For all of the health care workers who feel the need to clog up the clean air by smoking near the sidewalks outside the hospitals, get your head examined. Do you have any idea how repulsive it is to walk down the street and be engulfed by disgusting cigarette smoke by you- the very people who see the damage of second hand smoke EVERY DAY. I don’t care how stressful your jobs are or how hard it is to quit. I’m doing my part to stay healthy by walking to work instead of driving. Do me a favour and show the same courtesy. Butt out or find a spot where you’re not killing me. —Share the Air God Dammit

  1. Smoking is a choice, it doesn’t matter if you are a DR or a cashier, we all know the damage it does, just be happy you don’t smoke and go on your merry way.

I don’t smoke by the way. And as long as someone isn’t doing it inside around me I don’t care.

  2. I don’t care who smokes and who doesn’t (well, I”d be sad if anyone in my family smoked because that shit kills, everyone else? Go ahead and kill yourselves), but I have to say I’m really sick and tired of having to go through clouds of smoke to: a) get to my apartment (fuck you smokey and the bandit on the first floor), b) get to a bus and c) get into any public building.

Smoking is fucking INSANE around here. I saw MAYBE three smokers during my trip to Toronto, and NO ONE smokes at bus stops/transit stations.

I don’t give two shits who smokes, like I said, but I’m convinced the vast majority of smokers out there are inconsiderate assholes.

    PS: y’all stink.

  3. I agree PK… if I could go a day without having to deal with cigarette smoke I probably wouldn’t hate smokers so much.

  4. Smoking isn’t a choice,to the degree people think it is. Most people who started smoking were 15-16 and that is intentional on the part of the advertising committees as that is when children are most vulnerable and unable to foresee the consequences of there actions that will eventually end up killing them. The whole point of the cigarette is addiction. it doesnt taste good, smell good, have any health or social benifits, it is a thing that if you get tricked into doing once when your young you will continue to do it for a long time. Im in my early 20’s and have been smoking for about 6-7? years and have tried to quit … at least 10 times. It sucks being a smoker more then it sucks walking by one in the street. And I only imagine that being a health care worker and a smoker must drive them crazy and nothing they haven’t thought of before. Ive even thought of it as Ive walked past them and seen them, and I am a smoker, unfortunately.
The problem isnt with smokers its with the governments allowing the most deadly(world wide) and addictive of all drugs to be sold to us and kill us and piss people off, just to make a profit. Cigarettes suck, quitting is hard, so fucking hard, I like your anger but i think it is directed towards the wrong people.

  5. *awesome* someone else blaming others for their rotten decisions!

Life is hard sometimes, dragonflytamer, and sometimes we all have to do shit we really don’t want to do. No one’s to blame for anyone’s smoking addiction but themselves.

Typical addict talk, right there, my friend.

  6. Read John Allan Car’s easy way to quit smoking. These facts do not come from me about cigarette companies advertising tactics. I am not blaming society for the fact i smoke .. and I quote myself here, ” Smoking is not a choice, to the degree people think it is”. Im saying society is set up to encourage young kids to smoke when they are at the most impressionable age, and that is appalling and needs to be publicly noticed and stopped. However, people’s hate is being directed toward smokers and that is never going to solve the problem. The problem is then on each individual and an impossible problem to solve considering how many millions of people are addicted to smoking. Millions of smokers die every year. That is millions of customers the tabacco industry is losing every year. Thats the catch 22 of selling a deadly product, how do you keep profits up when it kills all of your customers? Prey on the impressionable, because adults are not going to just pick up smoking once they have the capacity to realize the full implications of what smoking is. Children do not.
Typical addict talk is saying you enjoy smoking, because when you think about it it makes no sense to enjoy something completely disgusting/deadly/expensive/stinky/socially unacceptable/etc , that is the addiction talking. What I have said is not that.
I suggest you read a few articles and educate yourself on a topic before making an ass of yourself online again, fear entwined with regret kitty.

  7. Lololol the only ass is you. I fail to see how “society is set up to encourage young kids to smoke”. They aren’t even allowed to buy cigarettes and if they get caught doing it on school property, they are punished. Not to mention the tons of anti-smoking ads, they have them ON THE PACKS OF CIGARETTES, websites, TV, radio, in schools, etc. Every kid in elementary school has to go through the DARE program. The side effects and results of smoking are not kept secret so please elaborate on how it’s not your fault that you smoke. I do not smoke, never have. Why is that, if everything around is supposedly telling me to smoke? Because I CHOOSE not to. Please, do not jump on the “addiction is a disease” bandwagon. When you can start legitimately calling in sick and collect benefits because you’re addicted to something, then I’ll agree that it’s a disease. There are a ton of articles on that too.

  8. Like I said, this battle isnt going to be won if we fight individuals. Your ignorance is astounding. You are right, there are lots of articles on addicts and their rights. You cannot fire an alcholic who is on a bad streak given he seeks treatment and i fucking bet ya they call in sick and are on disability for liver problems, etc. And smokers too for a slew of other countless health problems. ADDICTION IS A SOCIAL DISEASE. read up . read lots. the world needs it.

  9. just fuck off o.p., you are an idiot if you think you and your scum will change more shit. you got away with a lot of crap years ago. but no more, too much is way too fucking much. go suck a lungful of deisel exhaust.

  10. and by the way o.p., two of them, constitute a majority, and we all know, a majority rules. so again, go fuck off.

  11. People like who two who have a strong opinion never seem to be able to give a good reason as to why you have it. I have a reason, you two have resorted to jr. high tactics of trying to win an argument.
I was once told you need to change your opinions if they are solely based on emotion and not based on reality and facts. when there is good reason to think one thing over another, it is stupid to remain thinking the other way. Such a simple and obvious thing, right? Nope, a lot of people like you guys talk without thinking, without good reason to back up your opinions, even after being shown good reasons another thing is more logical to accept as an opinion. Not only will you live a more enlightened life if you base your opinions this way, you learn a lot more when your open to that way of thinking, and you don’t end up arguing without any premise as you now are.

  12. I was once told that if you hold an opinion you should know the reasoning you have behind holding that opinion. If there is no good reason, or there are better , non-emotional,factual logical, or just plain common sense reasons to hold a beilef other than the one you have, it is stupid to remain with an inferrior opinion in your belief system. If you never think about things, and argue with no premises other inferrior beliefs will be premises for others, corrupting your whole belief system.
It seems like such an obvious thing to base opinions on reality, the option with the best/most premises should take place of the older opinion which you may hold for reasons you cant even explain, or from emotion. But nope, not simple, there are so many people like you guys who argue without supporting your argument and resort to telling people to “fuck off” because you don’t like what you hear and don’t want to open your minds and make informed opinions. It’s sad, frustrating, and it makes for poor conversation and a shittier world than one that is possible if only people would be more rational about what they think and more conscious of what they say/do/act. If people behaved based on this – seemingly- obvious train of thought the world would be so much better off, hopefully someday humans will evolve to that naturally.
I ‘m done with our conversation on the matter. Sorry if I have offended you for whichever reason I will never understand.

  13. OP, I agree. There’s nothing worse than a health care worker who smells like an ashtray. Heck, the nurses’ union probably says smoking is okay for their members and might even encourage smoking as a punch in the face to the health care system.

  14. Fuck off OP. I work at a hospital, and we are no longer provided an area to smoke out of the eyes of the public. Your socialist government decided to make all hospital grounds smoke free places. So guess where we have to go? Out on to the sidewalk, on display for all the tobacco nazis of the world. Give me a dirty look and I’ll shove my burning Malboro 100 right up your tight motherfucking ass.

  15. dragonflytamer, to which truth are you referring to. the real truth, or the government truth, or maybe even the anti smoking truth.believe it don’t. they are all different in context and even contradict one another in quite a few areas. yeah, i smoke, and don’t want any big fucking brother type looking over my shoulder and lambasting me, for something that you can avoid. by going about 10 feet away. it has been said time and again, if you don’t like the smell, stay the fuck away, or someday, someone just might rip you a new face, for getting in their’s.

  16. There’s an episode of Bullshit about second had smoke, you should watch it OP. And that’s all it will take for you to realize that you’re being an asshole. Seriously watch it.

  17. I’ve given you many reasons why I believe what I do. Just because you don’t agree with them doesn’t mean they’re not reasons. Just because I don’t agree with you, doesn’t mean I have a closed mind, it means WE DISAGREE. I’ve heard tons about how people, like doctors and physiologists, etc believe that addiction is a disease. I’ve also heard a lot from different medical professionals about how it isn’t a disease. Just google “addiction is not a disease” and then “addiction is disease”. You get a lot for both. I also base my view on the people I know that smoke. My father smoked way back in the day and then quit while my brother and I were young and then chose to start again when we were old enough to know enough about it to make our own CHOICES about it. Blaming the government, society and non-smokers for your choice to smoke just doesn’t sit right with me and there isn’t much you can do to change my mind and I’m sure vice-versa.

  18. Melectric- an addiction is a disease, and it’s really ignorant of you to go on about it being the person’s own fault. You seem awfully judgemental, but act like you’re not at all.

BUT, in saying that, if you chose to start smoking later in life, you’re not all that bright. But, as kids, the peer pressure can get to someone to start smoking, and then it can be hard to quit, no matter how many times you try.

I don’t smoke, but I have smoked randomly in the past. dragonflytamer, nicotine is not something someone generally gets addicted to after just one puff, and it’s not the most addictive drug. But, I can see your point about kids starting smoking young, and having a very hard time trying to quit.

Mel, good for you for being able to avoid peer pressure and never smoke, that’s something to be proud of, but for a lot of kids, the pressure to fit in makes it harder to say no. I’m not saying that it’s fair to put the blame all on someone else, but as a child, you don’t necessarily have the mindset to be able to make decisions based on good judgement.

Toeachhisown- Bullshit is a phenomenal show.

  19. Thank you. I think these people should be fired. They clearly are not health care professionals, otherwise they would be spreading disease throughout the community. I tried to walk to work but had to pass the hospital. i was tired of feeling sick after I walked past and disgusted by these people, I stopped. And actually, I did not feel compelled to change my route to accommodate people who have NO BUSINESS working in a hospital. I wonder how many cancer patients have to contend with nurses and doctors reeking of cigarette smoke. I think it’s a human rights violation.

  20. Come for a walk by my hospital OP – I’ll violate your human rights in more ways than one.

  21. I definitely think addiction shares some characteristics of diseases, including the fact that some people will use them as an excuse to do whatever the hell the want.

  22. i95, does that go for sexaholics too? if so, i’m gonna be so there. doing whatever i want, and no excuses to be made. that is almost like giving a robber your money, even tho they only wanted your ipod.

  23. Addiction is a social disease…. AHHAHA

Addiction is about choice. Whether you’re 16 or 60. By your logic, dragonflytamer, everyone who’s ever been 16 (i.e.: all of us over the age of 16) should be smokers addicted to smoking.

There are plenty of people who faced the same situations as these ‘addicts’ and OH HAY didn’t end up addicted to whatever.

Like I said — typical addict talk: nothing’s my fault! It’s society’s fault!

Take some fucking personal responsibility. I have an addictive personality — I was born with one, and I have managed to avoid becoming addicted to drugs, smoking, alcohol, gambling, etc (the main ones we hear about as examples). But if I did, I certainly wouldn’t be blaming anyone else like some narcissistic addict-fuck.

I really would have a lot more sympathy for addicts if they didn’t pull this “it’s not my fault!” attitude constantly.

  24. “I definitely think addiction shares some characteristics of diseases, including the fact that some people will use them as an excuse to do whatever the hell the want.”

There’s no doubt that addiction is a disease, but it’s a disease that one chooses. You can’t be addicted to something you don’t ‘try,’ and you have to try smoking before you can become addicted. And no, people don’t get addicted after just one puff like PF mentioned. You have to TRY it a hell of a lot more than once to get addicted.

In any event addiction being a disease doesn’t mean it’s anyone else’s fault but your own if there’s blame to place (and addicts seem to be quite eager to place blame). I mean I don’t go around blaming whomever I got the virus from when I was little that likely caused my diabetes. No, I just suck it up and deal with the reality of the situation.

I doubt any of the addicts out there would be very sympathetic towards a fat person who ends up with type two diabetes who goes on blaming fast food companies for ‘making them’ eat their food and ‘causing’ their diabetes, now would they?

    Didn’t think so.

Both arguments are ridiculous and A LOT more personal responsibility needs to go on around here.

  25. It’s likely that random viruses can cause type one diabetes. It triggers an autoimmune response in the body and since my immune system destroyed my beta cells in my pancreas that produce insulin, I ended up with wilfred brimley syndrome. 🙁

That’s one of the newest theories which apparently has some definite weight behind it.

I was always getting viral infections when I was little so it really doesn’t surprise me. My cousin and I used to come up with creative names for them when I’d catch them.

My dad had hepatitis when he was a kid and his has been attributed to that.

And just on topic: my dad has a very addictive personality and always says he stays away from things like gambling and alcohol because he knows all too well that he could become addicted. He smoked for 30 years and quit about 22 years ago and not once have I ever heard him attribute his former addiction to anyone but himself and says all the time that if he had another cigarette he’d likely be addicted again so he stays away because oh hay he takes some actual responsibility for himself and his actions.

  26. I’M SO CLOSE MINDED AND JUDGEMENTAL, MEL, THAT I JUDGE YOU FOR YOUR ASSERTION BECAUSE I REFUSE TO LOOK AT YOUR POINT OF VIEW.

  27. OP thinks if there were no smokers the air would be clean…..guess all that car exhaust is good for ya too. People are so fucking brainwashed about smokers….its fucking pathetic….its a public place OP, cross the street and breathe the clean car emissions smoke free!!!

Your a SHEEP, wake the fuck up!

  28. Just leaving your front door there are many dangers in this world. I’m so sorry Dexter and the pinko co-alition haven’t made this world safe enough for you yet OP – maybe you should just stay inside so you aren’t exposed to all of the evils and dangers of the world we live in, lol

  29. Woah, woah, woah. Easy now, ladies. Let’s settle this the old-fashioned way: jello wrestling. 😛
