Wait, what? Didn’t it close back in ’06?
who gives a fuck
great news. now let’s tear it down and build a nice building that riff raff won’t hang out.
i just fuck’n love people who bemoan the loss of a business or venue or whatever and jump on the bandwagon but meanwhile they rarely or never patronized the joint;shit i have people saying how much they miss my restaurant 2 years after it closed who i saw like once in it
On behalf of Halifax, wtf is the Khyber Club? lol
Ohh no! Now all the cool trendy pretentious NSCAD Joel Plaskett-wannabe Halifax hipsters will have to find somewhere else to hang out with their dark rimmed glasses, fruity scarves, tight jeans, and cool retro shirts. All while reading The Coast, of course.
That’s too bad….Maybe Stephen Harper can help….Doesn’t he like the ARTS!!!!
You know an awful lot about these fruity scarf wearers there feller. Did they stop inviting you to their parties and now you have a sad? Ohh, poor kitty.
It’s been dead for years basically, which is too bad and kind of upsetting. If your only response is to address that “fruity scarf wearing” pretentious hipsters will now have to hang out somewhere else (while somewhat true) then you’re completely missing the point of what this space was capable of. Somehow that doesn’t surprise me though.
E.Glass: yes, you are indeed correct.
In fact, here is a picture of me sitting outside of the Khyber Club after being rejected by the dark-rimmed glasses and fruity scarf-wearing Halifax hipsters:

My Sweater wasn’t retro enough so they wouldn’t let me in (one of them even accused me of getting it from The Gap), all while sipping on some fair trade Just Us! coffee and reading The Coast while listening to Joel Plaskett and talking about the next cool show at Gus’s, of course.
Huh, that’s odd because I believe I was wearing Gap sweater that night and drinking a MacDonald’s coffee and they let me in. (Double reverse irony was in at the time.)
Perhaps it wasn’t your attire and lacking accouterments, perhaps the boot was prompted by their quivering fear of your mighty pen that scribes such scathing burns with unadulterated eloquence in the comment section on thecoast.ca. Their reputation was at stake, dearest Qpmzwonxeibcruv, can you really blame them?

What, again?
Double reverse irony? Accouterments? Scribes? Unadultered? Sharks? Whoa man, way over my head! We don’t all have English Degrees from King’s and can’t all use fancy words or photos to elevate our arguments. Besides, that’s one big shark!
Come on E.Glass, you know they were judging you. Don’t act like you don’t know the types I’m talking about, Halifax’s well-established anti-establishmentarians. The “independent thinking individuals” who all look, act, and think the same. But hey, that’s their thing.
Nah, you’re right. Tear the sucka down!
(Though I would like to claim the shark argument as my own, regretfully I cannot. I do feel that really got to the crux of the issue. There are far to many shark in scarves in this city.)
Q-Man, you ever need a tail-gunner(no sniggering please), you know which cranky old reactionary, hippy-hater to call. Just Ixnay on the Ingskay Nglisheay degree stuff. I may be a long winded insensitive bastard, but it doesn’t mean I don’t have feelings. >; )
While I am usually the first to lambaste Halifax pseudo-hipsters (pseudo because they aren’t even hip enough to properly be bestowed with the asshole title), I am sad about this.
Hipsters or no hipsters, they are all part of this tattered fabric of a “Halifax scene” that make it what it is, with Khyber no less being one of the few art spaces we had around here. I hated the kids at CD Plus but I’m pretty devastated at it shutting down. It’s about the bigger picture guys. RIP Barrington. Talk about ghost street.
scenesters need to be seen or they are irrelevent; so they will find a new home to be cooler than hollywood:)
I also thought this decrepit house-turned-hipster-venue closed a while ago.
board the fucker up so it matches the rest of barrington st.
Let the NSCAD types decorate a big wrecking ball artsy-style and then knock this eyesore down with it.
Every time I hear the words “Art Space” or “Scene” I reach for my…gun? Well, not exactly, I reach for my Skoal, turn on Nascar and pop in a Toby Keith CD. I don’t actually like any of these things but really, when you’ve seen one exhibition of paper-mache vulvae, or Guernica-like murals with AMERIKA SUX finger-painted in the artiste’s own dookie you’ve seen them all. Nyet?
I may never have darkened this establishment’s doors but that was because I didn’t give a toss. You never saw me outside protesting with an ill-written placard saying “Fund War, Not Pretentious, Narcissistic, Juvenile Temper Tantrums”. And if we ever get back to having decent Airshows at Shearwater, I’ll expect the same courtesy in return. Because we all know just how much the educated, progressive, hipster Left respect diversity, Right?
On the other hand is is truly dispiriting to see another Barrington establishment go tits-up. But tell me OP, how is that the fault of the HRM or the suit-wearing bourgeois drones who can hardly be faulted for ignoring something that was never meant for them anyway?
Enjoy your new “space” if you find one. You could always take up boxing. I hear there’s a gym on Gottingen.

It’s just a song, but I find it rather appropriate for this thread.
wow, all you guys are so out of touch it’s laughable.
Fuck the hipsters! tear it down and build a college douche bar with a sweet wing nite!
btw hipsters don’t listen to joel plaskett. go back to bumfuck ontario with your cliched whitebread attempt at snarkiness.
ATTN Hali: Ae you even from halifax?
I work across from the Khyber, and in all of my years here, I never knew what the building was up until a few months ago. It didn’t really seem like something that was ever open to the public, nor did it appear as if they were trying to get people beyond themselves and their friends to attend whatever it is that they do in there.
The Khyber has a chalkboard they put outside for every show, estimatedwarbear. Just like almost every other pub in the area does when they have live bands. If you took the time to pay attention to your surroundings, perhaps you wouldn’t have to make such sweeping, generalized accusations.
Also, what the fuck to just about everyone else. I know it’s awesome to put your finger on a specific group of people and make fun of them, but hardly anybody in the music scene anymore claims to be an “individualist”. Just as I’m sure you all belong to some stereotype. Only the people in the music scene seem to be more accepting of other people and their tastes. We hang out together because we have one thing in common: music. And that’s clearly something subjective. You can judge somebody without knowing them all you want, and you can even do it anonymously on the internet, but it makes you look like a fucking angry and pathetic human being.
Thanks, Beats. I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘full-on hipster’ but I know some and they are some of the nicest people I’ve met in Halifax. You guys can sit back and judge because people dress in tight pants, or perhaps have different tastes than you but you enjoy hating on this group of people because it is easy. Because they don’t care, and are mature enough not to sink to your level. That’s my ‘King’s English Degree Having – Just Us Coffee Drinking – Coast Reading’ way of saying ‘Grow the fuck up’. Start enjoying things about your own life and stop generalizing/hating a group of people you literally know NOTHING about.
“”wow, all you guys are so out of touch it’s laughable.”‘
You’re goddam right about that, son!
But some of us ole folks ARE trying to “get down” and “dig that crazzzzy jazz” (How’s that?)…so we can understand this new and shocking thing called “youth culture” – perhaps you can help?
“Hipsters” are people that “dress in tight pants”? I’m confused, I thought those were circus acrobats….
And what’s wrong with Joel Plaskett? I read a list in NOW magazine of the top ten bands from Halifax, and 7 of them were Joel Plaskett…I thought you crazy kids “dug” the Plaskett?
I guess I’m just not getting it, although I do like white bread, maybe that’s it? Would more whole wheat help? My doctor DOES say my cholesteral is up a bit….? Anyway.
Maybe next time you and your friends in this music “scene” get together to play your records, take some pics, so’s we can see how much fun yer havin’!?
I thought hipsters were pants, worn at the crack of ones ass?!
those are hip huggers
