Okay, let’s get something straight. Just because a certain university cut the women’s hockey team, that doesn’t make them sexist! If you’re losing money on something—get rid of it. If something doesn’t bring in any money—get rid of it. And you know what just makes it worse? The fact that most of the people complaining about this have never been to one of the women’s hockey games! I am a woman and I’ve never been to a women’s hockey game, ever. Because they’re boring. That’s right, I said it. Slow and boring. I’m glad they cut the team so maybe they can use the money for something useful. Hell, maybe they should give the city council some money managing tips. —Logic is a wonderful thing

  1. I watched some footage on last night’s news and kept thinking, what the fuck is wrong with those skaters? They skate slower than my 97 year old mother pushing a shopping cart full of cement blocks. Boring and slow sums it up quite nicely.

  2. Op they won’t be using the money for anything useful. The team wasn’t cut because they weren’t liked, they were cut because of a budget cut to the school.

Thanks to Dexter, our education system is going to suffering in more ways than a cut hockey team.

  3. How best for a University to preserve Wimmin’s Hockey. Cut academic programs or raise tuition?
My, that is a dilly of a pickle.

  4. Good for you, sebastian, you’ve never been to a hockey game. I don’t believe you because you weren’t on the news though.

  5. Their women’s team is one of the best in the country. Their men’s team is one of the worst. To me, it speaks volumes about the value of the program – you might not be able to sell tickets, but if the school is known for their women’s team it will encourage students to attend.

  6. Maybe if they removed the rules on women’s hockey and allowed more contact & violence, maybe then people would watch. Otherwise, stick to real hockey.

  7. FA’s right. Unfortunately, this university’s operating budget has been cut and it’s not just women’s hockey that’s seeing the effects of this, unfortunately.

I’m kind of mixed on this, to be honest. Any budget cut SUCKS, and while this university *is* known for its athletics, there’s so much more to the university, and ultimately, I think academics should take priority over athletics, championship winning or not. It would be an awful shame to see class offerings decreased, professors cut, staff positions that are essential for running the university smoothy cut in order to save a sports team. University is or SHOULD have its main focus on the classroom, and if a sports team, that isn’t the big sponsorship draw (I mean, how many dollars in sponsorships does this university’s men’s football team bring in and how much revenue from ticket sales does it receive?) has to be cut to save academics…well then so be it.

  8. “Their women’s team is one of the best in the country. Their men’s team is one of the worst. “

Pesky facts : Last year the men’s team won the national championship, this year they ended the season ranked 7th in the country. The women’s team did not make the top 10 in the national rankings.

  9. Unfortunately we are at the point that almost every dollar used is a business P&L decision, not a community one. Maybe we could use some of the money from the Convention Centre? Or Kid Rock?

  10. Ugh, I entirely agree, OP. It pissed me off so much constantly hearing people be like “OMIGAW THIS IS SO SEXIST”. And then I had to ask myself what the response would be if the men’s team had been cut instead. I’m not saying that it wasn’t a sexist decision, but I am saying that I haven’t heard anything that leads me to believe it’s a sexist decision other than solely that it was a female team, which is definitely not enough.

  11. Athletics at Saint Mary’s did not solve the problem, they just moved this over to the administrative side. 21 players X almost 6,000 dollars, you do the math. That’s what they lost. How about the recruits? How much in good will did this short sighted move cost…plenty! Did you hear of any other options….no

  12. SMU will always have the rich Asians who will send their kids over to learn Finance in English. Trust me on this.

You think athletics keeps that place afloat? HAH. 21 out of the thousands that go there? Drop in the bucket. Admissions and recruitment talks to dozens of students every week (not just high school students — mature students, international students, transfer students, etc…) who call inquiring about being admitted to the university. I doubt they’re going to cry over 21 students leaving in the grand scheme of things.

And yes, I know what I’m talking about.

  13. logic might be a wonderful thing, but in this case, it won’t apply anywhere here in this world. only thing you can use logic for, is toilet paper, and then, only if it is proven to be indeed logic, and not theory.
