Seriously Halifax, I’m fuckin’ done. I have a solid resume and I’m not asking for the moon and the stars. I’ve even applied for jobs that pay minimum wage or not much more. I have gotten one call back out of about 50 applications I have filled out in the last couple months. I don’t apply for things job that I’m not qualified for, I’m not shooting for a really high salary, I just want to keep bill collectors at bay. I REALLY don’t want to take a $10 per hour job but I’m willing. I just don’t think they want me. I’m overqualified. These places want people with no other option but to work in that type of position. For the last 12 months it’s been like this, trying to get ahead. Even when I do get a job there’s no security and companies will think nothing of firing someone if they’re not where they want them to be at the 90 day mark, even if the person is making progress and had ZERO prior experience. Even people who have gone to school gotten training, all that stuff have had to leave or accept much less than they would get anywhere else, for the most part. Unless you want to work with the old and sick (far from everyone’s cup of tea) there is no future here.  When you have someone who has been working his whole adult life that can’t even get a job there is a problem. I can’t wait to get the fuck out of here I HATE IT! —Halifax Sucks

  1. Don’t aim too high as your bitch is lacking in grammar and sentence structure. Muster those skills and maybe these employers would take a look at your resume.

Oh well, don’t scald yourself on the fryer when you do get an offer.

  2. You probably need to work on your cover letter.

And I’m betting your resume has grammatical mistakes…. Having a well written cover letter and resume is more than just content… Style and the ability to write properly is just as important. I’m not trying to be an asshole here, I’m trying to help. I had to read sentences in your bitch over because your writing was confusing. I’m guessing it’s the same with your resume/cover letter and employers aren’t going to take the time to do that when there’s a stack of 50 or 100 well written applications sitting beside them.

You could likely benefit from a consultation from Job Junction on Mumford.

  3. Sad thing is that most people I know who would move / want to move can’t even afford to save up enough money to get out of here. Its like Nova Scotia is one giant credit card company – they entice you to stay, get you more and more in debt, charge you more and more fees, drain you, find your breaking point and then they own you. You can’t leave, you cant move, you can’t get a better job, you cant save. You become owned by this hole of a province. Good riddance? Good luck opening the door.

  4. you could always get a greasy job in alberta. pretty kitten…who cares about the person’s lack of ability to write. It seems only small minded people care about grammar.

  5. Whatever. I’ve gotten a call back from every resume I have put out, and been able to pick and choose what job I want. Of course, I have 20 years experience. I’m doing great. Good job, New car, savings and will be buying a new house next year. Why would anyone want to leave this little slice of heaven?

  6. What? No. Educated people (who aren’t lazy) care about grammar. Thinking like that is what’s wrong with kids these days. OMGWTFLOLLL

  7. Baby.doll — i’m in HR and trust me: people who send in poorly written applications are usually thrown out when there’s a stack of well written applications. Not having a well written app shows lack of detail and laziness to most employers, or a lack of intelligence (sad, but I’ve heard employers say this). I’ve had department heads tell me they throw out applications with even one typo. That’s a bit extreme, but competition is tough in the job market these days.

Also: SHITTY — your writing is decent, so I doubt your resume is the shitz.

  8. good riddance you bum. 50 applications in a few months is pathetic. Try doing 10 applications per day or buy a ticket to Fort Mac.

  9. I have no idea why I love Halifax so much, it must be the people. I WANT to live here but the tax, shrinking job market, gentrification etc are really getting to be a problem.

I couldn’t agree more with ustwes, I do feel that way sometimes – and the credit card companies that own us are Sobeys, Irving and NSP … but like I said, I love this city for some inexplicable reason and I’d rather stay and try to make it better than leave and give up. I’ve got some fight left in me.

Sometimes, though, Montreal looks pretty good. (Not you MM)!

  10. I’m in HR too – way too many years (insert all catbert jokes here; that never gets old). Grammar et all definitely matter. NS has many well educated and talented people – quite often it comes down to the small differentiators. As well – I chose to leave the province for a long time to get the experience I needed – but come back when I could b/c I love this place. OP might need to do the same – or enjoy your mcjob and quit complaining.

  11. i don’t know pretty kitten..maybe it’s just your lack of ability to understand things, and than blame it on the grammar! (i didn’t have to reread any part, completely comprehensible) Are you the ‘english’ version of the grammar police! lol, cut the poor guy some slack, sounds to me like he’s definitely trying!

  12. I get the whole “can’t even afford to leave” scenario – but only for certain situations.

If you’re young with a university degree (of any kind) and no dependents then why not consider teaching ESL overseas ie) South Korea??

Sure, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but if you’re just looking for a way out of debt it’s a viable option.

  13. If you are applying to a lot of different jobs in different fields then you should have different resumes. Helps avoid the ‘over qualified’ classification. I think I had 5 different resumes going at one point (a professional, a waitressing, a customer service etc etc) and I think the max it took me to find something was 2 months. You shouldn’t put fake things on a resume, but that doesn’t mean you have to put everything you’ve ever done on there either.

Also – for the professional resume – I agree with the other comments suggesting that you have an expert take a look at it. More than one expert actually, since you have the time.

  14. Two resumes

1 for jobs that you’re extremely overqualified for

2 for jobs that you’re somewhat overqualified for

Let me know how it works out.

  15. OP

I’ve had to get pushy before and ask to talk to the manager without even mentioning a resume, and then give it to them. Eventually the third place I did this at hired me. This was years ago though.

  16. I never said he wasn’t trying, baby.doll, but I also do professional editing and have for years with wonderful performance reviews, and in my professional opinion, his writing is bungled and needs some work. If you think grammar and the ability to write clearly doesn’t matter than you have no sweet clue. Fact: employers will usually disregard poorly written applications in favour of well written ones, especially since this is an employer’s market.

That’s why I suggested Job Junction. They have wonderful staff who are professionally trained to edit and help write resumes and cover letters that won’t get chucked because they are poorly written.

Are YOU the ob, baby.doll? You sure sound touchy about simple constructive criticism regarding this bitch. Would explain why you think its writing style is legit.

Also: as mentioned, two resumes are crucial.

  17. Nah i never post this, petty kitty, i don’t have to work lol 😛 … I just think you shouldn’t discriminate someone on the basis of JUST writing/grammar. I get that NS is a backwards province, but still lighten up a bit. PEACE!

  18. ” i don’t have to work lol 😛 “

Lemmie guess: 5 kids, 5 different baby daddies, 1 SUV-sized stroller, 1 recycled metro transit transfer you pray to GOD is the right colour for whatever day you drag your spawn out in public, and 1 government cheque every 30 days.

  19. Higgs, seriously don’t.
You don’t know how good you have it…
even with Rob Ford, you’re better off there.

Enjoy Canada’s Wonderland, your lower rent, electric, taxes, food, and gas costs…
cause we’re drowning in our own feces out here.

  20. If you’re not super amazing, you won’t get a job here. Halifax has so many educated and talented people, you need something that makes you stand out. If it’s not working here, then bugger off and go get one of those greasy jobs in the Great West every dude in sweat pants on the 80 goes on about. Fuck. I just don’t get it. Move.

  21. Yes, grammar, that’s it. Thousands of young people, many of them with fancy expensive educations, leave our province every year because they all have bad grammar, and apparently don’t know how to use spellcheck, not because there is a lack of opportunity.. Right.

Moving out of town costs a lot of money too, I’ve done it and it’s not something I’d be prepared to do again without at least a few thousand saved. I’d have to find a place, furnish it, and be able to live for a while just in case I can’t get a job right away. People can’t just move without having anything. Any other brilliant suggestions?

  22. how could you have a ‘solid’ CV if you have never been able to gain or keep a suitable job? re 90 days training cut-off, that’s pretty generous. i doubt it’s for position in an OR.
and as someone who routinely had to wade through 100’s of applications, damn right i would round file anything with typos, poor grammar and spelling errors. sloppy app = slopper worker. the resume would never get read if the cover was crummy

  23. “how could you have a ‘solid’ CV if you have never been able to gain or keep a suitable job?”

I’m sorry.. where does it say that in the bitch? Care to point that out?

Of course resumes with bad grammar and spelling mistakes will get set aside, rightfully so, but what if OPs resume is flawless? Any other ways you can come up with to blame an individual for the lack of opportunity in this province? Do you really think that resume writing is the problem, not that young people have a hard time competing with the older, more established and experienced people in this province, like Stevie Boy with his 20 years?

No disrespect to SHITD but he helps make my point. It’s a rough go here for young people, even ones with credentials who are willing to work.

  24. kids need to get jobs at 14, pad that resume and whatever you’re hired to do, do it well

  25. Some but not all TJ902. I’m still pretty young and I have an OK (not what I want to do forever but not flipping burgers) job and have for several years. I’m not uncomfortable. At this time of year, the job market is flooded with students of various age/level of experience. There also isn’t much demand for seasonal employment. (Between Xmas and Tourist Season). A rough time to be pounding the pavement. Hang in there, OP!

And yes, Halifax could improve it’s prospects…we’ve got one of the largest harbors in the world and are closer to Europe, geographically, than 98% of North America. That’s a pretty decent head start. Premier Joseph Howe warned us about the pitfalls of confederation and he was right in a lot of ways.

  26. Depeche Mel, Enough

I’m going to have to then, if given what you say is true, criticize the “talented” workers around here for a lack of leadership in taking in and training people for the sake of helping someone. They must be too good to be held back huh? The 3 month training period is meant to be a TRAINING PERIOD. Even if the person ends up 80% as good as his or her trainer, that trainer has no right to be in a leadership position if he or she sees this as a reason to fire the potential employee. The dog eat dog attitude IS NOT how it is. I hope you aren’t as egotistical as some of these idiots you’re talking about.

You have got to be joking.

  27. >I’m sorry.. where does it say that in the bitch? Care to point that out?

it’s the point of the bitch. the entire bitch was a complaint about no call backs, or unsuitable, low level jobs or being let go. that string of uckiness does not a ‘solid’ resume make.

  28. Maybe I’m slipping but I didn’t think the bitch was badly written. It was certainly comprehensable and succinct. Somebody point out the grammatical errors for me so I can see where some of you are coming from.
Reminds me of the old grammarian joke.
    Q Where’s your grammar?
A In the kitchen constructing morphology and syntex.
He he That joke never gets old.

  29. Maybe OB would benefit from adding an education to his credentials. You have experience, but no formal training. Try a program with a co op component to build references given how your last couple jobs ended and you’d be set.

And it NEVER hurts to have a job councellor edit your resume and cover letter.

Heck, I’d be more than willing to edit your applications and apply for some jobs because I have a background in hiring.

You know how to get a hold of me, dude.

  30. Molly:

It says “for the last 12 months it’s been like this”

OP’s had a rough year. We don’t know how old he is. I don’t see how you can conclude that he’s never held a job. But, I’m not surprised to see you drawing your own conclusions.. again.

He says he has a solid resume. I bet you skim through those applications without really reading them too, like you did this bitch, apparently.

  31. Get some ‘networking’ going. Ask friends, family members, and check out any kind of job fairs. Sadly, I don’t think I have ever gained employment without knowing someone who knows someone. Sucks when that’s what it comes to a lot of the time, but it’s just the way it is.

I agree with the other replies too… have a couple different resumes for different types of jobs and have someone other than the Microsoft Paperclip (“It looks like you are trying to write a resume…”) help you write them. Asking for a manager (ie. person who does the employing) while applying and getting some face time can really help too.

    Good luck!

  32. Aw i remember those days.. when i got that reality check that right out of school you start at the bottom.

Op, the only people who get their dream job right out of school are usually geniuses. The rest of us have to work our way up.

  33. I’m doing fine op. I put in my time.

If your resume does not contain work experience, you are a liability. You need several years of mediocre work experience to prove you’re serious.

  34. Oh em eff gee does ANYBODY read the bitch in its entirety before they comment?!

Crayons, it specifically says that he is willing to woe for minimum wage. He is not asking for a “dream job” he has applied for crappy service jobs.

    Gaaaawwwwhhd…..

  35. This thread made me realize how many posters use this website as nothing more than a way to feel better about themselves.

  36. No, Crayons. Most people who get their dream job right after graduation are not geniuses at all, but rather individuals with mommy-daddy connections.

  37. PK

Grammar school industrial complex. I’ll post Ayn Rand’s warning but she probably wouldn’t let me. She’d be mad ad the reading comprehension of the people hiring.

You are correct though. Sounding smart is the situation to get a job (as is the state of our culture; everybody needs to proove that they are 3% better than the next person). As sad as it might be.

  38. “Op, the only people who get their dream job right out of school are usually geniuses.” _ Thanks Crayons! I do what I can…

“No, Crayons. Most people who get their dream job right after graduation are not geniuses at all, but rather individuals with mommy-daddy connections.” – Fuck you, Milk n Juice! The Captain supports himself!

“This thread made me realize how many posters use this website as nothing more than a way to feel better about themselves.” – Or feel worse about themselves. Especially since they inevitably end comparing themselves to The Captain, which is usually the most effective way to knock your self-esteem down a couple of pegs.

“…everybody needs to proove that they are 3% better than the next person…” – Why is it sad that people are competing to be smarter than the next person? I think you’re just upset that the ‘competition’ has losers. Of course you want to sound smart in an interview! Would you rather sound average and have the employer hire you because they think you’re probably a really nice guy/gal on the inside?

If it’s not working, try harder! If that doesn’t work, you’re obviously oblivious to something. There are minimum wage jobs in this city, and unless you’re a completely undesirable troll, you can go get them. You could have been working at McDicks or StupidStore for the last year instead of sitting on your hands. So who honestly thinks, provided the OB has been honest in their post, that the OB would have a hard time finding a min. wage job with a fast food restaurant or similar employer?

  39. I feel inadequate around the Captain.
His superlative narcissism trumps my awkward semi-inferiority complex.

Semi… only because I know I’m better than Montrealshithead.

  40. Just a couple of notes..

“In the kitchen constructing morphology and syntex.”
Dammit that should read syntAx, what a way to ruin a classic joke!

    “Grammar school industrial complex.”
Shhh Daniel, not too loud, the walls have ears. These people are considered to be responsible for the JFK assassination. Not one but three dangling prepositions during his famous Berlin speech sealed his doom. Grammatically challenged Lee Harvey Oswald was the perfect patsy. Handing out leaflets in New Orleans, 1962 that say “Fair Play for Cuba” Where’s the subject? The sentence structure? They would have shot him too if they could. Wait a minute wasn’t Jack Ruby the secretary for the Dallas chapter of GSIC?

“This thread made me realize how many posters use this website as nothing more than a way to feel better about themselves.”
Okay, okay, okay Furious you’re right. Feel better now? BTW, are they (see avatar) your parents?

The Captain is uncomparable, that much has always been obvious.

  41. Thank you, peasants, for the shout out to your superior.

The Captain could be the poster boy for Narcissism, except that he does not crave attention…

    HE DEMANDS IT!

Continue to feel inferior, underlings, and take solace in the fact that I am not judging your lowly station in life. I accept the world the way it is… with me on top 🙂

  42. Reg

The illuminati ultimately serves the Queens English. Goes back centuries through the illuminati. Why do you think the international business language is English………….

    What… would happen…..if the grammar……….got BAD.
