I cannot believe Empire Theatres at Park Lane mall has avoided playing the movie “Juno” starring our very own Ellen Page. What kind of support for local talent is there when we totally disregard playing a movie that not only received rave critical reviews worldwide but is also stars an amazing talent from this frikken city. I am totally revolted by this. It’s time for Halifax(Canada) to start supporting fellow talent, it’s just pathetic.

Just plain stupid.

  1. If you think anyone in the management level at Empire Theaters has any intelligence, you have been mis-informed. They only show movies with lots of: Violence, Sex and Nudity, Gratuitous killing and gore. They feel threatened when a movie has any level of intelligence or meaning behind it…

  2. Well it really kind of portrays the wrong message. I wouldn’t want my 15 y/o daughter thinking that it’s ok to get pregnant and that her bf’s gonna be lovey dovey. If she starts seeing things like the movie portray, she’ll start having unprotected sex. That’s if i had a daughter. That’s just my opinion after reading about the movie and what transpires in it. It’s only showing how she dealt with it. Parklane also has limited space and they mainly try to cater to the market in that area. I personally prefer to go to Parklane because not as much people go to that one so you don’t get idiots talking in the theatre. So really, it’s not about the movie. It’s about what sells. Mind you, i would have assumed that particular movie would only be playing in Oxford. She was also in X-Men Movies. Which is really quite the other extreme from the other movies she did. A good sign, stating that she’s pretty talented and can pretty much do it. I’m not really into movies like Juno or anything like that. Anything that’s too dramatic isn’t my style really. I’m more into the action, horror comedy, fantacy sci-fi. so i’d prefer seeing those playing in parklane rather than movies like Juno. But they do have an obligation to cater to everyone’s taste. They are in a city that house diversity and different tastes after all.

  3. Coyotex, you’re an idiot. Your daughter is not going to have unprotected sex because of a movie, she’s going to have unprotected sex if you can’t muster the courage to have a frank and open discussion with her about sex. Furthermore, Juno is the last of your concerns — what with all the other shitty movies out there warping the world. I bet Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman rank high in her favourite movie lists — wonderful movies that paint a dream world surrounding sex and relationships.I usually find that Empire Theatres don’t have a clue about who wants to see what movie. The Oxford, yes, will usually get the critically acclaimed films — for like a week. After that you have to find a way to get your ass to Bayer’s Lake (dont’ even get me started on the bus service to the BLIP)… I just have this hunch that most of the hipsters and students who live in and arround the downtown area would rather walk to ParkLane and see a great movie on a smaller screen than drive or bus out the BLIP and see a great movie on a massive screen (which are better suited to action movies anyway).

  4. I remember when Park Lane first opened. There was a lot of high talk in the papers by the owners and their ilk about how having so many screens downtown would make it possible to not just bring us the current hollywood hits, but they could also bring us smaller independent films. I’m not making this up! I’d say look for yourselves but this was pre-internet days.
