  38. Sebastard’s got it wrong– most arts degrees teach you how to write. It’s the business students who copy and paste.

    Trust me, I had to go through enough re writing of entire group projects when I was in business to know those kids couldn’t write their collective way out of a box.

    Out of my three designations, I’d take the arts over the business and PR one any day.

    Yes, Norm, you have a point. I have also wondered about bloggers who use links instead of sentences or even paragraphs(!) to post their comments on Bitch. I have given this deep thought, Norm, and have concluded that it is both a cause and a symptom of what I call “The Butterfly Mind.” But what is this “Butterfly Mind?” Two factors contribute to its existence.

    First, bloggers using links do not have what we would call thoughts, Norm, but rather only mental pictures. Their links are intended to convey these mental pictures. They do not deal in concepts. Their level of communication is either infantile or such as is found in primitive cultures but, unlike the cave paintings at Lescaux or Altimira, for example, the links show no artistic creativity since they are simply cribbed from commercial sources. Further, the link – usually some sort of cartoon – is static, allowing of no comment. How can one argue with a cartoon, Norm? The Butterfly Mind simply flits from one comment or thread to the next. He is like, well, a butterfly.

    The second factor is a consequence of the first. Since writing is crystallized thought and thought can be conveyed only in writing, the blogger of necessity writes nothing or next to nothing. There are no concepts, no development, no structure. In other words, Norm, there are no ideas. Providing no substance for reflection and discussion, the Butterfly Mind plays the role of the dog in the manger, effectively eliminating the possibility of dialogue which, one supposes, is – or at least was – the purpose of Bitch.

    So Norm, there we have it. The Butterfly Mind is both the cause and the symptom of bloggers who depend on links for their posts. Have a good day, Norm.
