Where is the prospering Nova Scotia economy? I look on teh job sites and I see so many jobs at fast food, retail etc that don’t pay enough to live.

I have a job that “pays well” according to most people yet once I pay student debt (min payments, not even repaying the actual loan, so none of this “once its paid off you’ll be fine”.. since I cant even get to the principal) I am poor. I cant afford a movie, I can not afford healthy food, I can not afford even the sales racks at clothing stores, so I wear second hand clothes to this “well paying job”. I worked my ass off for a uni degree and now I have nothing. Our government says this is the land of opportunity.. it sure is if you want to work at wendy’s or montannas or any other minimum wage place.

I tried having a second job, then when tax time came aroudn they took back 98 percent of the money I made at the second job, and screwed me even worse.

I simply give up on Nova Scotia… I’m goign to make a “Alberta Bound” sign on the back of my diploma from SMU and kiss this economic shit hole good bye.

  1. Not true. I lived out there for $800 bucks a month in rent (good building, furnished and all utilities incl.) The rent in Halifax is about the same, for much less. Better transit – no car, no gas. Food costs the same…….so dont know who’ve you been speaking too!

  2. food is cheaper there. Milk isnt a billion bucks, and for the most part rent is MUCH higher. The average one bed room here is about $600, there it is almost $900. to say that you had a cheap place isnt indicitive of the area as a whole.

  3. I had several options when I moved out – all better than anything in Halifax! You try finding anything in Halifax with furnishings, cable, internet, phone, all utilities and close enough to work to walk and you wont be able to find anything for $800.

  4. over 80% of rentals arent furnished. So why complain about something that majority of people dont go for.

  6. If someone is going to leave NS immediately for better job prospects, furnished rentals take the stress out of settling into a new place because everything is there for you.

  7. Try Careerbeacon.com they post dozens of jobs daily, many of which pay between 25k and 100k per year. Good luck

  8. easy there….i rent two apartments away…(I know , but it’s cheaper than hotels or long stays…) one in St. Catherines Ontario and one in Calgary.. the one in Calgary alone is 1200/month (although with common sense in the western air, it’s rent protected…wake up NS). Check the want ads for Alberta. groceries are cheap, taxes down from NS but the cost of living outside of that is not inexpensive. jobs are plentiful but at 16.00 hour for unskilled or a semi skilled computer tech at 21.00 hour you are not going to be living high here. nurses or engineering fine, but you need a skill here or you will be looking at the air fares in the paper every weekend.hope to see you though.
