So there are “holiday” wreaths up on the street lights in downtown Dartmouth. I thought that it was in bad form to put up Christmas crap before Halloween. This must be a mistake.

  1. I should have taken out the guy hanging from the street lights with a wreath and scotch tape between his teeth.

  2. Personally, I think we should be allowed to have Halloween and Remembrance Day before we have to think about Christmas.

I have no problem with lights (and onlyt the lights) being left up LATER into the New Year since January is so bleak anyway, and a bit of colour brightens things up.

  3. I wonder if it’s more about getting the stuff up while the weather is still half decent. Hanging on to frozen metal poles while hooking up the wreaths must be painful for the hands.

  4. I saw x-mas shit up at Rona a couple of weeks ago. I’ll never go back (for unrelated reasons, but it didn’t help).

  5. I hate what Christmas truly is – its false sentimentality and schlocky music, the stores and their ads slamming you between the eyes with promises of fulfilment if you buy [fill in the blank] for a mere $279.99. Then there’s the buy-buy-buy-till-your-credit-card-dissolves mentality and, most annoying of all, the peace on earth and good will toward others horseshit that evaporates just after New Year’s.

  6. Christmas is what you make of it, if you choose to be all materialistic and such then it is you who makes it fake. However if you make it a time of togetherness with family and friends then it is truly the time it is meant to be. As for Christmas items on sale and lights being up mid october…i realize it is simply the stores effort to capitalize on our dollar, but no one forces me to buy.

  7. My dad just used to leave the Christmas lights stapled to our house year-round. No need to worry about putting up and taking down Christmas decorations ever again!

  8. Unreal. They’re putting up this shit earlier and earlier every year. Soon Christmas decorations will be up while we’re trying to celebrate Canada Day, for Christ’s sake!

And RubyJane, I couldn’t agree with you more. Let the kids have Halloween and let the veterans have their Remembrance Day before we even CONSIDER pulling out the Christmas decorations!!

  9. agree. xmas before remembrance day IS bad form … when i was younger and free of gift giving obligation i valued christmas for the spirit.. now…. im working out the explain for why my [future] sister-in-law and subsequent [future] nephews don’t get presents from me
srsly… if u have a short and sweet answer- i’ll use it 😉

  10. Agreed Christmas has been bastardized by commercialism and avarice. Yes, I will get my kids and grandkids something but want nothing in return. What the important part for me is spending time together and a good meal. If the politicians really want to make a law, then no Christmas advertisment until the 1st of December.

  11. Lights going up, and maybe the occassional wreath isn’t too bad… As pointed out earlier in this thread it’s better (and probably easier) to get it done before the ground is covered in ice.

But seriously; decorating malls, and having christmas stuff on sale by October 1st is jumpin the gun a lil
