Nova Scotia has a public debt of over $13 billion.
Previous governments of the Conservative and Liberal variety have played pork barrel politics since Confederation (that was back in 1867 for the younger folk).
The province has little in the way of viable industry. Long ago the folks who run this province (Conservatives and Liberals) decided that the best way to attract viable industry was to give hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ dollars to private industry in exchange for phantom job creation programs and other such boondoggles.
Voters don’t like to receive bad news, so previous premiers avoided giving them any. What they did give them was more of the same pork barrel – hand out the goodies and let the citizens of tomorrow worry about how to pay for it all.
You have to give Dexter some credit for calling ‘a spade a spade’. He’s had to make some difficult decisions about this province’s finances, some of them unpopular, but only an idiot would suggest that Dexter’s NDP government is somehow responsible for the financial mess this province is in. That mess was created by decades of Conservative and Liberal mismanagement and pork barrel.
The talk among critics and the rabid Right before the last election was all about how an NDP government was going to run the public debt sky high and run this province into the ground financially. Dexter’s government doesn’t seem to be following the critics’ game plan.
Yes, this is all so different from all the other political parties’ honesty and fulfilled promises.
The only major difference between the parties is that the Liberals & Conservatives are politically mature enough to have no illusions that their lies are being believed.
Call “Bullshit” on a Nee-Dipper and watch the range of emotions that cross their face. Confusion, hurt feelings, indignation and barely suppressed glee at the possibility of accusing someone of committing a hate crime by not believing them. Since our money is good for little save buying laughs, make the most of it.
Too bad we couldn’t get some good members of all 3 parties to form a government that actually works for the citizens, and turns this province around. Fires HRM council and CBRM as a first step.

Dex not only had his hand in the cookie jar like his Tory/Grit pals, he made numerous promises he knew he couldn’t keep. He also continued to have his active lawyer fees paid at a tune of a couple of grand a year despite its inactive status and never said a peep about the MLA’s gold plated pensions.
