Why is it that we can’t claim our rent as a tax deduction is such a shitty province? You can in Ontario and it results in a much bigger tax return. Not sure about the other provinces. —Any Answers?

  1. This year I’m claiming 105 Senators, 308 Members of Parliament, and every Public Sector Trade Union member in the country as dependents. If Revenue Canada disallows my return I’ll ask back:
“Who the hell did I miss?”

  2. I know at least a dozen people in the last 5 years who’ve shaken the dust of N.S. off their boots and, honestly, I can’t blame them. When a 67 year old single woman with severe health problems uproots and leaves here for B.C. after a life-time of being in N.S., you’ve got to wonder.

I love this province but detest the cost of living here.

  3. You can only claim rent in ontario if you’re making almost poverty level as your income. You can still claim it of course, but it only makes a difference if your considered low-income there… I think low income by ontario standards is 50K a year or something thought (sarcasm). Seriously, last time I lived there I made between 50-80 K / year and could never claim rent… looked into it and I would basically have to be destitute before it would help me any…

  4. Sure you can op, if you use your brain.

Take on a few contract jobs doing whatever you do best. Work from home.

    voila.

  5. if you have space that is used for business purposes ONLY ( so don’t be trying to do this with the corner of your living room ), you can right off a portion of your rent, heat, lights, etc.

  6. g.v., sorry dude, that won’t work out so good. i tried claiming part of my apt. last year as a home business, even tho i was actually doing a commercial thing. it was disallowed on the grounds that at least 51% had to be used.
yeah, go figure that a crook politition would figure out a way to suck more money out of our pockets in one way or another. the tax man is probly a good friend of theirs too, so that helps. when you got money, you can buy fucking near anyone. and it seems they all have tons of it, wonder where it came from. methinks that there are many black/gray projects that should be looked into a lot more than they are. where did the ships money go? has anyone actually seen or heard of a dollar coming here yet. everything will be overpriced anyway. just another typical day in the political neighborhood.

  7. Great Value; Its really not that easy. Listen to Life Sucks, he got it right. I recommend Google for you right now, I’m not reiterating my knowledge of the subject but would rather you post your reference for that made up claim.

  8. Great Value; So true, I was not looking for a debate either. We have argued in the past though, lol. Its just that if you don’t actually know about something, don’t pretend that you do and make false statements. It makes you look silly, but if you felt you were right, I’m sure the response wouldn’t have been so polite.

  9. I’m from Ontario and recently moved to Halifax. Completely in love with this province. I’m happy to pay slightly higher taxes to have my roads regularly cleaned, etcetera. This province WORKS. You can’t beat the neighborly vibe here either. Trust me, the political conservatism in Ontario has a trickle-down effect and it turns the populace into assholes over time. Well, that’s if the chicken came before the egg…

No idea where you got this idea about claiming your rent in Ontario.

  10. I recently moved to Ontario and you can claim your rent. As ustwess explained, the actual return is dependant on your income level. And Black and Tan, you got it, its nice to have a change of scenery and experience another province, but the Maritimes are where its at.

  11. Just did some online calculations with CRA, and after paying $10,800 in rent, I qualify for a $53 return. Not a very big return…….

  12. i found that the calculations involved in figuring out what percentage of my oil, electricity (can’t claim my mortgage payments) is for my home office took more of my accountant’s $$ time than the return would be. you don’t get to ‘write off’ the actual amounts. it’s a percentage then some fool percentage of that. a piddling amount, yes sonic, like $53 from 10K in rent. just not worth it. i was hoping to claim 100% of one of my internet connections, because i have a separate one just for work, but they wouldn’t go for that either. WTH it’s still bliss to work from home so i shut up about it.
