant country. And they are socially minded enough to force government to actually govern how companies will do business. here in NA its business that dictates government policy. And your point about the canadian public is also very well received. I agree completly. Canada has no leader, no national vision and no unity politically. We gotta get our political house in order if we want to exert our independence from the US and the rest of the world. I don’t want to sound negative or anything either, I really believe in this country, I just think it has been a long time since we had a real leader with a truly national vision.
Yep we do get the smelly end of the poop stick that is certain. NAFTA should be scrapped and we should be allowed to govern our own economy as we see fit. I love how the US was allowed to keep 1 billion dollars of the duties it ILLEGALLY collected from the softwood lumber dispute. An international court of law agreed that they had taken the money illegally so how is it they can still keep some of it? It’s like robbing a bank and when you are caught and jailed you get to keep half of your “loot”; makes no sense what so ever.
