We live in a world where some evil “person” or “persons” for lack of a vile enough word entered an elementary school days before Christmas and murdered 9 adults and 18 children.

I’m holding my babies extra tight today and I hope you’re all holding the ones you love close too. The world can be a cruel despicable place sometimes and we all love to point out the bad and ugly things. We enjoy discussing them especially here where our spiteful words and scathing remarks are always welcome. Let’s all remember not to overlook what is good in life while we are busy searching out the next bitchworthy flaw in the universe.

I have a roof above my head, food in my fridge, family within reach and love in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are always with anyone who is suffering and today are especially with the families in Connecticut who have lost loved ones.

I’m sorry that nothing I can feel is good enough to make a dent in this. I’m sorry that these families feel so alone while the whole world mourns with them. I’m sorry we live in a world where people let other people sink this low. I’m so very sorry. —madeinthe80s

  1. They love they’re 2nd Amendment too much to make changes to it.

I’m sure the child killer must have been mentally ill to some degree to have done such horrendously terrifying action.I feel a part of the problem is people not asking for help. Those will continue to avoid seeking help for mental illness until society changes how we view mental illness. We must stop stigmatizing those with MI and considering MI a weakness, until then happenings like this will continue to occur.

I have a sense of humour but, society doesn’t laugh at those with type 1 diabetes,a disease a person is born with.Much like mental illness.

  2. Excellent post, Maidinthe80s. I think you’ve pretty much captured how a lot of us, including myself, are feeling.
Hug your kids, folks. Talk to them and, more importantly, listen to them.

  3. I’ve felt nothing but rage towards this whole situation since the news first broke last Friday. First off, semi-automatic weapons that shoot multiple rounds in a short period of time. Why on Earth should anyone not in the military have the RIGHT to own these? Christ, why not just give them the right to own a rocket launcher or a tank? That way they can kill more innocent people.
Secondly, the wall-to-wall coverage of this sad event and the news networks serving their corporate masters. Great, make the killer a household name, let the world obsess over him. Make him a celebrity. That way the next gun-obsessed misfit who thinks his life isn’t worth a dog turd doesn’t have to just off himself, he can take a bunch of innocents with him and know he will be remembered even if the ones he murdered aren’t.
I sincerely hope some serious discussion comes of this for the sake of our neighbours down south. My heart goes out to all those parents who lost their children and the surviving kids who escaped the rampage but lost friends not to mention innocence. My heartfelt anger goes to the political leaders down there who believe Joe Blow’s right to own an Uzi trumps public safety. Grow up!!

  4. There are 26 new angels watching over Newtown now. May God bless everyone affected by that tragedy and may he give them strength to move forward.

  5. this also happens in china. men rampaging through elementary schools attacking children. however, they use knives over there. deaths are fewer. injuries are less severe. i would imagine the emotional damage is the same for the surviving kiddies.

  6. Boru and Troodon, I agree, but nothing’s going to change. Because if it were ever going to change for the better it would already have. People will never voluntarily give up their guns, and the media will never voluntarily, not report on events like this.

There will always be monsters, either born or made, and the media vultures will always be there to immortalize them. And today, didn’t I see some opportunistic SOB who has the spotlight right now, using this tragedy to further his own agenda….Things aren’t going to change anytime soom….damn 🙁

  7. IF there are no guns, you could use a vehicle & mow down a crowd.
Or you could use an accelerant & set the place aflame.
As for the STUND comment about why anyone would need or want a semi or automatic weapon except the military !

Where the fuck have you been hiding, under a rock in the back of a deep cave ?!?

The amount of collateral (isn’t that word a nice friendly sounding word much nicer than murdered) damage to civilians by military personel in Iraq, Afghanistan, African Nations, Syria , Gaza etc etc etc etc .
Even the military IMO don’t need those types of weapons. People are killing each other in record numbers all over the planet …& you decide to rage over 20 kids & 6 Adults !
Why because it happened in a so called ” safe ” neighborhood ?

The outrage being committed by on this planet ,much of it by the US or US backed fighters is way worse than 26 dead !
    How about 150,000 dead ?!?
    http://web.mit.edu/humancostiraq/

In my Opinion yer priorities are really fucked up !

  8. THE CONTINGENCY OF EXISTENCE

“I’m sorry nothing I can feel is good enough to make a dent in this.” madeinthe80’s

That is a true assertion. Nothing she can feel will make a dent in this. But is there anything that will? Is there any answer to the question, “Why did this happen?”

Could it be a sign of God’s displeasure at the sins of mankind? Maybe, but the kids at Sandy Hook Elementary School don’t strike one as particularly sinful.

What about environmental factors? What about the widespread presence of guns, particularly in the U.S.? Well, as the old saying goes, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” and yes, guns make it a lot easier to kill a lot of people at one time but there are other ways for the determined killer. There just doesn’t seem to be a cause-effect relationship between the presence of guns and the homicide rate. A statistical relation between the prevalence of guns and the homicide rate yes, but not a cause-effect relationship, i.e., I have a gun and therefore I will kill.

What about improved intervention strategies for those suffering from mental illness? But that is usually discovered after the fact, not before. Is it a mistake to even look for environing conditions at all – poverty, a traumatized childhood and so on? There doesn’t seem to be a direct cause-effect relation between such conditions and the homicide rate, i.e., I am poor, suffering from mental illness and therefore I will kill.

What about human nature itself? Is such behaviour a consequence of some people just natural born killers? Is there a “killer gene”? Are some people just evil? There seems to be a stronger case for this than environmental factors but the same problem arises: How are they to be detected before the bullets start to fly?

So is there an answer to the question, “Why did this happen?” Probably not. But there might be a lesson, that of the contingency of existence, of life’s basic fragility. Maybe all that can be done is follow madeinthe80’s lead and hug our babies extra tight today.

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  9. I feel pretty bad for the parents and kids alike. But what i can’t stand about Americans is their love of guns and their unwillingness to admit that fully automatic assault rifles do not belong in the general populace. I’m willing to bet the rest of my lifes paycheques that, at least one of those parents are a card carrying member of the NRA.

  10. A lot of Americans love they’re 2nd Amendment Rights more than their children.Loving Anything more than my child is something I will never be able to comprehend;especially to love my right to bare arms more than my child. As a mother, I would die for my child in a second.

  11. One again More-on lives up to his name. Hope you’re more on-target when you’re toting you Mossbergs than when trying to formulate an argument.
Question: which nation was most responsible for ensuring that the even most benighted low-grade primitive in the third world has access to a simple, reliable automatic assault weapon with a high rate of fire and 30 round magazine capacity.?
*Hint – It’s not the United States.

  12. This isn’t about a war zone or a military conflict More. This is about a leading nation in the western world allowing very efficient, very lethal weapons to be kept as a recreational item. I’m not calling for a ban on guns, that’s unrealistic, my comment concerned the need for semi-automatic weapons with multiple rounds.
I understand your feelings about the Gaza strip and places around the world where children get sucked into conflict but concern about what happens there and what happened in Connecticut are not mutually exclusive. In other words, because I voiced an opinion about the school shooting doesn’t mean I don’t feel strongly about events that happen elsewhere.

  13. While not a parent, I am a dedicated Aunt to wonderful children. I cannot even fathom the sorrow that these families of the children and the adults murdered.

Is the solution to this issue simple? I don’t think it is. Is it a lack of mental health care, eliminating semi-automatic guns, school lockdowns? Who can say for sure. So what positivity can we take from something so horrific.

Like madeinthe80’s said, look around and treasure our blessings. That, for most of us, is pretty damned simple.

  14. I agree with Harper. Automatic assault rifles do not belong in the general populations’ hands.

A handgun to protect yourself? Sure. Fine. But why in the hell did this guy’s mother have such an arsenal of guns?

I’m just so sad for these families and the town of Newtown. Puts a lot into perspective.

  15. I too think mental illness is the root of this problem. Society today is very shortsighted, if it’s not in our face via the media, social or otherwise, many don’t concern themselves with things going on past their front step. I’m guilty of this myself.

The answer is not simple, the question itself is not simple. The simple thing is to take action. The most straightforward, natural, human thing to do is the thing that we seem most hesitant to do. How often do we angrily accuse bitchers of failure to act? Of failing to stand up to a bully, to inform someone of their inappropriate actions or simply reach out to someone in need.

We need to pocket our phones, log off Facebook and spend some time in the real world. Say hello to your grumpy neighbor, smile at the wierd guy in the back of the class, invite your awkward coworker to join you for lunch. Our own disregard for the lives of those suffering from mental illness or even just social ineptitude is often reflected in the loss of life at the hands of the most disturbed of these individuals. Would a friendly hello have saved those lives in Newton? Perhaps not, but it couldn’t have hurt.

  16. Paingirl …I beg to differ , there’s at least 10 knee jerk reactionary head up assholes been here recently. Look at my dislikes. People FUCKING HATE it being pointed out they are flaming assholes.
Still no sign of a bitch from any of those 10 on the death toll in African babies this year. (or any of the rest of you )
Look up the problems WORLD WIDE for children without access to clean drinking water ….2500 DIE EACH & EVERY FUCKIN’ DAY !

    Where’s the outrage ?
Where was the poster of this bitch, a week ago ?
    Last year ?
    EVERY ?
On That Subject ….Oh No , much easier to come on here & attempt to be the one to start a bitch on a subject they know will be popular ! One sure subject to get all the other similarly minded retards onside spewing the same tired bullshit rhetoric …
Or the 10 minimum flaming knee jerking assholes who thumbed down my response along with “Ivan the wants to be popular no matter what” !?!

All of you are fucking hypocrites …come on here all sad & solemn …”the poor little ones!” “THeir poor families !” BLAH BLAH BLAH FUCK OFF !

THere are real problems in this world people getting yer knickers in a knot about 20 dead children killed on DEC 14, when none of you ever make the slightest peep out of yer pie holes/ Key Boards & nothing from any of you on the 12500… THAT’S TWELVE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED CHILDREN WHO HAVE DIED SINCE THEN…from unclean water & all the others killed by a host of other equally horrible acts.

No we’ll just jump on the ole Band wagon & commisserate with each other, on how bad we all feel today about 20 young strangers, who’s lives have ended too soon. While all over this exact same planet, thousands of children have died & you don’t even give them a fuckin’ single key stroke .

So please dislike the shit out of this post. Makes me feel really good to know ,once again I am 100 % right on the money & this fucked up world is full of big feeling hypocritical assholes who love to fit in with the rest of the herd .
BAAAA, BAAAAA sheeple is exactly the correct name for most of you !

  17. I have 2 wonderful children and the thought of sending them to school and they never returning is one of my greatest nightmares. We have lived in various countries and send our children to school wherever we go (even some war-riddled countries). If we lived in the States I would have never given it a second thought.

I just makes me wonder if any place is actually safe and the best we can do is make sure our children know we love them.

  18. More, I agree with what you are saying in part. I saw a pic of kids in Pakistan, who are killed by double-tap drone strikes on a daily basis by the USA, holding a poster supporting the victims of the shooting. It was upsetting. The Sandy Hook shooting doesn’t have to mean less because of it though, More.

  19. Y’know, for a man who claims to have no truck with religion, More-on certainly does enjoy playing the Messiah from time to time. I suppose it helps that he can erect his own cross and climb up on it provided he gets paid union scale, of course.
And calling us sheeple for refusing to let him tell us WHAT we should be getting exercised about and WHY – well, that one never gets old.
