I am so disgusted with pretty much everybody’s response to this recent tragedy in Paris. The ONLY appropriate sentiment or statement to make at this time is one of condolence and solidarity with the victims and their loved ones. I don’t want to hear you spin this to push your political or personal narrative, WHETHER THAT FALLS ON THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE POLITICAL SPECTRUM. You think you’re making a difference? Go join the army, run for office, research the issue and decide for yourself what you can do to help the situation. Before fucking blood had dried in Paris my feed was flooded with a few people spewing bigoted, anti-islamic, xenophobic fear or hatred. But I think it’s just as bad to immediately start lamenting that this tragedy shouldn’t be used as a reason to promote islamophobia or whatever your personal or political cause is. It’s in extremely poor taste EITHER WAY. We should just offer our condolences and keep our fucking mouths shut. Let the political leaders do their jobs. As someone who has friends living in Paris and other parts of France, it saddens and sickens me to see the loss of life, the destruction of families, the senseless slaughter of innocent people IMMEDIATELY used as a talking point to further a political narrative or view—again—REGARDLESS of what that view might be. It’s just not the time or the place. I think I’m done with social media. People fucking suck. —TJ902

Ummmmm…
My cat farted last night! Several times… the oddest thing, eh? After 13 years, I’ve only heard it last night. Does anyone else have farty cats?
People DO suck. Social media is IS a fetid soulsucking morass where people can say things they would never have the guts to utter in public.
And it’s not a phobia when they really are trying to kill you.
I’m with the B*tcher and Dr. Zaius. So many people on social media do suck. After the Paris attacks, I couldn’t bear to go near FB or Twitter for days because of the callous, nasty anti-Muslim sentiment. It reminds me of the screaming mobs during the French revolution, shrieking for more blood and never having enough.
Guess what, you can unfollow people on social media. If you don’t want to hear people discussing current issues than I suggest you do that. Changing the colours of your profile picture and saying your thoughts are with whatever mostly white country has the most recent tragedy is fucking useless.
Keep taking your “high road”. The rest of us will have the important conversations.
Well this is Canada and at one time we had freedom of expression until the PC police showed up and started accusing people of being mean and are trying to put a stop to opinions contrary to theirs.
The PC police are alive and well and moderating this forum. If your opinion differs from the mod’s, you will be crushed like a Ferrero Roche under a backhoe.
Did anyone hear that faint whining?

Bad Comments
• Bad comments insult the writer of the post, other commenters, other websites, etc.
• Bad comments are often long, and contain threats, needless swearing or abusive content.
• Bad comments go off on tangents or go-off topic, and often contain spam or spam-like content
• Bad comments are almost always anonymous, and usually contain fake contact information, because negative commenters are almost always too cowardly to stand behind their opinions.
Its quite simple to follow the rules of The Coast. Unfortunately for far too many past commenters who I can only assume are adults, couldn’t. Its that simple. Seriously, it really is that simple. On top of that this is a private website moderated at the discretion of Team Coast. With that said you have no expectation of free speech on a privately owned website. This place was unregulated for many years and a lot of people did suffer real life consequences because of the lack of moderation.
If one of the main tenets of journalism is free speech, then why does The Coast not adhere to it?
Further, almost every response to a Bitch insults the writer of the post, other commenters, other websites, etc; they are often long, and contain threats, needless swearing or abusive content; they often go off on tangents or go-off topic, and often contain spam or spam-like content; and, are almost always anonymous, and usually contain fake contact information, because negative commenters are almost always too cowardly to stand behind their opinions. I reference those commenters with fake names like Nukka, Bro Tim, Spiggy, Ghost Jesus…
You’re absolutely correct Ghost Jesus, except for one point. None of us commenters are journalists printing our own newspapers. On top of that even journalists have their hands tied by publishers at times. They still have free speech, however claiming free speech entitles you to do and say what you want on a privately owned website is ridiculous. Can I go to the Chronicle Herald and demand they publish my opinion because of free speech? On that note I comment on their website all the time (under my real name) and they’ve always kept it clean, but in the back of my mind I know its their website and anything I say may or may not be approved by their moderation team.
It all comes down to the fact that we are all commenting on a private website and with that we accept their terms of use. I agree there have been instances where I feel the Mod seemed extremely heavy handed yet as commenters on a privately owned website we have to accept that. Its their website, their terms of use, their comment policy and most importantly, their discretion.
My cat burps.

Give me examples of people who were victimized on this board. And how it poured over into their real life. That’s all news to me and I know many of the old regulars. Why did this not make the local news? Or did Global cover this in a lead story? It’s possible that I could have missed both.
Well, we could start with the guy you were harping on earlier. I did notice the Mod deleted that comment pretty quickly though, lol. I know what ended his reputation and it was a stupid joke that he truly regretted and tried many, many times to make amends for. Is that a good start or are we going to take the childish “two wrongs make a right” approach? And now years later people like yourself still can’t grow up and get over it. Or maybe you were just looking for a few “likes” at someone else’s expense…..
You’ve obviously been here awhile so I’m sure you saw the numerous names and pictures that were posted here in the infamous flamewars. Did you know that the victims in two of those cases truly feared for their safety? But I guess that was alright because no one liked them, right? Or maybe they brought it on themselves, right? Maybe bullying is just a made up concept, right?
I also highly doubt LTWWB would make the news on any level, even on a slow day. Thats just plain silly and childish to suggest.
One of my first comments on this site was how this place was like an elementary school with no teachers. Glad to see people like yourself are still living up to that comment. And I did have a little respect (well, as much as someone named Nukka can give someone named Spiggy) for you up until that comment you made on “Bus Driver Blues” earlier.
So one of your first comments on this forum was negative and insulting, so you could feel superior to everyone else.
But all the really great commenters are long gone. I miss many of their entertaining–and yes, often off-topic– comments.
We’re not gone; just reinvented with new names. Our commenting styles were unappreciated or deemed inappropriate by some god and our previous selves deleted. Cry not.
Nukka: Just because a practice exists doesn’t make it right. At one point in time it was perfectly appropriate to beat your wife.
I agree Angel. Off topic stuff makes this place worthwhile. The personal attacks, not so much.
Im guilty of attacking the user who pretended to own a local landscaping business. So my hands are dirty too. But I stopped because I try not to stoop to certain people’s level.
Thank goodness for you, GJ. You’re one of the few reasons I even come here anymore. I love your comments. The comments I like least are from pontificating & hypocritical cyclists. Their input makes me snort with derision.
I really miss the urban girl weightlifter. She had real flavour , although her repeated micro-aggressions against people with red hair were a bit triggery, for obvious reasons.
I found this board a lot more amusing when there was a cast of colourful characters like Ivan, montrealman, Mr. Meaty, Molly, and the Fool.
As for mm, I saw him more as a persona so I didn’t take anything he said too personally. In the end I think he simply got tired of his carefully crafted posts being deleted too often. Last I heard he now spends his time “curating” his collection of memorabilia.
Before the downward spiral, it was amusing. Completely agree with you on that King.
And by pseudo-philosophic ‘carefully crafted’ posts, you mean ‘verbal diarrhea’. FIFY.
He really doesn’t get off the hook as a harmless bumpkin; He threw personal attacks too.I can only assume that that, plus his misplaced ‘freedom of speech’ rants got him banned.
(Apologies for the tablet postings…sigh)
Scooter, you shouldn’t feel guilty about the landscaping business. You called out a liar, on a factual issue and presented proof. No harm, no foul, IMO.
Scooter,
Maybe calling mm’s long missives “carefully crafted” was overly generous but I think he did put a lot of time into some of his longer posts. I tended to simply ignore those but I got a kick out of his quips, his “philosophical” battles with other posters, and his fascination with “magnificent labia”.
And yes, the downfall of a number of posters has been that they couldn’t resist name calling and personal insults. I can contend with anyone’s ideas or opinions, no matter how radical or politically incorrect, but once it gets into personal insults it crosses the line.
Cheers,
The King
Spiggy,
You have been making a good contribution to this board as well. Good stuff!
I don’t always agree with your opinions …. but that’s a good thing …. it gets people thinking if they see ideas that are different. Otherwise, there would be no discussion – only cheerleading for the self-righteous.
Cheers,
The King
People need to keep their true opinions to themselves for the sake of the greater good.
That is all. 🙂
Spiggy, we hardly knew ye.
So am I still Queen of the Boards?
And who said I was a cyclist?
Ah, I see… you’re done with social-media but a public forum will do instead ?…gotcha… because it’s obviously the time and place right?
