Ok, so I have seen tons of bitches on here about how rude Halifax is. But, has anyone traveled to southwestern Nova Scotia. Holy fucking shit! I have never felt like a bigger piece of crap in my life.
Everywhere I went, it was the same. Standing in line while waiting to check out, I saw how you treated everyone in front of me; friendly and talkative. However, when I got to the front, you couldnt even look at me. You didnt even acknowledge when I greeted you. I was not being rude. The only thing I could figure out was that you figured I was from out of town. Almost everywhere I went, people stared. Do I stand out?
And, this is not exclusive to one place. I was in many stores and establishments from Yarmouth County, into Shelburne and Queens County (worst place of all was Liverpool and the bitch at the Superstore!). Things only got better when I got to Lunenburg County.
I get that it is not tourist season, so you dont have to fake nice. But, come on, would it hurt you to acknowledge my existence?
—Did I wrong you?

The more uptight you get over this shit, the better the chance you have of driving this dude away. A good relationship is based on trust and if you can’t trust this guy, then you’d better wake up and stop blaming other women. My spouse worked in a band for years and always had women fawning over him. But I knew he wouldn’t settle for Hamburger Helper when he had steak home.
You didn’t do anything wrong, OP. This place is a fucking hole. Most live in the dark ages, cling to racism and fear when it comes to *gasp* talking to a stranger and the people here are expecting to get shafted (at the gas pump, buying staples like milk & bread… anything that’s not property is more expensive here). Welcome to the armpit of Canada… if enough of you come and stay we might turn this place into something more hospitable. In the meantime “Nova Scotia Hospitality,” in my experience, proves a major oxymoron but stick around… yeah, sure.
How the fuck did my comment for another post get on this page? Fuck, senility sucks sometimes.
Nova Scotia is filled with inbred hillbilly rubes who could easily inspire Stephen King. These kind of flea-brained, narrow-minded hicks seem to inspire me as well – I like to use my loud, obnoxious city voice when they’re checking me out at the cash – fuck, if they want to be so ignorant, I’ll play the game.
well OP it is experiences like this that make us appreciate those who are kind and curteous that much more. ive long since given up becoming angry at boorish people…id be pissed alot dont you think?
its quite the opposite on eastern shore.
i’ve driven from dartmouth to sherbrooke a few times and have received smiles, hellos and waves from the side of the road from complete strangers.
granted there are a lot of uptight jerks in NS, there are also a lot of good, down-home folks who love to meet new people.
The friendliest people in this province are Cape Bretoners, hands down. More than two people is a kitchen party.
Yeah, I travel to Southwest NS all the time, and everywhere else on the province, and it’s as friendly from one end to the other(and everywhere else I’ve been in the world). If everywhere you go was looking at you like crap, I’d wonder what the factor here was, all those people, or you?
They’re kinda weird like this in the valley too. Not as bad as SW NS, but it’s not just people in the service industry who are arseholes in the valley: I worked in the service industry in the valley and the asshats I had to deal with (locals) were enough to make anyone bitchy. People, in general, in the valley, are miserable (and hay I’d be miserable too if I still had to live there).
Yeah Cape Bretoners are the best.
I once drove down the South Shore with friends and we stopped in Bear River. We met a older hippy couple who basically hung out with us the whole afternoon, took us for a beer and showed us one of the best waterfalls I’ve ever seen. Then they helped us find a shortcut to a beautiful beach to camp for the night. Their hospitality and general fun attitude was so unexpected. I agree that most people in this world are grumpy, bitter assholes, but the nice ones will stand out for me all the more because of that.
It’s frigging hilarious going back to my hometown in Lunenburg Co., walking down the main street seeing all the slack jawed yokels staring at me from their pickup trucks. “Durrrrr” I can hear it now “dat dere’s a new one.” It’s always the same ones too…they go to “The City” once a year and peer excitedly out the windows all like “lookit dem dere black folk!”
But as Lang says, there’re also really nice, fun people in rural areas, as you’ll find out if you stay there a longer period of time.
Ok Ratter, I’m curious. B’water or New Germany?
I’d love to put up a sign in New Germany that reads: BEWARE OF SNAPPING LUTHERANS.
Bridgewaaaaateh, dere, you.
If this is the armpit of Canada then it could be argued that Toronto would be the ball-sack and Quebec City the anus of Canada. I’m curious … would that leave Ottawa as the taint?
If I lived in Yarmouth I’d be fucking cranky too.
I agree that NS is FULL of people that make Deliverance look like every day life. There are a LOT of scary hillbillies around, and you don’t have to leave the city to see them. Just ride the bus, folks.
Raoul Duke… if you lived in DARTMOUTH you’d be cranky too
agreed about the valley…dont live there if you can avoid it. trust me. i always find myself wondering whats so pretty on the sidewalks and ceiling and walls when im around the valley.
too much pig shit and fertilizers in the air i guess.
Maybe you had a touristy vibe.
i’m from cape breton and i can defend a lot of what the posters are saying about the CB folks.
its the only place in NS (other than eastern shore or parts of the valley) where i can walk down a street and a complete stranger is sincerely asking me how i am and how my day is going.
capers LOVE to meet new people and i support that notion fully.
Wow. Usually you guys jump down peoples throats for saying stuff like that about NS. Now you agree?
Indeed OP, been around and I’ve met friendlier people everywhere else but here. Even in Florida! Which I heard that it was one of the rudest places to visit.
Most of the people who bitch and reply on the Coast are LOSERS anyways. (except me – lol). People who hide behind their computer, and this is their only chance to be rude to someone (like their boss) who was rude to them. I think most people that bitch are prob nicer in person. But they just lack common manners on the internet. Probably very insecure people, that have never amounted to anything in life, so this is how they get their frustrations out.
Hey, MS, spare us your psychology 101 evalutation – are you so fucking stupid that you have to slot and catalogize people you don’t even know? Your broad and sweeping generalizations are products of a closed, anal tight little mind.
MS… since you feel the unrelenting need to categorize…
You’ve come on here, called us all Losers and claim we have no manners when dealing on public forums. We’re also insecure and haven’t amounted to anything in life.
Oh yeah and WE’RE the rude ones….
Apples to apples and pears to pears, I’m thinking at least the majority of us fit in your little “Except Me” section you categorically inept fucking douche.
Heh-heh-heh – ‘categorically inept fucking douche’ – thanks for the morning chuckle, zZz. It’s amazing what we attract here, isn’t it?
Isn’t Bear River in the Valley? I agree with most of you (a lot) about the Valley, except for Annapolis Royal, parts around Wolfville and of course, Bear River.
Annapolis Royal was once voted the best small town in the entire world by the U.N., seriously. Go check it out http://www.annapolisroyal.com/
People are super sweet to me whenever I go around there, and trust me, my friends and I don’t look like the locals.
