  1. To quote Dr Suess:

You have brains in your head
You have feet in your shoes
    You can steer yourself
    Any direction you choose.

    What if taking your job
is the path that he choose?
    Ha Ha Ha

Seriously Dr. F? I thought Canadian banks were an example of strength in this rough economy (as the media put it). I wish you all the best in finding new work. Ever consider bus driving? We’re hiring.

  4. get a job in alberta for 6 month out the year and go back for the other 6 – you won’t be bbroke and get to also spend your EI maximun cheques ( exceeding most NS wages anyways ) and then enjoy summer and head back 6 months later – never be broke

  5. They are, but here’s the thing: they’re also concerned about significant profit losses. All banks are going through the same thing. They’re strong… just on the backs of the employees. It’s not as if I didn’t see it coming.

  6. Sucks dude. Been there, still there, I suggest hitchiking to the US and selling blood, sperm (or eggs), and kidneys like the rest of us… 🙂

  7. my EI is 1700 a month when i come back home from alberta back to NS and it leaves alot of money to be made without penalty. Thou thats just me – i understand especially NS econimy is slapped around and poor – but you have to do what you have to do – unfortunatly most scotians with skilled trades come up to alberta for 9 months out the year to make some thing and save some cash and go back home for summer to NS PEI nfld whatever – its a sad part of the canadian economy – and it blows . Well theres always shaking the tims cup on skin garden ? Buy a dump truck and haul crap to the dump and do painting and stuff thats what i did ( truck was a 1.5 ton tilt box and i knocked on doors and generated money myself for shitty jobs noone wanted to do – be creative even if you work at a bank – nothing stopping you from learning painting and how to generate offshot jobs by demand and do them – doesn’t lower your status it just shows creativity on your part – and oh yea with out reciepts on some jobs its called NS none reportable haha

  8. PK— I’ve thought of it, I’m certainly cranky enough to be a bus driver!

Weedhog— Congrats buddy, you’re exactly what’s wrong with the EI system in general, and it’s exactly why it’s so difficult to get it. Good work, continue to fuck the system like you do and bone honest people.

I expect the job is more appealing now with the CCTV. My bud drives for Coast out in Vancouver, and he tells me stories of all the treads that just waltz on saying “got no money man”…they’re finally getting (or got) the cameras after a long fight with the union.

The agreement says that they CCTV record CANNOT be used “internally” against the driver, although if he’s, say, smoking a fatty, that’s different…

BTW, I was surprised to hear how much they made per hour out there…I won’t horrify you, but it’s a lot! Union difference methinks…

  10. I’d love to be a bus driver! It’s always been what I wanted to do from a very young age. In fact, when I was eight, I dressed up as a Metro Transit bus for Halloween (and have the pictures to prove it). My only main concern is that there isn’t much room to move up, and what do chicks really think when you tell them you’re a bus driver? If this bus is a rockin’, don’t come a knockin’!

Dr. Fever, have you considered shitty menial barely above minimum wage jobs for the time being? That’s what I’m doing at the moment. It sucks, but it helps keep your sanity most of the time (but drive you more insane others) by keeping you busy as well as keeping at least some income coming in. I went through a four month period of being unemployed before I finally resorted to going back to this type of job several months ago, but have never in my entire life collected EI (though I was on Worker’s Comp. for a few weeks several years ago). If you’re anything like me, you’ll just feel better for just working period, no matter what it may be. Working menial minimum wage jobs when you already have your degree and previous work experience in your field may suck balls, but being unemployed sucks bigger balls in my opinion.

  11. Bad Mr. Frosty, I suspect they make more at Coast Mountain than we make. We start right now at $22.17 (it’s on the posting, why make a secret of it). The CCTV doesn’t stop all problems, but it has made people think twice about pulling things. I hope the “internally” thing never comes up with us, but in case it does, I know where the cameras point 😉

Dr F, if you do go nuts and apply to be my transit BFF, keep in mind the process takes a few months so take Q’s advice in the meantime.

Q, if you show charisma when you say you’re a driver, ladies will be impressed. If that fails, tell ’em what you make. Worst case scenario, you get some nice views anyway. You have till tomorrow, online résumés only.

  12. Meh, I’m pulling enough in with EI to support myself for the time being. I was smart enough to follow the golden rule of financial planning. Save at least three month’s living expenses. It’s not great, especially considering I hate having time off, but I can be choosy as to what I want from a job.

  13. Not too much more, starting at 22 is pretty good, CM is only 5 bucks more, so that’s better than I’d thought.
With overtime, and Sundays, one can live on that wage, for sure.
