Number one: you won’t become infected with the avian influenza virus by eating cooked chicken. People contract the virus from close interaction with live chickens. The reason why influenzas generally originate in Asia is because many of the farmers live in close contact with their poultry, the chickens will be wandering around the house. Not from large operations where the birds are contained. Number two: it is true that people with healthy immune systems are generally safe from influenza. Influenza generally has a U-shaped death curve, with those under two and over 60 dying. However, viruses that cause pandemics are much more virulent than the viruses that go around every flu season. The virus that caused the last major pandemic killed mainly those from aged 15-40. It is thought that this was because their immune systems were too healthy…the virus was so bad that it illicted too much of a response, similar to that seen with septic shock.

The way to avoid avian flu is to not live near birds and to kill the animals straight out if they look at you.The way to erradicate the virus is to kill the host. If enough are dead the virus starves and then you cure the world…
