To a certain computer tech shop:
you are a bunch of money grubbing, unsympathetic losers. I paid you for data recovery… I paid A LOT. Little did I know I was only going to have it for 6 months!!! You put it on a faulty hardrive and then told me that I had to be the one to contact the hardrive’s manufacturer to reconcile this, not you. Some customer service you have there. I guess computer techs can be really socially clueless. Meanwhile, all my files for the business I run are inaccessible and therefore my livelihood has been seriously affected. Good job. —I Rely Too Much on Little Copper Chips and Stuff

Don’t you back up your own data OP?
I think everyone who _doesn’t_ do a regular backup has a moment like you have had – where everything is lost.
I had an event like this in school where I lost a terms worth of work about two weeks before the end of the term, and I had to re-do every single project – a lot of sleepless nights.
And then it was a lesson learned by me… and an external drive was purchased.
I would think that after the first experience OP, you would have purchased an external hard drive, another internal hard drive, some cloud storage, SOMETHING, so that you weren’t helpless and in the same position again.
But you didn’t.
Sounds like you need to take some responsibility for yourself OP and get with it. A PC tech is not Western Digital or Seagate – Hard Drives WILL fail, it is only a matter of time. You had six months to do something about it…
That sucks. If you have the computer with you, I’d suggest burning a bootable Linux disk: Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/) and booting your dead PC through the disk. If this works, you can fish around the hard drive and maybe pull the data you need. I used this on a laptop that went tits-up (blue screen) and was able to get all the data before formatting the drive.
BACK IT UP.
(not your ass)
NO SYMPATHY FOR YOU! Who owns a business and doesn’t back up?! Dummy!
Well, OB is valid in their bitching of the horrible customer service…
buuuuuut, they’re obviously a moron if they don’t have their shit backed up — especially since they run a business. You can’t really blame the computer store for that — you can only blame yo’ self, OB.
i was going to come on here and tell you to GET A BACK UP HARDDRIVE… but i don’t think i need to….
ever hear tell of cd’s, and dvd’s, to record important shit on. fuck, even seb knows that.
….I did back it up, the harddrive that failed was an external, then they just moved the data onto a new external…which was faulty. Externals are not immune to breakage. So if I were you guys I`d start using clouds like google docs.
cool, i have no idea what you’re on about. fortunately i know people who do
If you’re Hard drive is still somewhat operational OB, you may have some luck with a program such as:
http://www.piriform.com/recuva
It is free. But you’ll want a second hard drive to back up TO or you’ll really be up shit creek when you start recovering on top of the original files. Hope this helps you
On a good note, that’s one less business harping about “Buy local.”
I read this post twice. I couldn`t find anything pertaining to ants, about how they communicate through the use of pheromones, about how an entire ant colony acts as one organism with the queen as the nerve centre, how some can lift 500 times their own weight.
Anteaters primarily eat termites despîte their name so the title of the bitch could apply to that if OP had some particular insight into this animal`s feeding habits.
That said, that was terrible customer service. If they sell something to you and it is defective even six months later, there should be some sort of warranty. Even if it is with that business`s vendor.
You shoulda gone to zZz.
That’s all.
*insert shameless plug for Orgasmatron’s employer here*

“You shoulda gone to zZz.
That’s all.”
Um no. All he’d do is yell at them. I’m not even joking.
Thanks Donk!
🙂
I had to laugh @
“ever hear tell of cd’s, and dvd’s, to record important shit on”
with flash drives and hdd prices so low… who even needs dvd’s anymore for data backup…
(granted the taiwan floods have halted the majority of global hard drive manufacturing for the past few months… they’re back up and running now so we should see prices continue to fall…)
PARTITION people… that’s always step ONE so if the OS partition fails, you still have separate logical segments… and can recover all your other data with one of these suckers:
http://queenst.downtowndigital.ca/ShopItem…
I swear by mine… it’s kick ass and lets me hot-swap drives like a mad fiend.
if you get a computer and don’t re-partition the whole damn thing right out the gate…
you’re asking for headaches later.
Actually hard drives have gone way up in price very recently thanks to floods in the Bangladesh – but still much less than the original 20MB hard drive I had for my Atari ST… I think that was $600?? yikes…

Or, just get a mac.
