So I think I might be pregnant, but the home test said negative. So I go to my doctor to see what he can do for me. He had me in and out of his office in 2 minutes and sent me to the hospital for blood work to check if I was pregnant and said “See you when we get the results.”

It’s been almost a week and I haven’t heard a word! I called my doctor and they said they haven’t received the results yet! I called again a few days later and still nothing!

I asked if they could call me when they heard something and they said “No, we have too much paperwork. Just keep calling back.”
Have you ever heard the phrase “There’s never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it twice”?

If you’ve got so much paperwork and you’re soooo busy, and I keep calling you and talking to you for 5-10 minutes at a time… don’t you think it would waste less of your time to call your patients back when results come in?

That’s what my old doctor used to do. Plus isn’t it pretty fucked up to wait this long to find out if I’m with child? If I am, I’m pretty sure I should be notified so I can move on to the next step… if I’m not then something is seriously wrong with me! —Patient without patience

  1. Talkabout ignoring the obvious! Ummm here’s an idea, OP: DO ANOTHER HOME PREGNANCY TEST! Why haven’t you done this already??? Clue in, lady!!!
And please, please don’t say it’s because you can’t afford to buy another home kit; because if that is the reason, it’s a whole new kettle of fish…for which you deserve to be fried!

  2. There is something off about the OP’s post. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m getting a vague ‘psycho’ vibe here. I just don’t understand waiting and waiting (bc she seems quite impatient to know) for a pregnancy test result to come back when there are so many extremely reliable home tests. WTF???

  3. Probably afraid the child support cheque will get away without knowing. And in today’s world, between the pill, condom, etc, one shouldn’t be pregnant unless they want to be. All this birth control out there and more both teen and older moms than you can shake a stick at and amazed at how it happened. Here’s an idea. If you don’t want to get pregnant, keep your legs closed.

  4. Okay, seriously, we really don’t need to criticize OP for being nervous and scared. Fear trumps logic sometimes, after all. She might be very young or in a bad financial situation that would prevent her from getting access to better medical help or another test kit.

OP, whoever your doctor is, they suck if they can’t be bothered to help someone with a potential crisis like yours. And if you’re able, go to the Halifax Sexual Health Clinic on Quinpool. They’ll treat you with respect and the tests will be far quicker than with that asshole clinic you went to before.

  5. trying to get rabbits to volunteer for these tests are hard as hell lately. no sane bunny wants to have their guts cut out, and shown to the world. if you think you might be preggo, and missed a couple rags, then chances are that you are knocked up. either tat or your life is a changing.

  6. OP here.
I took another test right after I posted this and it was still negative. I’m still having symptoms too. I looked around for information and found out that pregnancy tests don’t always work for all women because they just don’t produce enough of the hormone that shows up in urine when you’re pregnant. Also, taking test after test if I’m NOT pregnant is foolish so I really have to wait on my doctor to find out what’s actually wrong with me. Sorry if I do seem a little psycho, but I think you would to if your health seemed in danger.

  7. Oh and thanks to pirate jenny for the advice. I think I’m going to do that 🙂
And you pretty much nailed my situation dead on… I am young and not in the best financial situation atm, but I am also married so I’m not alone in this.
I am scared, but also excited at the potential of being pregnant. Just posted here to try and relieve some of the stress I’m feeling.

  8. Birth control… imagine.
Marriage… no doubt, even further from the imagination.
    Abstinence… unheard of.

If you’ve got enough pregnancy hormones to induce symptoms then you’ve got enough to trigger a positive test. You’re not pregnant, not for lack of trying.

  9. No problem, OP. BTW, he tests at the Sexual Health Clinic are free, but you may or may not get one immediately if the clinic is busy. It’s best to call in advance. I’m glad you’re not alone in this; It’s no fun being alone when scary shit happens.

Also, you really need to find another doctor. Don’t even wait for your current one to call back (if they ever do). Sex-negative clinics tend to put these sorts of crises on the backburner. 🙁

  10. Timing.

You are waiting on the holiday. Guarantee it.

If you want a 24 hour turnaround (regardless of holidays) you’ll have to go to a private lab. Not sure if any around here do it, and to be honest I’m not sure if it requires the bioassay backup for an accredited result.

Hmmm. A business opportunity? I have recently decided that it is best not to wait on the province for health care, we need to take matters into our own hands.

  11. Stressing over it can make your period be late too, so treat yourself to something relaxing. I do know the feeling, and it is very stressful. In the mean while, go to http://www.ratemds.com/ and rate your doctor.

Before I moved to Halifax, I had this great doctor who cared about my mental/emotional state as well as my physical state. But not all doctors are like that, and sometimes you have to explain to them that they need to be more considerate of what you are going through, because that’s a big part of your well-being.

  12. Hey Op, I’m sorry I called your post psycho- I was in a really bad mood last night.
I agree with Kay that it’s probably something else. If you’ve had a second negative result, you can probably trust it 🙂 And it doesn’t have to mean something serious is wrong; I’ve known a few people (myself included) who were at one time convinced they were pregnant but weren’t- the symptoms amounted to nothing more than a wierd (but apparently normal) fluctuation of hormones.

  13. Something’s a bit off about this — whenever I have bloodwork done (just routine shit) it always takes less than a week to get back to my doc’s office. And I was told that tests like pregnancy are considered priority and usually only take a couple days.

So, your doc’s office is likely a little disorganized. They probably DID get the results, but probably haven’t even opened them yet — and they said they have too much paperwork, meaning they probably have a lot of stuff to file.

There’s really no excuse for that though — my doc’s office has 4 doctors on staff and a SHIT TON of patients, but fairly little backlog of paperwork as I’ve always been able to get my blood test results within a week (I make an another appointment when I leave the office with my requisition sheet for one week and a bit after I expect I’ll get the tests done). So, your doc’s office is likely understaffed (or not staffed with people who know how to do their fucking job).

Anyway, OP, if done correctly (first thing in the morning, mid stream pee, etc…) pregnancy tests are pretty much as accurate as you can get. Perhaps if you were pregnant the lab would’ve sent the results priority? Try doing what everyone else suggested: take another home preg test.

  14. I can relate to the OP wait time wise. My doctor’s office is horrible. One year they the wrong test results in my file and I had to hound them to track down my results.

My sister has the same doctor. She had a PAP that had abnormal results. Her doctor didn’t call her about it. She called them just to check on her results.

She had to get a second PAP. Again same result – abnormal. When she called the doctor’s office for the results she got berated by the office clerk telling her ‘don’t call us we’ll call you’. She insisted on talking to her doctor. The doctor came on the phone and told her the results were abnormal. She filed a complaint against the rude office clerk.

Anyway long story short: regardless of the type of test don’t wait on your doctor to call you after you get any type of test done. Follow up yourself. That 5 minute phone call could save your life.

I am trying to find a new doctor but no luck….

  15. Jesus, GMAB2010, that’s awful. The Sexual Health Clinic might be a good choice, at least until you find a competent family doctor whom you can reply upon.

What I meant earlier by “sex-negative clinics” was that some doctors and clinics treat sexuality and sex-related health issues in a negative light, or put less importance on them due to a doctor’s own beliefs about the morality of sex. When I read OP’s description of her clinic, I immediately got a feeling that perhaps they weren’t putting as much effort into helping her due to her problem being a sexually-based one (despite her being married). I could be wrong, but even so, who wants a clinic that can’t be bothered to do a simple pregnancy test with the urgency it requires?

  16. A LOT depends on the blood collection lab, PJ. Of course it depends on the filing clerks at the actual doc’s office to put the form in the file, but they still can’t do anything until the lab results come in.

That being said, I’ve never had to wait more than a week for my standard blood work I get every three months. However, my parents have the same doctor as me and for some reason when their results come in the doctor always has the assistants call my parents to book an appointment — but never with me. I never get a call and end up having to call in myself. Maybe it’s because my parents are over 50 and 60? Then again, when my doc was on vacation and another doctor looked over my blood work from the same office they called to tell me that the doc reviewed my blood work and everything looked fine….so who knows.

I used to go to a certain university clinic and i’d get standard check up blood work done and I figured I was fine because they never called me to tell me otherwise like my old doctor in the valley would…turns out I went a year with an abnormal result and had no idea until I switched universities and had a blood panel run there. It wasn’t a HUGE deal, but explained why I had been gaining weight and unable to take it off.

Regardless, it shouldn’t take more than a few days for the doctor to find out whether or not someone’s pregnant via blood lab results. Call again tomorrow, and if they still don’t have any results for you and give you the run around file a complaint with the department of health.

In the meantime, just go take another home preg test (first thing in the morning).

  17. ummm, those aren’t pregnancy tests…
I think you’ve been peeing on digital thermometers.

    Is it a boy or girl? it’s 27 degrees….
well whatever it is, it’s going to be hot!

Wait, I thought Seb was a dude… why were you peeing on them again?

  18. 27 degrees? Damn….dude or girl must be dead. It should say 36.5 C. I think the OP should try not getting knocked up.
