Unless my driving instructor was very wrong, you’re supposed to stop before turning right on a red. So I do it, because driving rules are important- I like to think that if I follow them I won’t die. The next time I do this, can the 10+ cars behind me not start honking and hurling verbal abuse? I can’t go yet, okay?! I can completely relate… such a pain in the ass. I especially like the left turn on Quinpool and Robie, when people begin honking at you for not pulling into traffic even though there’s an advance after.

They said they waited a grand total of five seconds, mrman. That’s not “way too much time”, especially if there’s oncoming traffic. So many people don’t follow the rules it becomes a honkfest when someone does. There is NO need to go batshit on them.

It’s not the rule of the road that’s the problem, it’s the lack of skill in judging when it’s safe to turn. The OP obviously can’t tell when she has enough time to turn safely into traffic, so she sits there and waits until there’s a clear lane as far as the eye can see, and that pisses people off that have the ability to judge it and can’t get by. Same as the assholes who drive at 70KM/h on a 100 series highway because of a little rain on the road, or 80 when it’s dry.
Both sides to this are true, however, it is true that you must stop at a red light before turning right.
Most people don’t technically come to a complete stop at red lights while turning right or at stop signs, just a “slow down” before continuing on. Technically that’s illegal! Then again, I think a lot of stop signs could be yield signs. Stopping and starting so much isn’t good for your car, and it’s even more of a pain in a standard!

OP, do what I do in your case, wait until the light turns green for your lane before you go; let those fucks behind you get their panties in a bunch! It is your call on when it is safe, not theirs, and they can’t do anything, they have to wait.
anton… people are getting pissed because if you don’t pull out into the intersection before the delayed left arrow goes thats 2 or 3 cars that aren’t going to make it through the intersection.. especially if you or someone else shits the bed when it goes.
Yes, stopping at a red light is the law. Yes, it is their call if it is safe or not.
But that is not the case here. It is this person taking more time than necessary to judge the situation, and therefore a queue builds up, causing delays at the intersection and forcing people to wait (probably until the next cycle) to move. As I said, 99% of drivers don’t have road rage; they get their “panties in a twist” because of people not understanding simple driving behavior.
Many driving situations are best navigated intuitively. Don’t feel comfortable doing this, feel free to get off the roads and practice in a parking lot or something.

I love the people at the Willow Tree intersection (Robie-Quinpool-Bell-Cogswell) who miss or just don’t get the delayed left turn arrow and just sit there, completely dumfounded as to why everyone behind them is honking at them. That is, if they can hear the people behind them honking at them, as most of the time it seems that these people are at least 90 years old. GRRR old people drivers! I agree that nervous, overly-hesitant drivers can also be a bit of a pain, but I’m not saying that aggressive drivers are any better though. Alternatively, this may be a good argument to ride your bike more as you can simply whiz past all the rest of the cars stuck in traffic. I love doing this at rush-hour… as safely as possible, of course.
I had some newly licensed cunt not only not stop at Dunbrack and Langbrae but go all the way to the far left lane (thus driving directly across my 60-80km/h path).
Its been 20-25 years since Driver’s Ed but I’m pretty sure that not only are you supposed to stop, when you do turn you should turn into the lane to your immediate right. Its a good thing I was the only vehicle approaching or it could have been ugly.

Ignorant for what? I felt that it was not safe to turn on the red. The NSDH clearly states “you MAY turn right on red after stopping and making sure that you can turn safely”. Nowhere does it say that the lunatics behind me can override my safety by blowing their hooters, you impatient prick.
But if you’re in morning/afternoon traffic there’s always a line, there’s always a lot of cars behind you. It doesn’t mean they took too long, it’s pretty common
