Hotmail just went down and it’s sure fucked my day. I can’t believe how many eggs that basket holds! Time to rethink Mr Gates’ servers as being “world class”.

  1. Oh no!!!!! The e-mail server is down!!!!!! The end of your life!!!!!!

Try gmail. Less buggy, better presentation. Less Microsoft market presentation.

  2. “Hotmail sucks ass… I don’t know anyone under fifty who still uses that ancient piece of shit.”

what do you know like 4 people?

  3. People have always complained about hotmail, so I’ve avoided since my first email address. I’ve always had and enjoyed my yahoo account, and now I have a gmail, and still have my canada.com addy, even though it sucks, because it’s sounds so much more professional.

  4. Wow. That’s really professional. Using Hotmail for your oh-so-fantastic-world-altering-better-than-anything-else-anywhere-at-any-time-in-history company. Good job Kaytard.

  5. Yeah, I did. Love that penetration! Especially market penetration. Wet, sweaty, sloppy market penetration.

  6. “Wow. That’s really professional. Using Hotmail for your oh-so-fantastic-world-altering-better-than-anything-else-anywhere-at-any-time-in-history company. Good job Kaytard.”

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

I thought hotmail was today’s business standard? 😉

  7. No kidding, fizz. I can’t understand how someone could put an email address that doesn’t include their actual name or initials on a resume and expect to be taken seriously as a professional. Then again, I’ve seen resumes from people who seem to think a ‘fun’ font is more important than actually spelling their qualifications properly.

  8. it did, since when, i have been off and on it since 6 a.m., and mine never went down at all. maybe it’s just yours that is having a problem, it happens.

  9. I have to agree. Gmail always has worked great and I haven’t had a problem . It’s the one I always use with nary a problem over several years. I just use hotmail for signing up for sites and never really check it.

  10. I’m under 50 …just, & my hotmail accounts have never given me a problem.
Which is why I haven’t gone elsewhere.

  11. I just use it for the sake of MSN when I feel the need to boot it up. I think I have lost thousands of messages by letting it expire and then resigning up with my email address…. I don’t see anything wrong with it though. I just choose to use gmail instead.

  12. Never Wrong, both gmail and hotmail can be configured to manage alias accounts. If you’re like me and you have a number of email accounts to manage from various domains it’s not such a fucking retarded solution, not if your livelihood depends on connectivity, you fuckwad. Go choke on a tack, asshat.

And here I was hopeful for intelligent bitching on the egg comment.
Never mind. It was only a 15 minute heart attack yesterday. Gotta LTWWB

  13. Actually kay, Outlook and Thunderbird are far superior for managing multiple email accounts; especially Thunderbird (because it’s not Microsoft), because they provide a non-internet reliant system, because the emails are stored locally on your computer, as opposed to the servers, and they can be configured to download the info as quickly or sporadically as you want. It increases your productivity, as you’re not reliant on somebody else. As long as your computer is working, you have access to the emails that were just recently downloaded onto your computer.

Pretty simple stuff, right? I’m sure that I’m just preaching to the choir though, as you would already know this since you’re in IT.

By the way, how’s that Windows NT 2003 edition treating ya?

  14. Just when I was thinking i was getting somewhat familiar with computer technology ….dr fevers comment happens.

    Dammit. lol

P.S there may be a double posting, my other comment just disappeared.

  15. This “non-internet reliant system” you speak of is attached to one physical hard drive. When you’re me that won’t do. I want access to everything all the time from everywhere I work. I agree Thunderbird is a nice e-client but if you work in multiple computing environments syncing is a bitch, especially where sent mail is concerned. If you’re working in varying OS environments it’s convenient to have http access to email too. I’d challenge you to advise a client from a distance on how to synch their Outlook AFTER their hard drive crashes or laptop stolen. I avoid the question all together (did you make a backup?) by depending on world class web mail with unlimited storage capacity… that costs nothing (because I have this really really old legacy account). It leaves my customer to use whatever e-client they want knowing I support the maintenance and configuration of only their web mail. WAY fewer headaches that way and I don’t really care if they open an attachment on their PC. Hotmail provides preliminary virus scanning free too.

The “simple stuff” to consider is your plan, Fever… planning “non-internet reliant” contingency for a “network reliant” system is like… hmmm… it’s like having a spare car engine just in case the roads close. (oy!?!)

NT 2003??? You tell me. I don’t go there.

  16. Well, I guess you get what you pay for, don’t you, Kay? I certainly wouldn’t hire someone who thinks hotmail in any capacity is fit for professional use…but that’s probably just me.

  17. Of my many emails, I have one that hasn’t changed in almost ten years…it’s webmail, sure…and it rules.
All my “outlook” type emails have changed everytime I move, or switch internet providers…pain in the ass.

I didn’t think people still used those, guess they do…

  18. PK— anytime. Just gotta flex that geek knowledge sometimes, ya know?

kay, I’d be more concerned about data integrity. See, the problem with cloud computing is that even the best 128 bit encryption can be cracked, so as far as your clients are concerned, they should be knocking down your door if you’re storing sensitive data online. There’s no substitute for a good server and a firewall, and you have a server, you can use a email client, because storage isn’t an issue! Less reliance on Microsoft’s crap e-mail servers (anybody who has the slightest bit of knowledge of computers knows they’ve never been called “world class”) and better data integrity. Good for your clients, better for you. Failing that, any small business person that doesn’t work from a networked CPU should have a external hard drive, because a good external only costs about $200 for a terabyte, which could be used to back up data, store customer data, if properly partitioned, and kept in a fireproof cabinet of some sort. I doubt any business would need more than 500 GB alone for basic customer info/sales records. I won’t even go into how most companies that rely on a mobile workforce use VPNs now to eliminate the issue regarding data integrity on local machines.

My advice to a client that has to sync their Outlook again is to deal with it; it’s not that hard, it just requires some patience. Sure it’s a pain in the ass to re-enter the info and usually it can be a complicated process to get network and calendar permissions up and running, but that’s when you remote in and do it for them. Most businesses run Windows-based systems (networked and not), I’d hazard a guess that at least 90% of non-networked small businesses use some form of Windows XP Pro or Vista Small Business. So, Remote Access isn’t a problem. Anyone who is running any version before XP deserves what they get, because Microsoft ended support a long time ago for those versions (not to mention too, if your pre-XP machine fails, without a recovery disc, you might as well buy a new machine). If you do IT support exclusively by phone to any Windows based machine, you might as well be an over educated guy from India to me, because that’s all they do and that’s provided free to me when I buy my business computer (my Dell Latitude certainly does), so why should I pay you? That said, I might as well use Linux and avoid the whole damn issue.

Whoa, slow down there! You lost me at “cloud computing.”

  20. “even the best 128 bit encryption can be cracked”… yeah sure, you tell that to Interac, PayPal, Credit Card POS machines, your browser and financial institutions everywhere.

“anybody who has the slightest bit of knowledge of computers knows [Microsoft servers] have never been called ‘world class'”… you’re kidding me, right? Be an MS corporate client for a day then taste Microsoft again for the first time.

“better data integrity”… how so? the bit is on or it’s off. The checksum matches or it does not. What the hell are you talking about? In a cloud computing environment it’s always there too, just to put some icing on your cake. If you’re talking about the integrity of your synced up inbox this statement is simply false.

“good for your clients” How so? If THEY fail to make a backup of THEIR email THEY’RE fucked.

“you have a server, you can use a email client”
but WHY would I want to field the traffic of a bazzillion employees checking their inbox a million times over each moment of every day? I have MANY more pressing things to do with bandwidth

“VPNs now to eliminate the issue regarding data integrity on local machines”… VPN is NOT new. What’s new is business NOT taking on the expense given required architecture, development, security, maintenance and the risk to security VPN imposes. Better be ready to have a Cisco expert on staff who is ready to resist the hack game of the day. Fuck that! Cloud computing negates my need to employ a Cisco expert. (yes, Cisco is a career all unto it’s own and not my specialty)

“I doubt any business would need more than 500 GB for basic customer info/sales records” yeah sure, and Bill Gates thought we wouldn’t need more than 64k base memory too. You’re absolutely WRONG but then again I come from a world where the customer list might be the entire country because the customer is a foreign bank.

“VPNs now to eliminate the issue regarding data integrity on local machines”… please learn more about this. There are few things a business can do to invite a hack better than the opening of ports to support VPN. VPN forces you to open your ENTIRE internal network to the outside world. Please learn about this before you spew anymore garbage about VPN. VPN equals technically expensive headache.

“My advice to a client that has to sync their Outlook again is to deal with it” LOL I’ll bet you gotta lotta clients huh? LOL “Deal with it” I should try that and see what it does for business! LOL

    Everyone’s an expert *rolls eyes*

hog, don’t you get tired of seeing your posts disappear?

  21. Someone should try to tatOO this thread on their arse, if you a have really BIG ARSE!

But if you don’t…you might try making some peanut sweat potato soup!

    hic.. thought you’d like that

    🙂

  22. kay, where should I start?

The bank’s internet banking systems have been cracked, and info stolen. You just don’t hear about it; see they like to keep that stuff quiet-like ya know?

Yes, the Corporate Microsoft servers are better than your average server. But to access those, you need to be running either an unlimited license Enterprise version of Windows or Windows NT. Hotmail/Live is well known in the community as not being the best.

You fail to realize that integrity is also security. Because you’re cheap, you’re risking information security.

Of course VPNs aren’t new, but I’m telling you what is now becoming a business standard. Geez, I can download a VPN for myself to my personal machine, and I have so I can watch Hulu without any “we can’t play this video because you’re in Canada BS”. I don’t need a Cisco expert on hand to know how it works, as it’s a pretty simple program. Login, wait for connection, go online. When I used a VPN for business purposes from a laptop, it was encrypted, and was only active long enough to back up my work to my public and private drives at the office. No security risk there.

A small business would probably use less than 500 GB on spreadsheets, customer files, etc. In my example, I was using a terabyte, so that would leave approx. 450 GB left to account for formatted space. If a small business needs more than that, well, you buy a new one. Data storage is cheap now. Also, no large company like a bank would store customer data online, or with some small time IT company like yours that relies on Hotmail for cloud computing, especially in this day in age where a $500 desktop can be used as a data storage server.

Yes, I am a bit of an expert, and apparently I know your job better than you do. But hey, these are just musings from someone who spent 4 years doing light (e.g.: networking, POS issues), local IT work for a retailer on top of my other duties. Everything is different in the kay world.

Ruby, you must be talking about the iMaxiPad. It’s not available as yet, but as far as the unit itself is concerned, if you’ve ever used an iPod Touch or an iPhone, it’s basically those two same products, with a bigger screen, and no Flash support, because Apple hates Flash, because people like Flash to run multimedia stuff because it’s more user-friendly than Quicktime. But Steve Jobs needs a new turtleneck, so he’s gotta sell another useless toy.

  23. Actually Kay , because everyone else gets to laugh at them before you report them , no . Do I care , no. Do I like seeing you look uneducated and like a dummy on this post ? YES! Do YOU ever get tired of being a liar and called out upon your stupidity (ie dr fevers post) and make yourself look even stupider on the retorts.

    Yea thats entertainment .

Atleast I am just an asshole and can live with that . My reaL job isn’t as important as your FAKE job. So I guess that makes me real . Better then looking fake like you – which you are anyways .

Keep it up though Kay you are entertaining and other peoples posts actually make you look dumb.

  24. Holy crap you people are writing fucking novels here! Ya ya, and no I DON’T like it so I WON’T read it, OK! Just saying!

Now I’ll go back to masturbating (for you Fizz, but not in the way you may think! Let’s see if this one stays up).

  25. I use my hotmail address for signing up for contests, website accounts, and other stuff that’s going to lead to getting spammed. That’s all hotmail is good for in my opinion. Just sayin’.

  26. Fever’s right: if kay wasn’t such a cheap ass she wouldn’t be putting sensitive client information on HOTMAIL. That’s what it comes down to. She CLAIMS to be a “professional,” yet uses HOTMAIL (and probably bills her clients for ‘server use’ in the process).

And if she can’t afford to operate otherwise, perhaps she shouldn’t be in business? I mean desi probably makes enough in his OMG TOTALLY AWESOME CAREER AS A SMALL TIME (I.E. LOCAL) MUSICIAN that he can support kay….and her crack habit.

  27. Yea she bitched about me posting her hotmail addy. I was being funny with it . But hasn’t anyone actually realised she isn’t who or what she says?

It’s pretty obvious shes not what she portrays her (him) whatever self to be. And I have to agree . Noone professional in IT uses “hotmail” ( enter generic html based mail here). Any IT i know knows how to do their own whatever the fuck it is for secure client mail.

Seeing how I belong to musicians supporting musicians and also music Nova Scotia , I can tell you forsure her (his) boyfriend isn’t making any money beside beer tab paid in full after a night playing . And maybe enough to buy her a half gram of shitty blow .

As for being an asshole . Well I work a dangerous testosterone fueled job – so I tend to be kurt with people . And don’t mind kicking workers off my site . My workers included . FA !! I love that post – soooooo true , the dudes got it !!!

  28. PS
I think even the most computer illiterate knows that msn hotmail and whatnot gets hacked spammed and everything else almost weekly . Why would someone use that for business . Even us construction bastards have our company emails on secure log in based servers within our companys.

  29. I was just talking to my buddies Bill Gates and Michael Ratner. Bill was saying that some conspiracy theorist who goes by “kay” thinks he is plotting against her personally.

  30. Bill also mentioned something about this “kay” repeating the old phrase, “Don’t tread on me!”

  31. Nah, she calls her dealers “sheep” for “trying to get a dollar out of her.” You know how kaytard’s swiss-cheese brain works…

  32. hee hee yep Fat . I do know !!! Little does she know shes just one of our sheep. And the dealers keep her in the sheep pen !!! BAaaaaaaaa Baaaaaaaa More blow please Baaaaa baaaa

  33. So kay’s really gay (hey, that rhymed!) because she’s really a he?

Perhaps, Weedhog, you could allude us to ideas on who his gay lover (i.e.: boyfriend i.e.: big time [local] musician) is?

    AND THE PLOT THICKENS! lmao

  34. Jesus between Wheeler and Alert the medic and other mainstream locals , I don’t know who the gay ones are if there are any . Ummm , maybe we can check gus’s pub when I come back in the summer awhile . Easy enough for me to find out whos who in the NS music scene . Plenty other bands I can ask . Hmmmmm Lets just say i think Kay isn’t anything she(he) aludes to .

Maybe shes(he) a frustrated gay dude wanting to be his alter female ego? But since intelligence and wit aren’t he(r) forte – dumb ass sarcasim leads he(r) way . Just a guess here . I only passed carpentry and masonary , failed at phyc.

  35. Somebody should really tell Desi he’s blind, broke and hasn’t really been laid at all during the past decade. What does HE know?

  36. Why tell him Kay? Knowing this industry pretty much inside out – he already knows !!! Oh sorry – unless he’s selling dope on the side , I may have forgot about that one. Hows living in his moms basement treating you ?
