I cannot believe that the Labour Standards Board of Halifax is as slack as they are. You’re absolutely no help to anyone. By the time you cut through all of the red tape and get close to a resolution, you people take a month off, or switch workers on me. Thanks for letting a big prick salon owner with absolutely no business sense take full advantage of me. Thanks to you, salon owners can pay a poor hairdresser 50 percent commission, and apparently even though you’ve worked 80 hours in two weeks scrubbing their shitty salon, it’s okay to give these stylists pay cheques in the range of $130. I was used as a slave for four months and don’t want this to be allowed! What’s wrong with you people and society anyway? Wonder how much you gov’t workers make for doing NOTHING! —Used and Abused

you read crappy stories about them from time to time, most people are afraid to say much tho, for fear of losing a benifit or something. and if you didn’t have some unions, then you might be making peon wages here.
oh, and government workers, make a fantastic pay, for fdoing sweet fuck all. maybe some people should think of running foor a political office, to get things changed, or just to start the ball rolling.
OP — hmmm wonder what salon THIS is. *eyeroll*
There are better salons out there who will pay you a salary instead of commission, OP, so find yourself something better! 🙂
The labour board *is* useless. You know what ELSE is useless? Service Canada.
Hmmm, you work for an employer and the salary/bonus/benefits come as a surprise FOUR months later?
Was there a negotiation as to the size of the commission they would take? Now, I know we are not talking high-end here but is there not an hourly rate plus commission factored into this equation? I dunno how it works but it seems to me that for 80 hours work it should be at least 1300 buckers after taxes……..so, I guess I really have no clue what the person who cuts my hair and trims my nutz really earns so am glad I am a fantastic tipper 🙁
Work out your pay contract before you start working. Not after. Time to cut your losses. Get out and move on.
Spread the word on that place.
where is this place located? I have an idea but would like to know….
You should have been out there bustin ass to get clients.
Many hair bending places, along with food service joints are often still a horror show as far as labour protection, or lack of, is concerned. Government just really does not give a damn about workers in these areas.
The OP probably only got a $130 after working 80 hours because some places charge rent. You pay the rent and then get to keep the excess I think. I’m not sure what rents are or how it works but I know my hairdresser doesn’t usually want to hire new people because she knows they won’t be able to make enough to pay the rent and still have a good chunk of money left over because of their lack of clients.
You have to pay for your chair and if OP was being paid on commission only I don’t think they’re required to pay you min wage.
I dunno… something’s fishy here.
Depends on the salon actually. One of the larger chains in the HRM uses a commission system which does not require a stylist to rent their chair. They get a good commission but only after they make a certain net profit… if they don’t reach their “goal” then they end up with a very poor hourly wage. It rarely works out in the stylists favor. It is really hard on new stylists who don’t have an established clientele because they have to rely on management/ receptionists to book them clients and most clients want a more advanced stylist.
OP, why not get a job elsewhere and forgot about the place?
I think I know the salon owner you speak of and if so you went through hell. He has taken advantage of many before you and is a dick. Totally leave you can do way better!!Open your own!!There’s a woman on a street nearby who styles hair out of her house and makes a total killing!!You can do so much better than making money for a jackass who treats you like dirt!! Be your own person and stick it to them!!
If you have a legitimate complaint, don’t let it get drowned out by the hundred if not thousands of other complaints or greivances that you have for the employer.
Your dispute and grievance when talking to the labour board needs to be clear and coherent. If so, you’ll get your day in court or you’ll get the satisfaction that you are looking for, whatever that may be.
Where you deprived of a right that your employer had a legal obligation to honor? If so, focus on that, and STFU about everything else. Just my 2 cents
