Dear people on the highway, when I am approaching the highway from the on-ramp, and you are driving in the right-hand lane and see me approaching, for fuck sakes, have some common courtesy and move over into the passing lane (if no one is there) so that I can get in safely and smoothly! When you fail to do this, and see me giving you the death look, don’t act surprised! It’s what you’re supposed to do! Also, if you’re in the PASSING lane, fucking PASS people! I am so sick of getting stuck behind weaklings in the passing lane who just sit there going LESS than the speed limit and taking 4 days to pass anyone. I’m not in a rush or pushy, but if I want to pass someone who isn’t going the speed limit, I should be able to do this without having to get stuck behind some oblivious asshole in the specified passing lane. If you can’t handle the speed, get the fuck off the highway! —Thaaaanks

Is it the polite thing to do? Yes. Is it what you are SUPPOSED to do? No.
From the Driver’s handbook, chapter two, page 66: “The provincial 100-series highways are designed for more convenient and safer driving. Thses highways are being upgraded as divided multi-lane roadways with restricted or limited access. Controlled access is permitted at specially designed intersections called interchanges.
These areas require the driver’s full attention because one group of drivers is slowing down to exit the controlled-access highway while, at the same time, another group is speeding up to enter the same highway. Use extreme caution in thses zones to ensure a safe and prope manoeuvre for all involved vehicles. Signs will be posted to inform you whether to merge, yield, or stop. IN ALL THESE SITUATION, YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO YIELD TO THROUGH TRAFFIC UNTIL A SAFE GAP CAN BE IDENTIFIED BEFORE YOU ENTER THE HIGHWAY.”
Emphasis mine
It would be nice, OP. Not everyone has common courtesy, actually it’s pretty uncommon. I always switch over if I can do so safely.
Same, if I can I will if I can’t then keep giving me the evil looks because I’m not about to cause an accident to please you
“Yield Sign”.
It’s for YOU.
So you can stuff your dirty looks up your hole, dipschitt.
Amen to that, well, not you Wheelie, you would feel the same way, if you could drive.
It isn’t the person’s job on the highway to let you in. It’s your job to merge. If you don’t have a sense of speed or depth perception, you shouldn’t be driving.
I hope everyone realizes that a safe merge is NOT dependent on the courtesy of other drivers.
Here’s a link if you want to brush up on your merging skills.

Huh? I can drive.
I’m crippled, not *retarded*…
Just kidding about the “tard” crack, Survivor. I know you people are sensitive. You just don’t pay bills on time.
Wheelie owns a car. Wheelie drives a car. Wheelie’s a big boy.
Wow, I think this same bitch has appeared at least three times in a month.
Blow me OB, if you are not going the speed limit when you near the end of the acceleration ramp, you will have to yield to me or hit the dirt. After all, you’re the one who wants into my lane.
oh you sweet smelling sexy gimp, it’s leotarded
Before one submits a bitch one should have to go through a check list of things it can’t be about – on ramps, cyclist vs car, car vs cyclist, and anything else that doesn’t interest me…. : )
I move over when I can because I don’t trust the other idiot.
we had this almost identical bitch a couple weeks ago. nothing has changed sice then, and never will. tough luck, but that is the way it goes, o.p.
THAAAANKS….you sir do not know the rules of the road.
Without knowing them…how did you get a drivers license ?
You have to YEILD.
Period
So why not go back to drivers school, you obviously need it.

That little yield sign you see at the top of your on ramp? Yeah, that means you yield to the driver already on the highway. Not them yielding to you.
Is moving over the polite option? Yes. Is it what you are required by law to do? No.
well that test was frakkin easy.
speaking of easy tests….
oops.
maybe not.
http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Canada/20050512/…
moving is the polite option if we assume that the merging driver is not properly trained to merge.
Otherwise, it is not advisable to needlessly lane change.
sooner or later, any merging driver that gets used to the relying on courteous drivers, will be faced with a very busy road where the courteous drivers will not be able to move out of the way.
Then what will happen?
with their false sense of entitlement, will the merging driver choose to yield? or will he cause an accident? What if he manages to merge after a few stressful moments? Will he blame the other drivers?
GV, I see people racing to the merge all the time, and then forcing their way in. Fucking idiots are multiplying on the roads like cockroaches.
OP, for the on ramp I vote NO to yield to you. I am already on the highway, you are not. Wait your turn. For the slow people in the passing lane, you can only go as fast as the car in front of you. Eventually they’ll move out of you way. Although in Halifax, most people pass on either side….even though passing on the right is illegal.
if there is a slower driver in the left lane, and I’m in the right lane doing less than the speed limit…..
….it’s not called passing on the right.
“I move over when I can because I don’t trust the other idiot.”
This.
not me, I don’t swerve for gophers or idiots, swerving causes accidents.
Wait wait wait here a second… I understand the OP’s post and the comments, but this needs clarification:
If you are a driver on the highway, and you are on the right hand lane approaching a merge lane and you see someone coming, the law says you have to move to the left lane PROVIDED there is no one already there and it is safe to do so. If you are the only person on the highway, you must move over or speed up/slow down to allow the other person in.
HOWEVER if there are multiple cars on the highway and it is not safe for the car already on the highway to move to the left (there’s already a car there), then yes, the car merging in will have to slow down and wait for a break in traffic.
There is a difference between merge and yield, and most highway on-ramps have MERGE lanes, not yield lanes meaning that the driver on the highway is expected to watch for merging vehicles and provide entry.
If you don’t, you’re simply being a douchebag.
“If you are a driver on the highway, and you are on the right hand lane approaching a merge lane and you see someone coming, the law says you have to move to the left lane PROVIDED there is no one already there and it is safe to do so. Wrong. Source it. I was never taught that in YD and have been driving 15 years.
