If I go into your store and I spend my money be it 50 cents, 5K or anything in between I expect a polite thank you.

The norm now seems to be the cashier passing me my receipt and saying “Here you go”… Seriously come on. I work hard for what I have. I don’t begrudge paying you for goods or services. But after I finish my shopping (BTW – shop is a 4 letter word) and line up for 10 minutes to pay you the least you can do is say Thank you.

Where the fuck has politeness and common courtesy gone? —No respect I tell you. No respect!

  1. Funny thing is I noticed on my last little shopping spree…the two “lower end” stores were more helpful and polite than the 2 “higher end” stores I shopped in.

Go figure…maybe they feel they don’t have to have good service to make money since the prices are jacked up so much.

  2. And if said clerk had handed over the receipt with a ‘thanks have a nice day’, you’d be on here bitching about insincerity.

    >sigh< No way to win.

  3. People who feel this way have never worked in retail, nobody deserves special treatment we’re all human and we’re all in this together.
You gotta eat so in the end does it really matter? Also, buddy who’s taking your “hard earned” (We all work so fuck off) money is in the middle of WORKING AT HIS JOB!

“Here’s all my groceries! Scan them AND bag them and I better get a thank you for all the work I did.”
    go fuck yourself.

  4. :-/

Jesus. Am I pissing my customers off that much? I wasn’t aware. Typically I ask, “Did you want your debit receipt?” And then if they say yes, I typically say, “Here you go,” or “There you are.” Then I hand them the receipt.

I wasn’t aware I was being rude by doing this… it’s not like I’m glaring at them while I do it.

  5. I don’t see the big deal of saying thank you and I have worked many years in retail.

As a cashier I thanked them for spending their cash and keeping the store open and I expected them to thank me for doing my job well.

What’s the big deal over 2 little words? I liked to chit chat a bit if the customer was feeling conversational and thanking them was just a natural thing to do and I almost always got a thank you back.

  6. Wonders how polite the OB was with the clerk. Did they say hello or how are you or anything? It’s a two way street.

  7. Most cashiers I deal with say “thanks” or “have a good day” — I can’t see this as a problem unless the OP was acting snotty (which I’m sure they were).

  8. I always ask them, how are you today? with a big ol’ grin on my face, aka I’m not going to unnecessarily hassle you, honeycakes – the cashier will usually relax. A little niceness up front from the customer goes a long way.

  9. i always speak up first and i try to call them by their names if they have a nametag. two people happy instead of two people douchey…show me them pearly whites baby

  10. If you had to wait 10 mins in line they must have been pretty busy OP. Unless they their tone was quite rude then you have nothing to bitch about and expect too much. Its not like you were the only one in the General Store down on the corner circa 1940 here. Not saying thank you is not impolite in a situation like you described you fucktard. You said nothing of a rude tone being used so i assume you simply feel aghast at not being thanked for shopping there. Its more rude of you to EXPECT a thank you than for the cashier not to give one. Who the fuck do you think you are???

  11. Maybe a cashier is the only person the OP could possibly get a thank-you from, because no one appreciates him/her. Sad, sad story.

  12. you must have been shopping at the stupid store grocery chain, or maybe even wally world…those are two chains I find that have the longest wait times to ring stuff in.

  13. When I was back last year, I think I heard ‘Thank You’ twice. I’d be willing say they’re more polite in Victoria BC than Halifax. I know for sure the kids are.

  14. As a grocery store cashier, I always say hello and thank you. However, I do not like talking while I am ringing in your order, it distracts me, sorry if you find that rude.

  15. As long as they’re not being a total douche, I don’t really care whether or not a cashier says “Thank you.” I just don’t see it as that big of a deal.

  16. Bring on more of the self-scanners with the option of receiving a thank you, or a no thank you, maybe a go fuck yourself?

  17. I don’t see how “Here you go.” is impolite. I like dealing with friendly people as much as the next person, but I don’t expect anyone to go above and beyond all of the time.

I also don’t get what “working hard” for what you got has to do with anything. The cashier also works for what they make, and they’re probably not angry with you for not saying thank you (which, despite you failing to mention it, might also be a polite thing to do).

It really is insanely hard to please people. If you make an effort to talk to people and be friendly, they get angry because you’re talking too much. If you don’t say enough, they get angry because you’re being “rude”.

    Can’t win, really.

This is why I’m not a cashier anymore. 😛

  18. Sure its nice to get a thank you; but not everyone remembers to do this. You’re going to end up bitter and alone if you keep dwelling on such completely insignificant shit like this.

  19. @Paingirl: You know, I still haven’t figured out who you are, even though I feel like it should be obvious and I should know.

  20. Thank you doesn’t mean much anymore because people use it so gratuitously and without meaning. For example, a fake thank you from the cashier. They’re just words and I don’t expect them, nor do I notice whether or not they say it.

  21. What about the phone call answering greeting “how are you today?” “good and you?” – as if either party really gives a fiddlers fuck.

  22. Paingirl…is good to call the cashier by their names because when I use to work at a large business store when I was in collage we would be mystery shopped and graded on our politeness and helpfulness. We always went overboard on the people who called us by our names because we thought that was them…..lol

  23. You know where I always get great service, devil_girl, speaking of low and high end stores — the Coach store in HSC. I was in this morning scoping out a xmas gift and the sales ladies were super friendly. I’ve been in a few times and they ALWAYS are super nice. Not snooty at all. I’ve also had great service at Banana Republic as well, and at Birks when I went in to look at rings.

I usually get really crappy service at certain department stores at certain make up counters. I’ve been outright ignored there and other customers have been offered service that got there after me. In that case I usually chime in with “YES, I’d like…” when they ask the other person if they can help them.

Fortunately a certain drug store carries this line now and I get points on the merch I buy (skin care stuff — and yes I pay out the ass for it, but it’s the only stuff that my skin isn’t allergic to so fuck off to all the bitchers who bitch at me for spending $$$ on skin care stuff — the walmart crap doesn’t cut it for me) and the sales people there are always super friendly. I’m guessing it’s my age at the dept stores because they seem to fall all over my mom when she goes in, and completely ignores my ass when I go in.

Anyway…just my rant for the day 😛

  24. Pretty Kitty….I love the sales girls at Coach. I bought a bag and had trouble with the zipper…and took it back to exchange it…they were so nice about it….while my 3 year old ran around in circles around the store and I was thinking that they might be pissy…but not at all. A lot of high end store aren’t like that…..but the service is what’s going to make me buy another bag from there!

  25. Oooh I had a chat with one of the girls there about kids who come in and their parents get so embarrassed because the kids like playing and doing tumbles on the soft carpet, but they said they don’t mind at all. I thought that was really impressive given the fact that they’re higher end and higher end is typically snooty and uptight about that stuff.

BTW: what bag did you get? I’m looking at getting one for myself to celebrate my new job ^_^

I figure I might as well go all out and buy something classic with quality that I’ll have for a long long time 🙂

  26. I got the Kristin OP Art Large (Beige and brown). I love it so much…it was my 30th birthday present to myself….lol.

  27. The best service I got recently was at a new store (I think it’s new…haven’t noticed it before anyway) next to Chapters at Mic mac. Looks like a lower priced dept store but the girl that helped me with a snow suit for my niece went out back to find a size for me (I always wonder if they’re actually checking or if they just wander around and come back and tell me they don’t have one)

They didn’t have the size in the one I wanted but she asked if I minded waiting a few minutes because they just got a shipment in and she would open a couple boxes and see what the new snow suits looked like.

She actually brought out 2 snowsuits similar to the one we wanted, straight out of the box and apologized for taking so long and that the snow suits were wrinkled.

    It was great service.

The less than stellar service was when I was prepared to drop down around $1000 to redcorate a room in my house and not only did it take a while to get service. I asked direct questions like “Do you have this one in black like it shows on your website” and the answer was “I don’t think so” and the salesperson then stood there staring at me instead of checking.

I also asked about the price that was shown in a flyer that would have saved me $150 and was told…must be a misprint because that’s not the price.

  28. OOOhhhh… lovely choice, real chick. My 30ths is 2 years away, maybe by then I’ll be able to justify one of those gorgeous creations…

  29. ha ha, poor painey. I agree with you… but for some reason the media or something has infiltrated my brain and I’ve been drooling over ridiculous things. All purses I’ve ever owned have cost less than $20 and have doubled as carry on and grocery bags! ha. Ah well…

  30. Ralmn..they are beautiful eh…..I can’t wait to purchase my next one…but I can’t justify that kind of cash on a bag before xmas. 🙁

It’s called TAG…I bought all my bath stuff there and curtains for my new house. I’ll have to go back for clothes for my little guy though. Thanks for mentioning it….he needs a new snow suite.

  31. it’s okay, you guys works hard and can spend your sheckles on what floats your boat…my money is tied up in the shop and feeding critters. i have a knapsack and a couple of courier bags

  32. @devil_girl when I have worked retail in the past and people wanted to know if we had more XYZ or 123 in a different size in the back, I used to just wander away for a few minutes and pretend I was looking just to satisfy people 😉 It sounds mean but if I know they aren’t there I’m not really looking…

  33. ralmn, why wait till the big 3-0? My 30th is in two years too and I can certainly justify spoiling myself now 😛

I’m putting some $$ aside here or there for one of those babies 🙂

  34. holy shit… everyone here is either 28 or 50 something…
quite the contrast… I’m surprised we get along at times.

  35. We’re probably a lot more open minded than our detractors would have us believe. Except for me, of course. I’m just apathetic. *HeeHaw*
