Okay, I’m 28 and was born in raised in Montreal, where you don’t need a car or a license! Now, I move to this city and the buses suck and transit sucks, so now I need to get a license and a car! I’m 28 fucking years old, and I have to go through the same process as a 16 year old kid! Why? I’m more responsible, more mature, have held a job for over 10 years, I have a wife and a kid. I don’t drink, don’t smoke. I’m a responsible guy, so why the hell do I need to get a Learner’s License, wait 6 fucking months, then if I pass the road test I get a license with a big N on it and I still have to wait 2 fucking years before I have a full license?

  1. um, you need to go through the same process as a 16-year-old because because you have no more driving experience than a 16-year-old.

I wouldn’t want to be on the road with someone who got their license in a day with no practice – there are enough idiots on our roads already.

  2. Being 28 years old and from the “big city” doesn’t naturally instill a knowledge of vehicle operation and the laws of the road. I agree, two years is a long time, but that’s how long the average wait at the DMV seems like anyway.

  3. So by your logic, a 90 year old, who has more decades of experience than you, held a job for over 40 years and very mature should just be handed their driver’s license?

  4. Here’s some news for you buddy… you don’t have to wait the 2 years to get that big fat N off your DL, but you DO have to pay for a 9hr defencive driving course. Enjoy!

  5. The GDL program has to be based on driving experience – if it went by age there would be discrimination/human rights issues.

  6. You don’t know how to drive dumbass. It’s not age related, it’s about experience. Which you have jack of.

  7. C. Mike Hunt: if we go by your logic 12 year olds could file discrimination/human rights complaints about not being able to drive until they’re 16.

Fact: 16 year olds are less responsible than older adults. It’s not just because they’re 16 it’s because around age 16 a complete re-wiring of their nervous occurs. 16 is actually an awful age to let people start driving. 18 is probably a more appropriate age because the nervous system is pretty much fully matured.

I do think the GDL program is a good thing for new drivers of any age, though. However, it seems more geared towards young drivers. Perhaps some changes in policy for the over 25 crowd?

  8. how are you 28 and never got your license? Is this not a priority when you are young?? Get off your high horse and accept the hole you have dug for yourself!! Here is a spoon to build stairs from the dirt in your hole. It is called a learner’s license.

  9. I honestly didn’t see much difference between having an N and not having one. It’s almost as good a regular licence:

    – No more passengers than seatbelts, that’s a nobrainer no matter who is driving
    – No driving after midnight, get a note from your employer if you can saying you work past midnight, you should be fine
    – No alcohol tolerance, again, a nobrainer. Yes, that means no buffer zone, but it’s nothing a little planning won’t fix.

It’s not the end of the world, and the 2 years passes pretty quickly if you don’t think too much about it. If you think that’s bad, I could tell you what is needed for a class 2 licence.

  10. HEre is what you do. Find a province without GDL, go there, get your license, go to nova scotia and transfer your license. I am not sure if they reference the date it was recieved or not – but it’s worth looking into.

  11. It’s your own fault you don’t have your driver’s license. I don’t care if you are from New York City, you should have anticipated you wanted to drive some day. Every 16 year old should get it, it comes in handy.
