There is a blog that used the term “cultural vampirism” to describe the nature of the hipster subculture—a group comprised mainly of young people parading around in tight vintage clothing and basking in the ironic exploitation of pop-culture fashion taboos that have made a recent comeback on expensive runways. Not a fan of those people who say “we care” about the environment and don’t drive a car and are walking vessels of expensive Lululemon and ridiculous fedoras and for awful 1950s throwback loafers that scream “Mad Men extra.” I think it’s hilarious that you don’t own a car yet need to spend more money on clothes and weed to sink a ship. In order to preserve the authenticity of their individualism, hipsters deliberately don’t self-identify, taking cover under the guise of being indifferent to the identification of their own subculture, and by feigning oblivion to their hipster membership in the first place. -Chill Pill

The hipsters must be out in full force these days with all the attention they’re getting on LTTWB.
I did see a particular individual with very big glasses last night. Must be heavy on the nose. Poor hipster.
For the love of frig. If you are a man and hipsters inspire anything stronger than mild disdain and amusement, you are straight up jealous of the pussy they are reeling in. There is just no other explanation giver the age groups and other social parameters involved. Chill.
OMG STOP JUST STOP WITH ALL THIS HIPSTER CRAP, ALREADY.
I agree, BS, there are much bigger issues in the world than how someone dresses. The people who judge ‘hipsters’ live in a postage-stamp sized world. And just think! One day you critics will be shuffling around in a nursing home ward, attired in polyester gowns and paper slippers. By then, you won’t even understand the word ‘hipster.
Grow the fuck up. That is all.
“Then, it don’t matter. I’ll be all around in the dark. I’ll be everywhere. Wherever you can look – wherever there’s an art installation, so hungry students can eat and get exposure, I’ll be there. Wherever there’s a cop beatin’ up a mime, I’ll be there. I’ll be in the way indie bands complain when nobody shows up at their gig. I’ll be in the way grad students laugh when they think up a new name for a made up social science that explains their failures, and know they have no intention of ever paying off their student loans. I’ll be in the plaid shirts, and the drum circles and the exhorbitant lofts, I’ll be there too.”

Seems to me that the hipster bitches are half hearted – and the comments as well. I hope nobody really cares that much about hipsters.
They’re delusional and all, but who cares? Just makes the rest of us look better.
During the bus strike, my dad drove my mom, myself and a good friend back and forth to work every day. My friend is very conservative and her parents are quite, uh, well they’re no fun. My parents are all the fun.
So one day, my dad decided he wanted to start dressing like a hipster, despite not having one sweet clue what a hipster is. I told him what he’d have to wear and his response was “yeah, sounds good.”
We haven’t been able to find a pair of womens skinny jeans that fit properly, unfortunately, but he’s been wearing a knitted train conductor hat for the past 10 years, so I think that qualifies him as at least 25% hipster. 25% 68 year old hipster. FFS. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO?
My friend was horrified.
I feel for you and your friend.
Thanks, Jhey. I like to refer to my dad’s style as “retired-chic.”
You know: sweat pants and orthopedic sandals with socks hanging out the front.
He’s pretty stylin’ with the geriatric crowed.
Seriously, fuck hipsters, they’re old news. When is Halifax going steam punk? Then we’ll really have something to laugh at!!!
oh my god shut up you delusional children
Why would you read responses to a hipster bitch if you don’t want to hear (read) people talking about hipsters???
I once saw a hipster.
Not on topic, but does anyone else want to strangle that fake little fucker in the leiderhosen who does the toaster strudels ja ad?
He looks like a failed, gay entrant to the Waffen SS.
Why I think Halifax has so many hipsters:
-large student population
-a LOT of restaurants that employ these students
-a lot of bars and flat out pretentious venues that simply resemble 60s era suburbia
-Some of the most granola, style and identity obsessed girls you can imagine (they exist in flat out self reflective sub-motherhood where they want the man to dress the same way as they would wan’t to dress their son; if some man is already dressed that way it impresses them to the point of arousal).
I’ll mention as a side note how weird I think this is.
-Intellectualism is so important among the hipster crowd that the “your not on the bus” of the 60s is now “you aren’t intelligent enough to impress me”. Because in order to exist with many of these people you have to be a “somebody” which to them requires impressing them…..
This brings me back to the high level of students becoming hipsters in order to at least “qualify” to impress many of these hipsters since if you do impress them and you don’t dress individualistic there is a good chance you might be viewed as a threat by the hipster. This is because the hipster has a lot of identity locked up in how they look.
-Halifax is the perfect size to be seen by enough people, see enough people, and not be too anonymous like Toronto.
-Halifax, despite being smaller, is still well known enough where an identity weary hipster can say “Halifax” when asked where he or she is from, reinforcing part of his or her identity to the person asking.
-Given that Halifax is older there are a lot of large Victorian era houses that bring many rooms to rent for groups of hipsters to live and be pretentious together for relatively cheap. These large apartments aren’t modern enough to have more than one kitchen usually so that sets the stage for the frivolous drama that can play out over who’s better at being Martha Stewart, and which person such and such brought home the night before and was seen getting coffee in the kitchen.
Hipsters also love the old painted wide board hardwood floors that creak, the water radiators and complaining about everything that reinforces who they are by pointing out the way other people “should” be.
-Halifax has a lot of young population coming in to study from all over N.S who many of the hipsters see as fresh meat. Hipsters want to make other people like them as to reinforce the hipsters view of themselves as being special; there is no greater flattery than being copied.
-What bands the hipster has seen is extremely important to the hipster while bragging, and Halifax tends to get both big names and many smaller obscure names that the hipster can both bring up in conversation, and further the encounter by suggesting that they go to the next show as a set up for the hipster to assimilate more people into the group.
– Hipsters love patios where they can be seen, and Halifax has a lot of them
I have noticed that there are a lot of hipsters in Halifax from Cape Breton. Could there be a cultural reason for this?
Capers tend to prey on each other socially a lot (especially the ones from Glace Bay or North Sydney). Extending your identity by how you look could be a way to be “figured out” quickly, making you less of a target. Hipsters tend to be viewed as neutral or diverse in attitude so this is why I think this is.
-The buskers festival means the streets fill up and hipster mini bands flourish at every corner.
More research of the hipster in its natural habitat can shed more light on behavioral patterns and mating rituals.
ONE COOL HIPSTER
“In order to preserve the authenticity of their individualism, hipsters deliberately don’t self-identify, taking cover under the guise of being indifferent to the identification of their own subculture, and by feigning oblivion to their hipster membership in the first place.” Chill Pill
In he same way, Chill Pill preserves the authenticity of his individualism by deliberately not self-identifying, by taking cover under the guise of being indifferent to his own subculture, and by feigning oblivion to his hipster membership in the first place. In other words, Chill Pill is himself one cool hipster.
New Avatar Alert! Thinking about “Thinking About Thinking.”
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
Hipsters suck because in a world in ever deepening crisis, they are obseesed with appearance and coffee. That is why we hate them.
There is no room in the world for preening self indulgent year old children.
Hey now, Hipsters are adorable.
Their self-obsession is an amusing spectacle at the very least. However, what I still can’t figure out is this;
Every generation has their trends. Then they learn more, experience various life situations, move on, become real individuals dealing with their own lives, etc.
With the hipsters, a lot of them seem to be 30 something year old men – the beard army. It seems to span outside of the youth culture. I can’t help but wonder if this is a pre mid-life crisis of sorts.
Life is too fascinating to follow trends. Make your own way. Don’t be a fool, don’t be a hipster tool.
The new hipster is the anti-hipster.
I am hipster.
For some reason, hipster style seems a little grungy to me.
I have news for you, men have beards. Nothing new about that, and like 45% of the population may one day become a man, so it can’t possibly be trendy can it?
what’s wrong with beards? I think most people are talking about the hipster combo.
But we’ve moved on to the superhipster now.
The first time I ever heard of the term hipster was from the song Last Of The Spiddyocks by Digable Planets in the early 90’s.
