  7. Orange pineapple rocks! (particularly from the local “scottish” dairy). Grapenut I agree kinda sucks, but don’t you dare say a word about that beautiful “scots” orange pineapple tasty yumminess!

    Tiger-stripe is my shameful pleasure. So nasty, but so good!

  9. we used to go swimming at the y, where i don’t know (too long ago) afterward we had kones from the diary queen. i assokiate that smell with khlorine…either/or i love swimming

    Shame about the Spring Garden DQ closing. Only DQ still makes a milkshake with real milk products but boy do you pay through the nose for it!

  13. I’ve been falling more and more in love with gelato….mmmmmmm DAMN GOOD STUFF! I can’t find it at sobeys/stupidstore anymore, at least, not the ones I frequent anyway. Anyone on here know where one could get a tub of it aside from some specialty shop that will charge a premium for it?

If you happen to find yourself in Bedford, True North Diner makes kick-ass milkshakes…REAL milkshakes…the ones made in the stainless steel cups…they give you a large glass PLUS the extra in the cup (love when they do that) so it’s almost like you’re getting 2 shakes! Food is pretty decent too.

  16. Oh I love the old diner-style milkshakes made in the stainless cup rigs. There are still a few around. (True North Diner, noted.)

    Those stainless steel milkshake machines remind me of the old bus station on Agricola, back when they still had a 50’s style lunch counter. The food was pretty hurtin but the chocolate milkshakes were pretty darn good.

  18. Definately worth a checking-out, Deeker/Paingirl. It’s located in the old Ponderosa location in Bedford Place Mall. Complete with a working vintage 1956 Wurlitzer juke box. Good spot.

  20. Here’s a fun experiment: take a 2 liter container of cheap ice cream from the grocery store, let it melt completely. Observe the water content. Say eww.

    While I understand the Canadian minimal pus content milk is more expensive by comparison to US dairies, the price of Cows is just ridiculous. Scotsburn is much more reasonable and a pretty good compromise being almost real ice cream.

    The one that really gets me is Breyers. When it first came out it was real ice cream. I loved it, it had labout four ingredients, cream being #1. A few years later they caved to the market and started producing that watery crap with an ingredient list as long as your arm. Didn’t lower the price though. I wonder how that worked out at the bottom line for them?

  22. Same thing with chicken strips and the like. The water content and filler content is through the roof … all with very little chicken.

  23. The best chicken fingers are homemade — just take chicken breasts (boneless/skinless) and dip them in either some egg or some canola oil and roll them in some crushed soda crackers that have a bit of salt and bbq spice (a bit of curry powder works too!).

    Bake until cooked through, but still moist and mmmmmmm!

    Grapenut – Never, ever, make Moose Milk with grapenut icecream (lesson learned).

    Gelato – Italian Market at Young & Kempt. Can’t vouch for the quality though.

    Deeker – Only way I’d let my Dark Chocolate Velvet melt, is by accident.

  26. Is the Haagen Das sold here made with Canadian Milk or does it all come from the same place in the US? I would think it would all come from the same place, so the prices shouldn’t be that different.

  27. avast0 – You can get delicious gelato from the Foxhill Cheese House. They have a store-front shop at the seaport farmers market….it’s very good quality.

    They use their own non-homogenized milk to make it, from grass-fed cows! They have several flavours too! You can buy small tubs or just get a scoop. I believe the tubs cost around $6.75.

  29. Thanks for the gelato info, Granolabear. Much appreciated. I have had Foxhill gelato before during a visit to the valley and loved it. Regretted not getting a tub of it at that time, but I had no idea they had a shop at the farmer’s market. I will DEFINATELY be picking some up. Cheers.:)

    Grace: I guess there is no accounting for some tastes, eh? I would probably try the cheese and spaghetti one just to say I did and I don’t suspect the squid ink variety would be too bad either. (I’ve had squid ink before in a paella dish in Barcelona…it’s basically just a food colourant…there was no flavour to it) but…um…raw horse flesh?….I’ll (gag) pass (gag) ty

  30. Apparently the Humani-T Cafe on Young and Agricola has wonderful gelato. I just bought the Team Buy for there – 2 med gelato and a pint of take home for $7. I’m looking forward to using it this weekend!

  34. Best Gelato/Ice Cream in the city by far is at Humani-T Cafe on Young ST. I’m surprised only one person has mentioned them so far especially when talking about Halifax and Gelato in one sentence.

  35. ANYTHING in America that is fattening and unhealthy is cheaper and at greater variety. That’s why they look the way they do.

  36. …and canadians are catching up. I regularly travel through various parts of ‘Merica and the percentage of obese people I see there doesn’t strike me as being dramatically higher than what I see here. I’ve witnessed some weird and disgusting eating habits, though (such as drinking pop with breakfast at 8 am).
