This 15% tax in Nova Scotia BS is driving me insane. Ever since I moved here in September 2010 I have felt completely taken advantage of by this city with every single thing that I purchase. Why is Nova Scotia’s tax rate so much higher than anywhere else in Canada? Even Starbucks costs more here, which is why I have been cutting back on my daily visits. I wish I would have known this prior to applying at universities in Halifax. I make sure I do not purchase anything here except groceries, as I can easily save money by purchasing it back home in Ontario, or even in the states. I am starting to turn my back on Halifax for this reason. —I Hate the Government

  1. Halifax is a city located within the province of Nova Scotia. The PROVINCE determines what you pay in sales tax NOT the city. So if you’re going to bitch about sales tax and not income tax (which clearly you’re not paying), then complain about the province, not the city, mmmmk?

Also, be glad you’re not in PEI, it’s another half percent more!

  2. Our tax rate is high because we’re fucking dirt poor compared to Ontario. Also, like abc123, the *province* determines the tax rate, not the city. Stupid asshat.

  3. And by income tax I mean property taxes, which are the only taxes determined by the city. Sorry, too early to be internet commenting without coffee.

  4. The good thing about the high tax rate…is all the tax free deals you can get through contractors & others who work on your home, your yard, your car/truck, your firewood…all tax free, yep all you gotta do is ask “if I pay cash will you the sans tax”
& they all say yes, but there’s no receipt.
Like I need a receipt for firewood, or to change my tires from the summer ones to winter ones.
Sure there are many things you have to pay ridiculous taxes on!
But there are lots of things you can get tax free, if you just look around, yesterday I was in Halifax & offered tax free cigarettes, what a deal compared to the stores , unfortunately I don’t smoke & couldn’t enjoy the savings on this one.

  5. Who relocates to a city/planet without checking out the cost of living and taxes? Perhaps this lesson was best instilled in you early before your fat arse waddles back to whence you came.

  6. You can thank that leftie DD for that. Harper lowered the rate so the Disasterous Dick went and raised it.

  7. sounds to me, like you are the same douche, that put in bitch right after this one. fuck you too, don’t like it here, you are welcome to get the fuck away from us.go back where ever the fuck you crawled out from, and let us keep our jobs and money here.

  8. One: Make your own fucking coffee. Bam. One financial problem solved.

Two: Daddy LawBucks is probably paying for your way at university anyway, so your whinging-and-moaning is falling on deaf ears. Maybe you all should have done some basic research before you moved out here, bypassing the wonderful educational opportunities offered by Western.

  9. what a horrible shame you can’t get your daily starbucks!!! what ever will u do????

do what i do, dipshit. make your own.

    jesus fuck sakes!

  10. Ummmm…. starbucks is like what? 10 cents more here?

    FFS.

    You’re already paying $5 for that latte…. what’s 10 more cents?

Buy a tassimo and make your own lattes. My mocha lattes work out to about $1.50.
