Dear film festival: overall, you’re wonderful. You even showed a full-length feature made by a local film prof. Great! However, do you think it might have been important to let potential viewers of the film know what they were getting into before they settled in for more than 100 minutes of long, still shots, loud industrial sounds, people staring into space, and literally three exchanges of dialogue in the whole film? Would it have been so hard to put in the program a clue like “not a typical storyline-based film” or something like that? I love supporting local, and could even learn to appreciate something like this, but it was not a nice surprise for someone who just showed up and wanted to relax with a movie. —Never Went to Film School

  1. Never went to film school? – never been to regional film festival either, obviously. If pretentious, flatulent, obscure, self-indulgent gobshite is not your “bag” you should probably stay home and illegally download what you know you’ll enjoy.

  2. You would have loved Wormwood’s theater from a while back. I used to want to slit my wrists after most shows. I finally had to stop going.

  3. Lol Ivan, would you believe that I actually still pay for the movies I watch?

OB – Remember, you get what you pay for. Free, right? You could have left.

  4. What Ivan said. ^ It’s not all pretentious schlock, though. Sometimes they have movies about space Nazis.

  5. I would Hugo. >: )It’s been a very long time since I was even tempted to spend money in a theatre and since History Channel now limits itself to Pawn or Picker shows or perpetual repeats of The Mummy (!!???!!)- it’s the DVD library for Ivan. Tonite – Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
On a sad note, after 5 seasons “Sea Patrol”s
last episode aired yesterday on Showcase.
    “THEY KILLED SWAIN!” “THOSE BASTARDS!”
Hammersleyheads will know what I’m talking about.

Now, what’s this about Space Nazis, young Gazmatron?

  6. Did you see his body???
Maybe he jumped overboard in time (like in those old cheesy Saturday matinees), mythbusters did it.

  7. On a happier note, (well, for me, anyway), Boardwalk Empire is back!
I’m friggin’ addicted to that show!

  8. Hugo – THEY HELD A DOCKSIDE MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR HIM! Oh, I can’t talk about this anymore, It’s still too raw.
He wasn’t even one of my favorite crewmen but after 75 episodes they become like family (and by that I mean the family that you wish you had, not the ones you’re actually saddled with)

  9. that’s an awesome zombie movie zedman. i’m jonesing for the walking dead and american horror story

  10. I love Call me Fitz. His family reminds me of a family I know well.lol
The new show The New Normal on ABC is good as well.

zZz I used to love horror flicks but I haven’t gone to one in so many years. It would be great if I could tag along the next time you go to the movies?

  11. i went to ne of these things years ago. it was mostly populated by pretentious assholes, in armani suits and other money wasting shit. those first showings are nothing to live for either. just a bunch of slackjaws looking to feel high and toity over the other idiots there.

  12. Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi were odd films, almost mesmerizing. I did enjoy them, though this is thirty years ago. They’re movies about human activity shot and played at high speed with a continuous instrumental soundtrack usually classical, no dialogue or voiceover. Not everybody’s cup of tea but I like the odd.

  13. “Winged Migration” had minimal narration but it didn’t need it. More drama and emotion than most of what passes for entertainment. Even better than “March of the Penguins” , which was pretty damned awesome, itself.
    Favorite doc. ever.

  14. Well, I don’t know. I’ve always enjoyed “Closely Watched Trains” followed closely by dubbed versions of “Mr. Hulot’s Holiday.”

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  15. I usually find that there are more people involved in making a Canadian movie than people who actually watch it, unless it’s the CBC Luvvies.
