WTF Nova Scotia!?

The liquor stores close at 10? Am I a little child who needs to be told when I can have a drink?

I’ve lived here for almost two years and so far I’ve been told that I can’t park my car on the street, I have to pay at least 2.50 for a glass of shitty rum, I have to pay 13% tax on everything I buy, I have to get my car inspected every 2 years, and I’m not allowed to buy booze to take home after 10 pm. Like I’m some sort of a little baby and I came to visit mean old Aunt Nova Scotia and she’s like the biggest bitch babysitter I’ve ever had.

18 dollars for a pitcher of beer? W to the T to the F? In the immortal words of Kurt Cobain — Grandma, take me home. BTW, restricting peoples access to booze does not control alcoholism.—Where the rivers of whiskey are flowing – NOT

  1. Are you that much of a poor planner or alcoholic that you can’t deal with fucking 10pm? They’re open for twelve hours.

  2. bookfast is right, Vin Arts in Clayton Park is open late too. I’ve never found it difficult to plan around a 10 pm closing time, but hey, a boozer is a boozer.

  3. Hey, forgot to mention, if you can’t rationalize 18 bucks on a pitcher you can get a Brewtender at Maxwell’s for $28. That’s like 2 pitchers, and it won’t get cold on you.

  4. this is the kinda shit that makes me glad i HAD to give up the booze; paying too much and jons’n when it wasn’t available

  5. Wow you mean to say that you can’t get tot he liquor store between the hours of like 10 or 11am to 10pm. That’s pretty bad try planning your day a little better.
Saftey Inspections are a good thing. A pain in the ass but still a good thing. Better every two years then one.

  6. It’s fun watching the liquor store close. Everyone scrambling for the door, pulling on the handle, trying to beg and plead with the workers inside, cursing and screaming.
Yes OB, you ARE a little child. Same goes with all the others I’ve seen literally throwing a temper tantrum when they can’t have their “bottle”.

  7. Oh, poor, poor baby!

The “nanny state” is really out of control, what with retail stores closing at a regular hour.

Look at all the OTHER things we poor Nova Scotians are “forbidden:”

I can’t go shoe shopping at midnight—because the stores closed at 9:00! How outrageous!

I am “banned” from buying books at 3:00 am, again because the store wasn’t open at that time JUST FOR ME!!!! (Obviously an attempt by “the government” to prevent me from reading!!! Or no! Wait! Could it be? The lady who owns the store doesn’t want to work all 24 hours of the day? PSHAW!!!)

Grow up OP. 10:00 pm is a perfectly normal time for any store to close, regardless of what they are selling. (Unless a person is a shift worker—then I could understand how it could be difficult to get to certain places when they are open. Are you a shift worker, OP?)

For your information, there is even a fully stocked liquor store attached to a “super” grocery store right downtown—which means it’s not much more difficult to pick up your “refreshments” at the same time you pick up your groceries—I mean, you do buy food sometimes, right?

But yeah, OP, you’re on to something. Let’s have a whole team of employees at every outlet in the province being paid for a full extra shift each and every night to serve the 3 people who absolutely need to re-stock their liquor cabinet at 4:00 in the morning.

    GREAT idea, OP, just GREAT.

  8. Nobody likes to be told. Nobody wants the pursuit their whims limited by you, neighbours or even government. Why the need to control the citizen in such a way? Why does gov’t think liquor should be sold at only certain times? Isn’t it the small businessman’s prerogative to supply in competitive fashion? WHY are their hands tied and why do the sheep accept this as “the way it is so plan for it”? Is gov’t your new Daddy?

All the shitty things the OP listed about Aunt Nova Scotia (haha) are true but she doesn’t stop there. From collecting your bottle deposits only to never provide the means for refund to taking your hard-earned money each time you dare cross the bridge. But never mind all that! Aunt Nova Scotia will pick up your land-fill destined appliances road-side but if you don’t put those cans in a clear bag your SOL. Makes a whole lot of sense from this side of the fence…. NOT.

I’d better not get started. Today is awesome.

  9. Go the fuck back to wherever. Our liquor store hours are actually an improvement compared to the dark ages of 20 years ago, and don’t even get me started on what it must have been like back in the days of the stubby…they didn’t even have storefronts!

  10. Get a grip, the extra expense at having those stores open would come out of tax payers pockets. It’s all economics, if it isn’t a money maker, then it isn’t going to happen. Same with the prices at the bar, they charge what they charge because that’s what people are willing to pay. Be a mature and responsible comsumer – shop for the best price – just like the rest of us.

  11. A lot of places close before ten, why should the liqueur store be any different? Is this really an example of the nanny state? Helmet laws I can see, but a store closing at a certain time? Come on… It’s gotta close eventually.

  12. kay, what is so hard about taking your empties to a bottle depot?

NS isn’t the only place in the world to have a toll on a road / bridge / whatever. Don’t wanna pay the toll? Go around the basin.

How is it that some days a person can seem sensible (yesterday’s tip bitching) and then the next day go completely bat-shit crazy and insist that an entire province is out to get the little guy.

  13. It’s not hard to take your bottles to a bottle depot when they EXIST. What you have there is recycling plants that pay by weight while you’re charged a flat rate deposit on EACH bottle/can. The reason is because there’s no legislation in place in NS forcing manufacturers to honour the deposit they just don’t. Why should they? Their Daddy doesn’t say they have to and that would *gasp* remove despoits collected from their revenue stream.

Toll highways are crap in Canada. We’re the highest taxed nation in the world yet we continue to pay per use of crown property. It’s bullshit, but you’re used to it. “Don’t wanna pay the toll? Go around the basin.” Is that like “Don’t wanna pay the toll? You can walk for free instead” Fuck off.

Hey, in a province where they legislate a 2% increase in minimum wage followed by a 1.5% increase in provincial sales tax topped off with increased parking rates and property tax (raising their rent)… Who’s your Daddy?

  14. The recycling depot I go to counts my bottles & cans and then calculates the proper refund based on this count. I don’t know where you were going.

  15. I usually don’t say this, because I usually don’t care about CFA whiners like you, but GO THE FUCK BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM.

I’m sure HRM can deal with one less alcoholic just fine, thanks.

  16. WTF are you talking about, kay?

I regularly take my bottles and cans to the recycling depot and they *always* count what I bring in. And I’ve taken my shit to depots all over HRM and the valley, so I don’t know where you’re getting your info from.

  17. So you’re telling me they count your bottles and cans so they can refund the deposit YOU PAID on each one? A street bum once told me they pay by weight which could easily be calculated without adding weight from all the water droplets still inside said bottles and cans.

  18. I think a lot of you are missing a good point to this bitch.
The fact that we have a “special” store to sell alcohol.
Many IMO civilized parts of this country have 24 hour convenience stores.( believe it or not we have some as well) There are also 24 hour grocery stores…& in civilized parts of the world you can go to one of these ‘Convenience Stores’ (what a great name ‘eh, there when you feel like using it) & buy many different things, including alcohol.
So your not limited to a Government run store, but this is Nova Scotia & most people here are so terrified of something new (like Sunday shopping) that they scream & rant & rage & go on about it, as well as poke fun at those of us who know there actually is a better way to do it.

You know humans for tens of thousands of years just squatted behind a bush or tree & took a dump. Let us all go back to that, these new fangled toilet things, are just polluting our harbours, wasting water, & all the time used to keep them clean. Not to mention we’ve got so much waste (bio-solids) building up people want to start spreading it out on fields.
Much better to go back to simpler time & system, you feel the urge, squat & go. We’ll save MILLIONS of dollars on sewage treatment plants, & the shit will still end up where its going to go anyway ! ! !

  19. Yeah, a street bum is such a reliable source of information – every bottle depot I’ve ever gone to in HRM count each and every bottle or can – they do not pay by weight.

  20. oh my god kay – YES THEY COUNT OUT EACH CAN, BOTTLE, JUICE BOX ETC….refunding the deposit that you paid on each item. YES this is correct!!!!! It is not done by weight UNLESS there is a bottle drive going on for a charity. I have done MANY bottle drives which then would be done by weight.

  21. The bottle exchange out here in the boonies TTFN, will ask you how many empties you got, & more often than not trust you & they just issue a payment note !
But I do see them counting people’s recyclables as well. I really don’t know how its done elsewhere, I’ve only gone to the local spot out here. the only thing I’ve ever seen them weigh is metal, that is brought in.

  22. Check your facts kay. Canada is not one of the highest taxed nations on the planet. Technically speaking, Germany is the highest taxed (as per percentage of earnings), meanwhile, Canada isn’t in the top 10. It seems you’re getting your information from the Bureau of kay’s Alarmist and Factually Incorrect Data Informational Service (also known as BAFIDIS). Their mission statement is: BAFIDIS, if we can’t easily denounce it, we’ll make up facts and denounce it.

    Check it out: http://www.oecd.org/document/6/0,3343,en_2…

It’s an OECD doc, so I hope it’s trustworthy enough for you.

As an aside, given what countries are in the top ten, or even slightly outside the top ten, it would seem that more taxes correlate to better living. France is awesome to live in, from what I hear, and it’s number 11.

  23. I save time when I take in my bottles or cans…I count them beforehand. They ask me how many I have, I tell ’em, they hand me the money and I’m outta there in under 2 minutes. I’ve never had them weigh what I’ve brought in.

And while it’s horribly inconvenient to not be able to buy anything I want whenever I want, I think stores would open later if they thought there was a need for it. But if it’s just one twit coming in at 3:00am, it’s hardly worth paying staff and paying for lights, etc. to keep the store open. Simple economics – no great conspiracy.

Buy your booze when the store is open, or make your own if you can’t wait till the store opens in the morning.

  24. OP is right, and Kay is right. This province is as ass-backwards as they come. My biggest beef is with NS Power, but I’ll save that for another day….

Fucking NS. I don’t even want to try anymore.

  25. Anyone ever got off work at 2 am & gone grocery shopping ?
I have..its fucking GREAT ! the place is quiet, there are only a few other customers, any time I’ve gone. Its a nice convenient time to leisurely browse the aisles .

  26. The issue of privatization of liquour sales is a valid one. I agree that it IS a little strange to have to be served a bottle of alcohol by an employee on the public payroll.

We have had privatized liquor sales in AB and QC for quite some time, and I have not witnessed the downfall of society. In fact, I do agree that it can be more convenient. (Poor selection and tacky signage, however, has become a bit of a drag, but that is just my obscure tastes. But I digress.)

However, the OP was bitching about the store closing at 10:00 pm. I have a difficult time mustering up sympathy for him regarding this “problem.”

Unless he is a shift worker, I can’t see why he can’t drop by the liquor store, or any other store, during normal business hours. And stock up in advance, if it’s that important to have whatever you need on hand in the middle of the night.

  27. The comments I made were, yes, made at 11:00 after I came home from the bar, not having had anything to drink, and thinking to myself “wouldn’t it be nice for me and my GF to continue our good time at home.” And wouldn’t it? People who own private liquor stores in AB, where I spent the previous 23 years of my life, know that between 9:00pm and 2:00am are prime time business. If they close at 10 they go out of business. How many time have I gotten off of work at 10:30 and my pals and I just want to have a few beer and play some cards. YOU DON’T PLAN FOR THAT SHIT! you know what I mean — spontaneous desire for a good time. I love Canada and I can appreciate a little socialism now and again. But I conclude that Government regulated liquor: Sucks. Government regulated health care: Good.
p.s. I’m not a drunk, and I’m not frightened of late night liquor stores destroying humanity.

  28. More:
A few questions- Why is having booze available in convenience stores a sign of civilized society? I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with having it available that way, but I just don’t get the connection between readily available booze and civilization?

I haven’t travelled to other parts of Canada, so I don’t have the experience of finding liquor in conveninece stores anywhere else in this country, but I have in the States, and mostly, they only have beer and wine, no hard liquor. That still doesn’t solve the OP’s problem of getting whiskey if we went that route and did a similar thing.

As for 24 hour grocery stores, you say yourself that there’s hardly anyone in them at 2 in the morning, wouldn’t that suggest there’s not a whole lot of need for having stores open 24/7? Look at Walmart’s recent decision to not be 24 hours anymore. I bet they found there wasn’t much profit in it.

I would think that if there was a profit to be had in having liquor stores open later, they would do it, there’s nothing stopping them as the shopping hour laws have been greatly relaxed. You can buy liquor on Sunday now, when you couldn’t before.

I think the OP’s belief that this is a babysitting tactic by the government to reduce drinking is over-reacting to the situation. It’s merely an inconvenience to some, just like any other set store hours, there will always be someone who can’t get into whatever store at a time of their choosing.

  29. It’s just the status quo. Not enough people complain, so nothing gets done. The gov’t really doesn’t care that much, they just aren’t going to invest the time and energy into solving a problem that doesn’t need fixing. I suspect if you generated enough publicity and discussion over it, it wouldn’t be too hard to find support for the privatization of liquor sales. The government would still collect it’s share of the taxes on booze and would ultimately collect more revenue because of the increased “spontaneous” liquor sales. The government isn’t out to rob you of choice.

  30. I stock my fridge/bar for just such an occasion, Poochurney, ’cause you never know when friends might drop by or I’ll be awake enough after a gig to feel like a drink, or have a shitty day at the day job and want a shot… you *can* actually “PLAN FOR THAT SHIT! “. People do it all the time.

I have been to liquor stores after midnight, and frankly, I feel safer going through the drivethrough in Burnside.

  31. Actually, TDF, Walmart’s decision to not be 24 hours wasn’t because there wasn’t profit in it, but that there was only profit at *one* of the 24 hour stores, therefore since they couldn’t justify having *multiple* stores open 24 hours, they chose to have them all go back to”‘regular” hours.

Kinda like “I can’t make a basket 100% of the time, so I’m going to stop playing basketball”. I’m not saying it makes sense, but there you have it, huge corporate at its finest. 🙂

  32. BAFIDIS, lol!! Nice one, Dr. F. Between that and your Bel Biv Devoe comment on the BEP thread, you’re slaying me today.

  33. The NSLC is a MAJOR source of revenue for the gov’t, which is what all the resistance to privatization is all about. Nobody Nowhere said it… the business they would do between 9-2AM would more than justify the costs to open late but what about the cost to change the law? Is this still “a problem that doesn’t need fixing”? Nah, just add another 2% onto provincial sales tax. It’s so much easier to screw Nova Scotians that way.

  34. ^And yet another skillful avoidance of the fact that she has been proven wrong on multiple counts in the same thread. We should all start calling Kay Kleopatra instead, because she IS the queen of denial.

  35. Re: 24-hour shopping

Back in the 1990s, there was a huge trend towards 24-hour shopping. The belief was that there were so many people on unconventional schedules that 24-hour everything was viable.

In bigger cities, this is definitely true. In Halifax, however, we just don’t have the numbers to make most 24-hour stores profitable.

In SOME stores, it makes sense to be open all night: pharmacies, convenience stores, etc. but a lot of other stores have tried it and it just didn’t bring in the customers they thought it would. (Or in some cases brought in only a very strange kind of customer.)

Grocery stores, Wal-Mart, etc. . . . it really depends on the location. Later-night grocery shopping I adore, and I admit that I used to be one of those students using the colour printers in Kinko’s after midnight . . . but I just can’t imagine going to Wal-Mart to pick up, oh I don’t know, a lamp? A plastic container? School supplies? in the middle of the night. I guess it all depends on the person and what they need.

I have noticed that many stores who have tried the 24-hour approach have scaled back, with many now closing at 10:00pm, 11:00pm or midnight. I guess the customer traffic just wasn’t there. If it was I am sure they would have stayed open.

  36. Re: 24hour grocery stores going back to regular hours.

Now, if only we could get them to start giving us fucking bags again…

  37. I try Me0w. Not surprisingly, kay neither responded or acknowledged to my suggestion of her wholly incorrect statement of Canada being: “the highest taxed nation in the world”. But that’s beside the point, and totally off topic.

With my experience, even staying open the few extra hours for a big retailer can make or break a day’s sales, private or otherwise. I mean, for Sobey’s to stay open it’s fine, because on a general level, they make a tonne of money over the run of the day, so to pay the approx. 3 employees for the 6 hours they “work” overnight, it’s a pittance, and they still sell enough of the high profit stuff to make it worth their while. Not knowing what the liquor store profit margins are, I can only assume that it’s not worth their while for even one store to stay open overnight. Not to mention too, it’s probably a union issue.

  38. y’know, rules don’t just magically stop existing when you turn a certain age or move out of your parents’ house.

  39. WELL, I GUESS NO ONE IS SAFE HERE TO MAKE A COMMENT AGAINST A CIVIC INSTITUTION. I SEE THE COURTS GAVE THE GO AHEAD TO OPEN THEN COAST’S FILES. NOW, ALL US DISENTERS ARE AT RISK OF BEING CHARGED UNDER SOME INANE LAWS, THAT PROTECT THE LAZY, BIGOTED, FAT ASSED SON OF BITCHES THAT ARE IN POWER IN THIS PROVINCE. SO, I GUESS THIS WILL BE THE LAST FORUM AND COMMENTS THAT YOU WILL SEE HERE IN THIS PAPER ONLINE. EITHER THAT, OR FACE THE WRATH OF THE COURTS. GUESS WHAT I SAY TO THEM, GO FUCK YOURSELVES, YOU WANNA CHARGE ME, GO FOR IT, I’LL MAKE SO MUCH MEDIA CIRCUS, YOU ASS WILL STILL BE SPINNING 10 YEARS FROM NOW. THIS IS FUCKING CANADA, WHERE WE ARE SPOSED TO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH(OF ALL KINDS) AND ALSO FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. TAKE AWAY EVEN A TINY BIT OF THAT, AND IT’S LIKE THE COAST SAYING THAT WE CAN’T SAY CUNT. IT IS SOMETHING MY PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS FOUGHT FOR, IF YOU DENY ME OR ANYONE ELSE, THE RIGHT TO BE A CRITIC TO GOVERNMENT OR ANYONE ELSE THAT WARRENTS IT. IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE, STAND TALL. BUT IF STICKS AND STONES GET TO HURT YOU, THEN YOU DON’T BELONG IN THIS COUNTRY. GO THE FUCK SOMEPLACE ELSE WITH YOUR MARXIST FUCKING ATTITUDES AND THOUGHT CONTROL. WELL TO THE WORLD OF 1984, ORWELL WAS OFF BY A FEW YEARS.

  40. Hey TDF
I used civilized society, because when those individuals who are against alcohol sales through a freemarket system…when they speak out about it, they always play the distruction of family values, drucken debauchery the end of the World as we know it…if alcohol is sold outside of liquor stores…we would never (civilization itself) survive such a wild crazy horrific idea, like corner store alcohol sales ! ! !
Government somehow keep us much safer L O L , & who doesn’t love their wonderful mark up is at least 3, 4, 500% on every product (my last visit to Texas, 40 ouncers of Captain Morgan was $9.99 cents !) & that’s considered an Imported Rum down there !

So that’s why I posted it that way…it is being done elsewhere & that part of the world has yet to self destruct…if your really offended by my opinions, please hire a lawyer & get the Coast to release my identity via my IP address, which although I could have a ever constantly changing address, I really don’t give a flying fuck & unlike some I’m not afraid of courtrooms…they did away with the death penalty, so the worse they can do to you now is lock you up & feed, cloth & house you..the way Government is mismanaging everything & we’re in massive deficit spending & being taxed into the ground, I’m going to need someone to feed & cloth & shelter me before much longer anyway . So it would be doing me a favor.

  41. fuck it i am going to stay here and cause trouble with a capital T…ya hear that giant fucking spineless head(s), let the games begin. this is my playground and aint nobody gonna spoil my fun

  42. You are having right idea Girl of Pain. In my country ve have saying: Voman who vash carrot and peas in same pot is filthy pig and deserve to work as prostitutki in Uzbek village for rest of life. I am not sure what this mean but it make great sense the night ve drink brake fluid from T-62 tank and burn down Tibor’s father’s dacha. They have made enemy today and like Cossack ve shall never forget or forgive.

  43. LIFE SUCKS: YOU STILL HAVE FREE SPEECH AND THE RIGHT TO SAY WHATEVER YOU WANT ABOUT WHOEVER YOU WANT BUT IF YOU SAY SOMETHING ABOUT SOMEONE, THAT PERSON HAS A RIGHT TO CHALLENGE WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THEM.

  44. I was at an awesome restaurant in the Italian section of Montreal, when we asked to see the wine list they didn’t have one. We were told to go to the corner store across the street and bring back whatever we wanted. It was awesome. But not half as awesome as being able to get a 6-pack at the gas station, or grocery store….

  45. see ya see the bitch is my crack, i can’t get through the day without some mr. ivan, sucks, zZz, ttfn et al

  46. I hear ya Painey. i quit in February because I was taking a particular thread, the site and myself way too seriously. The first 2 are never good, the last is unforgivable. So I pitched a hissy fit and flounced out never to return but I got bored and as Jay put it in Clerks 2, “Boredom is the first step on the road to relapse.” So I will leave you with the emetic effects of picturing me with my junk tucked up between my cheeks, dancing around naked and lip-synching to “GoodBye Horses”

  47. ivan, comrade, it won’t be long npow til all the rabble rousers are outed and shipped off to the goulags. but as frosty says, fuck em. if i got a valid bitch on some government asshole, then they will get it. same as this bullshit about new hunting zones, there’s gonna be a lot more deaths this year, if they change them. and on the news, gee, wild animals in your backyard, wow, whoda thunk that one, where the fuck else they gobnna go to. when their habitat is being cleared more and more daily.hope the fucking screwballs that are government, are ready to deal with a lot of lawsuits on account of these ideas, that are really stupid. but more rabblings later, cranky, you are so wrong about free speech in this country. try calling the queen a cunt, or a bitch, like i just did anywhere else.

  48. Ivan, I always found the “nomenclature confusion” portion of Clerks 2 always enlightening.

  49. Not as good as the first one Dr., but it had some great moments, like that one. And Sucks, I’m with you. I stand by every statement I’ve ever made here, even the bald-faced lies, hell, ESPECIALLY THE BALD-FACED LIES! Any twat wants to sue me, they stand to get about $27.00, a couple of tubes of Testors airplane glue and well perused stack of every Celebrity Skin that ever had Kate Winslet pix. And they’ll look awfully goddam stupid doing it. And in the worst case scenario, my lawyer will use “The Chewbacca Defense”

  50. how many people read the bitch on line? i don’t think we need to duck and cover or be breaking out the tinfoil chapeaus. arrest the pope now

  51. More:

Offense? Nope, not offended. You’re one of the few people on this board that I actually tend to agree with on a regular basis. Just wanted more clarification as to what you meant by “civilized”. It seemed odd to me that a marker of civilized society could be the ease and availability of alcohol.

Also, the 24 hour shopping thing, if it’s so quiet in those hours, where’s the profit for the business, except maybe for the reasons Dr. Fever stated. I doubt most businesses could survive those hours, there’s only a handful that could, and I’m not convinced the LC is one of them.

  52. True enough PG, but its easy to be defiant on the internet and I guess that’s what I like so much about it. Just sitting here, drinking a beer, being defiant. I used to work with a guy who was always boasting “They’d never get me to serve in the army” Now, he was pushing 50, a type 1 diabetic, nearsighted and all of 4ft. 6″. I asked him, “What bloody army would have you? You couldn’t even get press-ganged into a West African child militia fer Chrissake.” Didn’t matter. The strongest held principles are the ones you’ll never have to defend. And FUCK YOU nuns who abused my old man.

  53. Actually I asked that & was told that there are some stores that do all their stocking of shelves at night. As well as cleaning. So seeing as there are already people in the stores working, having 2 or 3 more on actually selling stuff was what I was told was the rational behind it.
I’ve never worked in retail…& I have no idea what its like, what the night time shift actually does, to be quite frank, I’m not much of a people person. I also like to sit back & chill out after work & for me to come home or stay at a friends & have a few drinks at 3 – 4 -5am is actually normal. I can’t just come home from a show like tearing out a concert & just go to bed. You’ve been working flat out as fast as you can & I’m too wound up to just go to bed. Plus there’s my problem with sleeping when I’m dirty…I’ve got no problem crawling around in shit if it has to be done, but when I’m finished I have to shower & a shower wakes me up even more.
But I personally believe the NSLC should be abolished & all the independant corner stores should be allowed to sell beer, wine, & spirits. But only to persons 19 & older…if they can be trusted to sell tobacco, they IMO can be trusted to sell booze…& you watch & see if prices don’t drop.

  54. Poorchuny, why don’t you just keep booze/beer in the fridge at all times? Just fuckin stock up when you buy your damn groceries! Every supermarket fuckin has a liquor commission built right in! Do you see how that works?

Man, you AB and ONT cats know how to whine. Toughen up and smarten up.

  55. My Grampy says that in the 60s you walked up to the counter at the NSLC and told them what you wanted to buy. There was nothing you could see or touch at the ‘public’ side of the store. The clerk went to a back room and brought out what you asked for. Hours may have been 10 till 5, weekdays. Period.

It’s come a long way……we’re almost half way to civilized now…..almost……………..kinda.

  56. I usually don’t have 100$ on hand to “stock up.” I use that money to buy food. Also, when I buy beer or liquor I usually buy it to drink it, not to have it adorn my mantel until I feel good a fit to drink. Boore, do you but two bottles of whiskey at a time. One to drink and the other to feel good about. I wouldn’t be so bitchy if there was a decent place to drink around here outside of the 20 square blocks you call down town.

  57. thanks paingirl. I’ve been pretty absent lately… going through some tough life shit.
coming back to this is kinda perturbing… but I’m with ya.
I’ll still be here causing shit and mucking it up.

If anything, I can always spoof the ip and feel just as free as before.

  58. Poochurney come over to Dartmouth, use the ferry because vewry close by…
Just half a block up Portland Street on the same side as the Royal Bank (but not that far up the street) is a little friendly hole in the wall, it used to be called The Sternwheeler, it’s name still starts with an ‘S’ but there’s only 4 letters & the beer is cheap , the draft even cheaper, the patrons are an eclectic clientel to say the least & at some of the cheapest beer prices in all Metroeach & everyday, you just drink until you’ve made a profit over more expensive watering holes & then take a cab back to Hellifax with the savings ~:)

  59. The gov will never privatize booze. why would they? It is a major cash cow for them.

OP If the ways of N. S. bug you so much, why do you stay here? Why do you not leave? Vegas sounds like your kind of town. Move there please!

  60. Don’t need to move to Vegas – move to virtually any state, and some provinces, and you can get beer and wine at
ANY corner store, as late as the corner store decides to stay open for.
