Can someone tell me why a 1,200 square foot house in this city should go for over $300K? How do they expect people to be able to afford to live in this city? I know it’s all supply and demand but c’mon! —Homeowner wannabe

  1. o.p., they expect only dealers to buy theses houses, or some special welfare cases.

  2. Stop looking in the areas you’re looking in. Go to Sprytown, or even give Hammonds Plains a go. Hell, most of Dartmouth is better than that.

  3. so what some kinda price control/prop. value freeze. perhaps gov. funded ; sure why not let’s make home ownership a human right ?

  4. You could move to Hillbilly Hollow like I did and save yourself a big chunk of cash. Of course, the downside of living on the corner of Inbred Lane & Idiot Avenue is the moron who fucks raccoons under my bedroom window.

  5. I’m in a good place with 1200 for under 170k. Don’t bother looking for where I’m at, like Tuscancy, there’s nothing available. Get on mls.com and start looking.

  6. Wow TTFN….I just shot coffee out my nose. You have a very special talent with words.

  7. Cole Harbour, Woodlawn, and Eastern Passage are excellent places to look for decent priced starter homes. If people stopped paying the high prices for houses in other neighborhoods, there’s be no issue with high home costs.

  8. Don’t complain. Housing in Vancouver for 1200sq feet will push you close to $850k. New housing in HRM at 1500+ sq ft will always be $250k+ depending on the area.

  9. the north/west end still has small starter homes for a decent price…handy peoples houses

  10. Dartmouth! Just bought a house near downtown for under $200K. No, it’s not perfect, but it was a reasonable price and in good enough condition.

  11. Honestly though, there isn’t a whole lot <$200,000. 225k seems like the magic number around here. Would have put me in "Armdale" if I could have swung it, but glad with what I got. Anyway, check it for under 200k

  12. Even Dartmouth is getting ‘spensive, there’s not much decent for under 200K, we’ve been looking and they’ve been scary! But seriously, how DO people afford these 300k + places? How much money does the average person make? Our combined income is around 100k and we can’t afford shit even though we don’t have any debt. I guess I will have to stop eating fresh fruit, vegetables and shopping at Pete’s if I want to live in a decent house someday.

  13. Truth is there is nothing in the 300k home that warrants it’s price (unless you are heart set on being in the city) most homes can be built for under 100K…. The only real fluctuation in cost is the land itself. I’ve built million dollar condos in Vancouver and they use the same grade drywall and paint as they do for the public housing options.
