If I hear one more fucking parasite
er politician
exclaim that we should get out and vote because of the “sacrifice of our brave soldiers who gave their lives so we have the freedom to choose our leaders” IÂ’m going to FUCKING LOSE IT!!! First off, itÂ’s not since the Second World War that our freedom to vote or choose our leader was EVER at risk. The soldiers who are fighting in the current conflicts are not securing our right to vote, so stop using them as pawns in your pathetic attempts to garner support.

Note: Not blaming the military in the least. They have my utmost respect.

You want to do something to encourage us to vote? How about showing us some leadership you self-serving pricks? If anything undermines the actions of the military or, in your words, demeans their sacrifice, it is the lying, cheating, and stealing that continually goes on behind closed doors at the expense of those who ‘elected’ you. If you believe they pay the ultimate sacrifice so we can vote, then give us someone worth voting FOR. I have yet to meet a politician worth their weight in spam let alone worthy of my vote. Give me someone to vote FOR as opposed to a bunch to vote against and I’ll see you at the polls. Until then, go fuck yourself and your party!

  1. I completely agree. You know what else ticks me off? Self-righteous patriots screaming that our soldiers are quote-unquote ”fighting for our freedom”. Yes, I fully respect our soldiers, but our opponents in the war we’re fighting in is not directly threatening our freedom; rather we’re fighting for closure, dominance, and the betterment of an oppressed territory. I’m so sick of people taking advantage of serious issues to prove their selfish, stupid points.

  2. i disagree. you should vote. if you don’t believe any of the candidates are worth of your vote, you should abstain by marking a huge X across all of the candidates names, or leave it blank. if enough people did this and 80% of the people turned out to vote, then the politicians would start getting the picture… it’s when you don’t vote at all that you become meaningless and your opinions become moot.

  3. LOL “…you self-serving pricks…” best line I read in a while!

Dino, I have to disagree. The current war on terror was close to being expanded in Toronto. That close enough?

That being said, OP is right. It is hard to not be cynical of politicians, the way things are going. And the Second World War was momentous enough that I feel we should all still be grateful. History can repeat itself!

  4. Dino: Toronto terrorism plot in 2006. Although those kids were allegedly “inspired” by al-Qaeda, not actually affiliated.

  5. Not only that, I had to laugh at the kids who were protesting recruiters at the schools. I guess they forgot they can do that because if the military. Sort of sounds like a paradox (needing a dictaorship to protect Freedom and democracy) but absolutely essential. Most of us under the age of 65 have never suffered the effects of war as until recently the last conflict was Korea between 1950-1953 and even then we didn’t a very large contingent. Even the Cold War didn’t affect many people in their day-to-day lives (but because of a strong military presence war did not happen). And everyone knows if it doesn’t affect you then there’s no problem.

If everyone left Afghanistan, what do you think will happen? Will women and children there be respected? Will Al-Quieda and other terrorist groups go “Oh we won let’s live in peace?”

There is only peace through strength.

And really people, exactly how long does it take to vote? Maybe a minute or two, if that, once you get to your polling station.

  6. You vote because we are incredibly fortunate to live in a country that we can decide who forms government. Yes, the system is beyond perfect, but the alternative is dictatorship or monarchy, which do you lazy asshats prefer?

  7. I’m with mortparn and what he said. You lose your right to complain about the gov’t if you don’t at least do what he said.

  8. I agree too. Not voting is equivalent to agreeing with the status quo. If you really disagree with who is governing or your choices for government, spoiling you ballot is the only way to make that opinion count on election day. Otherwise, non-voters are considered to think like those who actually voted on election day. The other way to express your disapproval is to write letters to all the candidates and tell them why you are not voting for them and what you expect from them. Unfortunately, both options require the bitcher to get off their butt and DO something and participate in the democratic system.

  9. i always vote, mainly because i am a woman and i recognize the fact that there are those who came before me not all that long ago that fought against the oppression of women in this country and indeed in the world to give me that right. democracy 250? that was a joke, for men it was, for women its more like democracy 90. it’s not about the politicians its about the act. the ability to excercise your voice and be heard. if you dont want to vote for anyone go in and mark all the boxes.

the greatest threat to democracy is apathy. i shudder when i think about the lives of women in countries like afghanistan who have no rights and every time i mark that box on election day i thank my gods i was born in this place
