At some point in our lives most of us will have to avail ourselves of the services or should I say the right to healthcare. Anybody who has been to the hospital to even visit a relative or friend and had the luck to arrive at meal time we will be able to attest to the questionable quality of their food. Given the choice of helping uncle Roy with clearing his plate I dare say that most of us would decline the offer once we looked under the plastic lid that covers the apocryphal grey matter beneath it. Now if ones’ hospital visit calls for an overnight or more prolonged stay then we will unavoidably be subject to the dubious food that issues from the hospital’s kitchen. As my father was in and out of the hospital over a period of ten years before his final departure, I have had many opportunities to view and sample the debatable culinary delights from their kitchen. These encounters with what lay under the plastic lids on the food trays have caused me to wonder why? The questions being; why are they serving this stuff that is barely recognizable as food and where has the flavour gone?
At some point I recall hearing that the food served to patients in Halifax was coming out of an industrial kitchen in Toronto then shipped to Halifax by air. Say it ain’t so! I have never been able to prove “that” as a fact but due to the limp, flaccid and flavourless quality of the food, it certainly seemed plausible. Why would a place supposedly dedicated to improving the physical condition of societies’ ailing and injured, not place food quality well within one of the top components of improving a patient’s condition?
Questions, regarding food quality, directed to the nursing staff met with shrugs and my questions were redirected to the hospital’s administration for clarification. Further investigation by querying the administration led to reasons pertaining to the bottom line, but surely even bean counters would do better than being served, legumes that were boiled to within an inch of their usefulness as a form of nutrition and comfort.
Being a big proponent of local produce and a weekly supporter of the Farmer’s Market, surely to god there must be an economically viable way of delivering appealing, and nutritious food to our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers that have the unfortunate necessity of spending time in a hospital environment for even one night. Now I know that the healthcare system has many flaws and problems that require attention before the right answers can be found but let’s start with a fundamental by giving our patients a reason to live, and showing them we care. Let’s give them appealing, nutritious and well prepared food. —DB

No, they do not ship the food from Toronto. It’s a rumour. There’s also a rumour they ship it from Montreal too. that’s also false.
If you think the food in general is disgusting, try being given a “special diet” tray of food…I know I sure loved my dry toast (especially when your mouth is super dry anyway from just waking up from being put under) that I couldn’t even manage to swallow, my two tablespoons of something faintly resembling meatloaf, and a teaspoon of tasteless mashed potatoes (completly butterless and without any salt). I didn’t even get any of the token jello everyone else gets — I was actually looking forward to that and you can make sugarfree! 🙁
Hospital food sucks. I agree with this bitch.
heh, heh, the food(?) they give is not the same as the nutrition it gives one. that being the case, it can look and smell disgusting, but has a zillion vitamins ansd other good shit in it for a faster recovery.
that being said, what do you expect it to be, grandma’s home made stew or roast beef? have you been on an airline lately, there stuff is a lot worse than you will find in a hospital anyday.
yeah, i guess you have a right to bitch, with all the money you pay into free healthcare and all that.
“helping uncle Roy with clearing his plate” – What are you, fucking daft?
DO NOT, EVER – “clear off” a patients meal, FUCK!!!!!!!
The staff pays attention/records how much and what, a patient eats & drinks. So you finishing uncle Roy’s tapioca pudding, gives a distorted indication of his progress. “Oh yes Doctor, patient X’s appitite has improved greatly, he’s eating everything now.” ARRRRGGGGH.
The VG water system is colonized by an aerosol transmittable bacteria (won’t get into names). It’s not particularly nasty but for the immunocompromised it does pose some problems. They do very limited preparation of food there for that reason. Also the same reason you can’t take a shower and all the water is bottled.
I quite like airline food LS. Call me crazy but I love it, lol
My grandmother used to give me her jello when she was in palliative care back when I was four, Hugo 🙁
How, exactly, LS, are these people supposed to GET said vitamins if you can’t stand to eat the food? HAHA.
You know my favorite part of being in the hospital? Peeing in a “hat” (and having to leave it there so the nurse can write down how much you’ve peed), though, having someone help you put your underwear on is also something to write home about on a post card.
Let’s face it guys: being in the hospital SUCKS and the food just solidifies said crappiness. Just one more kick in the undignified ass.
I stayed for 3 days after my C-section at the IWK…and I didn’t mind the food at all. But I was on drugs…really excited to meet my bundle of joy…and so excited that my heart burn was gone I may have been a bit disoriented.
I wasn’t a vegetarian, but I used to check that I was. Instead of getting questionable meals which were cooked and sat around for a half hour or so, I got fresh sandwiches, salads and fruit. Now that was before vegetarians were really catered to, so it may be that now tofu and soya burgers are served, in which case, I wouldn’t check that option…soggy soya substitutes for meat…bleh!
PK, sorry, that’s not what I meant at all. I see a big dfference between a dying woman trying to spend a little quality time with her grandchild, and Earl Boffo “not letting all this food go to waste” because post-op Nadine is too sick to hold down a bite.
So I’ll qualify my statement. If you eat/finish a patients meal, let the staff know exactly how much the patient actually ate.
I work at the IWK and we actually have a fairly decent food service program (at least on the postpartum floor, where I work). The patients choose and order their own food from a menu, at any time of their choosing. The staff can also order and I can say that it’s really not too shabby! Not gourmet by any means but not bad at all.
Aw nooo Hugo! I know what you meant, I was just being a little tongue and cheek there (my humour is really quite distasteful sometimes).
I know how important it is to monitor what a patient is eating and drinking. I was told that if I wasn’t outputting as much urine as they’d like me to given the amount of IV fluids I was given I wasn’t going home until my kidneys started working properly. At the time the dilaudid made me not care so much, but thinking back I cringe that I had to pee in a stupid plastic bowl and have the nurse help me put my undies on. And even on the dilaudid I got to a point where, I refused to leave the “hat” full and would just remember what the output was and dump the ‘hat’ because seriously. Having to give a urine sample while having bloodwork done and having to march it out of the bathroom and putting it on a tray out in the open is bad enough….Being in the hospital can be really REALLY dehumanizing (though, the staff does their best to make you feel comfortable — especially at the hospital I was at).
Pk you need to lose alot of weight… thats why they put you on a special diet.
Hello…you’re a dick!!!
hello does not like pk for reasons unknown to us
I think Hello is BFFs with Bon and only comes on here to say random crap about PK. They come around like once every 4 months or so, will make a random comment directed to PK saying the most random crap they can come up with and then disappears for another 3-4 months. I don’t usually pay much attention to their stalker-like behaviour.
See ya in a few months, Hello! 😀
paingirl doesn’t like that
There are all kinds of crazies out there, PG, unfortunately, and most of them hide out on the internet.
Check out Hello’s posting history if you want a good example of what I’m talking about re: the crazies on the net.
Also, btw, Hello: I’m a type one diabetic you fucking idiot. I figured with all the stalking you do and the special interest you’ve seemed to have taken with me, you’d know that.
Crazy as fuck.
How you feelin’ painey? I hope you feel better soon!!
